If this movie didn't have any G1 design, would the critics still like it?

 

I dont think even General Audiences would like it, I mean look at this thing

 

A lot of what made Bumblebee as intimate as the film shows is because of his redesign. For example, it would have been impossible for Charlie to hug Bee if he'd have his old design. His large eyes helps boost his expressiveness with the lack of voice. He looks much cuter overall too.

As for the designs on Cybertron, it would have been no different than the opening scene in DOTM: bunch of gray blobs shooting other gray blobs with gray ships flying over them. So no, I don't think the movie would have received that much of a positive reception if they stuck to the old designs.

 

If that was the case, i would be much more likely to watch it. Right now I’m leaning towards not watching.

 

The movie has a smaller budget, the new art style goes for simpler animation models that fit that budget. I don't think a Bumblebee with TLK-style models would even be capable of existing.

 

Yeah...that can join live-action Sonic in the list of cursed images.

 

Holy mother...that's just bayverse's bee with VW parts slapped on. Looks horrible.

 

Nope. I can't lie. I hate his new design. In my mind Bumblebee is an aggressive warrior and this new designs lacks all that. I just wish for future movies they bring back some of his bayverse features that made him so bad ass. Get rid of those simple, rounded shapes. And his haead makes him look like a child.

The emergence of Baywunners with the BB movie is just irony gold. It's basically a trip down the memory lane to the first Bay movie but in reverse.

 

Shatter and Dropkick at most though. Not so much with BB.

 

Why should the heroes be the ones with aggressive design features? I love TF07 and DOTM, and I like AOE and ROTF, and while I usually find the "you can't tell who's who" argument a bit over exaggerated, in busy fight scenes it can be difficult telling deceptions from lesser featured autobots because they all have super aggressive design styles. I think if friendlies look friendly it'd be easier to know who's on what side. You could say then that "if you make them look less aggressive they won't be as badass!" but the Optimus Prime's design in the bumblebee movie is both less aggressive and still kicks ass! He looks like someone stoic you can believe in but can also kick your tailpipe if you're on his bad side. I think you can still have cool robo warrior designs without all of them being jagged and dangerous looking.

But hey, that's my opinion. Yours is equally valid.  

 

That's right, out of context in this image you can't really tell if he's a good or bad guy, of course he looks tough, but also kinda scary. You can take this face (again out of context) and put it on a Sci-Fi Horror film and will work, again, bee's face could be kinda creepy at sometimes. Im all for agressive designs, it's just that for this movie's sake it's better with what they stuck with.

Maybe it's the eyes, and the overall round facial features that really make a contrast, but I think they can pull it off, maybe like what TFP did.
