It should be noted that many believe that the so-called "high-quality knockoffs" of Mirage and the Dinobots (I'm personally unaware of Reflector, so exclude it for the moment, but it might still apply) are possible because they have the old molds, also explaining why Hasbro/Takara don't.

No. Astrotrain won Round 1. TC and SW are Round 2. Whoever wins Round 2 will face Astrotrain in a "final round" vote.

Too much effort to do otherwise.

The only figures we're going to see are reissues of the popular characters that HasTak still has the molds for. Same as it was for the four previous reissue lines.

Rightly or wrongly, it's been decided that the expense of recreating lost molds isn't worth the likely financial return. Which is why we'll see numerous Perceptor reissues and no Grimlock.

That's terrible reasoning. Unless you're suggesting they just reissue a bunch of MP figures it's not like them not making these'll give them more resources to design new molds. In fact it'd be the opposite; any assets they reuse make them more money to funnel into new molds. It's the same way that repaints get them more value out of a mold.

Wasn't Devastator a recreated lost mold though? Obviously as Hasbro's reissued him after the fact but presumably TakaraTomy did revive the mold and even used it twice in for the Encore era so it seems like it can pay off quite well. Especially knowing how popular the Dinobots are it seems like it'd be a worthwhile endeavor for them.

I can definitely see them recreating the Dinobot molds or the Wheeljack mold, because they're popular characters, and would probably sell like hotcakes.

Bumblebee's face change and Starscream's modified fist to hold gun Megatron all came from Takara reissues. Those molds were already produced years ago. It's nice that Hasbro decided to use those new tooled molds instead of going straight "hardcore" vintage style since those hadn't seen U.S. distribution before. But let's be honest...there really wasn't much effort put in there.

I've been speculating that for years now.

I wonder if there will be reissues in 2019 too. Just not right to have a gap between 2018 and 2020.

As has been said numerous times, don't judge everything by what you see locally. Traveling between MI, OH, KY, TN the past few months, Hot Rod is the only one I've seen consistently at stores.
Devastator and then Starscream didn't last long at all. At least, not at the 15-20 Walmarts I frequent in those 4 states, as well as other reports and the online stock also suggest.

Again, not true. Hasbro CAN release Megatron in his G1 colors, but he would have to have - at minimum - the orange plug affixed to the end of the barrel.

There ARE a couple localities that have more stringent requirements (NYC I believe requires the odd-ball colors) which, along with possible public outcry, is likely the reason Hasbro has stayed away from going down that road.

True for US law but state laws can and have added on to that so "Orange Tip" Megatron would be fine in Oklahoma and Texas, he would violate New York and California laws.

My guess is that there will be reissues along with the winner. And Spring 2020 could end up actually looking more like Winter 2019, if past experience can be used.

I think thundercracker and skywarp were a bit of a waste of good spots for votes. Since we already got Starscream, we are basicalĺy voting for the same figure.
