So, been kind of eyeballing the Switch, but it seems like I have a lot to learn, so here’s some questions:

Initial purchase - other than the system, what else are pretty much essential add-ons I need? As in, best memory card size to get, other controllers, whatever you think is pertinent. Wired vs wireless controllers, etc also good to know.

Smash Bros - I’ve always been intrigued, but only played maybe 3 times on the ooooold ones. So basically, is it too complicated at this point to pick up and enjoy? I’m not looking to win tournaments, just get some longevity and fun out of it.

Also, what are your knockout favorites that are multiplayer? Any great co-op options?

A screen protector is a good investment; you can get some good glass ones online for pretty cheap. I use a basic SanDisk card for additional storage (128 gig, I think), but I haven't had to tap into it so far. I'd recommend a carrying case, too, if you plan to take it on the go a lot. I've heard a lot of good buzz about the pro controller, but I've been perfectly content with the packed-in Joycon connector (I have pretty small hands, though).

I have very little experience with Smash much past Melee, but Nintendo generally tries to make their games accessible across all levels of play. It's not going to be like trying to master Tekken or BlazBlue.

Smash is more of a party game than a proper fighting game. Each character has their own moveset that can be mastered, but in my experience it's always been more about the chaos of random item drops, stage hazards, and since Brawl Final Smashes and Assist Trophies. It's nice in how accessible it is and with a group of friends you can get a lot of mileage out of it.

Memory card size, I'd saw depends on how invested you are with it. It comes with 32gb standard, but I upgraded to 128gb because I plan on the life on the switch. It also only accept micro sdcards.

I think a wireless pro controller from powerA is also a good investment because playing handheld on certain games doesn't feel right.

Lastly for smash, if you enjoyed the previous ones for the fighting and not the side content, then I'd definitely say go for it. While I think it's the best smash ever, I'm aware people don't like the lack of certain mainstay modes like homerun contest and Target smash. World of light is good, but there's more enjoyment if you just want to see how the spirit battles are homaged instead of a full story mode. It has both ups and downs, and it really depends on the player.

I almost got a 128 on amazon, but I have no idea how large save files, eshop games, etc actually are. And I didn’t get much experience with the old Smash versions, but they looked fun.

I figured a protector was easy enough, even though I would probably use the Switch on the tv.

As far as controllers, are the powerA better/on par with the official ones? I noticed some durability complaints on the Pro style. I’m interested in plenty of other games, and those little joy cons look like I would tire of them quickly.

power a is formerly pelican and they are not known for good quality products. I would highly recommend spending a bit more on the official ones or catching them on a deal.

I hate smash so I cant recommend that for you but I have some 40 odd physical games for switch now and Ive had a blast with the console. the portability really opens up when and where you can play high quality games on the go.

Ive used it mostly for single player games though there are some online games but imo not worth the service unless you can find a family group to split a membership with. but that is another issue entirely and i still highly recommend the console.

i'm not entirely sure myself, but if you full download smash bros, undertale, the NES stuff and use physical pokemon eevee and pokken, you still have a bit over 108gbs and according to a quick google search, the current largest downloaded game is NBA 2K19 at 32GBs. Considering how sports games tend to put a LOT of effort into game data stuff and most i've seen range about 1GB to 8GB i think it's plenty of data.
....although that's under the assumption that you'll be getting physical games as well as downloaded ones. might need to go bigger if not the case.

in for fun? then definitely get it.
then they upped the ante since the namechange considering how every online review i've seen rates powerA is equal or better that the official. i think this video would be worth the watch.

it does lack amiibo support and rumble though. i never planned on using those features anyway so that's why i grabbed it.

@Cracka J - I def will get some single player games (if I get it), I’m more interested in co-op in the house, not worried about the online multiplayer.

@marvel b - There we go! Yeah I wish I would have jumped on that $10 card now, even if it would be overkill. I’d def keep physical copies, so 95% of my memory needs would be game saves and maybe some eshop stuff. And the 3p controller seems best, I have never been a fan of rumbling controls, and I hope I NEVER get stuck going down the Amiibo drain!! Tfs are hard enough to afford, and there’s all these $10 badass statues all over the damn place...plus on ebay...plus in sales threads here...LoL. Thankfully I have no idea wtf they are for.

Fun fact - these are listed as “official Nintendo” products, and have a 2 YEAR warranty, vs the what, 30 day for the Pro? Says it doesn’t cover normal wear and tear, but at least you get more than a damn month.

I bought a 128 gb sandisk sd card on amazon got my switch in May. I buy physical copies of games mostly (weird OCD thing).

Having owned xbox 1, ps4 (still) and the switch I would say switch is my favorite. I traded in the x1 towards the switch. I only ever really played titanfall on x1 (which was superb). The ps4 I played lots of Destiny, and its first 2 expansions.

As far as Smash Bros go it is simple to play, deceptively hard to master. My favorite type of game. Expect to be bad. I played from n64 through Wii, skipped the Wii U/3DS version and probably win less than a third of the time :p

Mario Oddyssey is great. Have DBFZ and Xenoverse 2, both hold up on the Switch. If you like strategy XCOM type games mario and the rabbids is good. Mario Kart is great. I still haven't opened my Breath of the Wild game:p

I’ve only ever been good at one game in my entire life - Fight Night (which I will still to this day bet my car vs $20 I will murder any opponent) - LoL. Buuuut I mostly suck at everything else, so maybe I’ll watch some Smash at the local store and see if being terrible will at least be entertaining. I get the “easy to play, hard to master” feel from it. When I played my ex’s kids, I had no clue wtf was going on, but we were all getting our asses kicked and I had no clue what defined a “win” either. But it was insane enough to catch my attention, and I didn’t know if the new one was similar. Most threads or videos all seem like they are for “master” level players, and the gajillion extra shits I see people mention make it seem too complicated to try and invest real time into.

I couldn’t imagine Mario Kart NOT being great, although the Wii one for me didn’t have quite the addictive feel to it the previous ones did. Good game, but I tired of it quicker.

Odyssey - I haven’t even really looked at that one much, but I know I will. I really liked the New Super Mario Bros on 3ds I think it was, just didn’t like the small screen. Def had the fun factor, though.

How is the new Mario Party? I don’t think I’ve played any after the GameCube releases lol

i got one for an early christmas with some family last weekend and have been enjoying the shit out of it. i only wanted it for smash bros, which is great, but my experience with non-video game people is that smash is kind of too complicated or just not fun for them as a party game. everyone is different though, and if you just want it for yourself then definitely go for it. smash bros was my favorite game as a kid so this was a natural choice for me.

mario kart 8 deluxe on the switch is awesome too. fucking legit game. i thought old mario kart was crazy but this shit is ridiculous. it's fun as hell, but it's a ride.

the easy portable -> console hookup is awesome, too. not having to plug in 30 cables to play a game on the tv was great. you just plug in the hdmi and you're good to go. wild.

Let me throw this out there - aside from Fight Night, I actually remember getting pretty good at Soul Calibur II on Gamecube. As in, I could beat the game itself, and was usually pretty competetive against people who were masters of Tekken and those types. Will I at least be able to compete against the single-player stuff in Smash? I just don’t wanna breeze through like 3 challenges and then get stuck getting my head shoved up my own digital ass at only 6% of the game lol

i was never good at any fighting games besides smash bros as a kid. it's definitely different from normal fighting games, so there's something of a learning curve, but it's pretty adaptable. it's fun before anything else, so except for the occasional really tough battle, you should be good for the single player stuff. the "campaign" in this one is a little harder than before because every match is kind of a "wild card" with assorted power ups and junk, but you can just do a random match against computers instead of the campaign to get the feel of the game in general.

I find the single player experience in ultimate harder. But we are talking years ago me being used to brawl on the original Wii. Some of the spirit mode stuff is just straight up dumb in world of light. Stamina matches against dumb characters with amazing assist trophies, or super armor against your certain type of attacks. It is legitimately frustrating where I want to bite my controller (weird habit from when I was a toddler playing mario bros on the nes :p ). However even when I get my ass handed by a clearly superior opponent I have fun because it shows me how much I need to work on. 33 year old me doesnt get mad at losing. Dont know if 20 something me e Joy's this game as much

I really want a Switch, but I've played a little on my friend's. It's a great little console that is extremely adaptable. Also, MarioKart and Smash are awesome.

I enjoy Smash, but the game I love having being portable is Doom

Also having a portable Skyrim is good, you can spend a lot of time on that one.
