I'm still shocked the 07 movie didn't win this

 

There are some strange contenders on here for example Ready Player One and Black Panther where the CGI wasn't all that great. It looks like they just throwing everyone on here with an ounce of visual effects.

I'd personally vote for Isle of Dogs.

 

Ready Player One's cgi wasnt supposed to be great since they were in a video game ,just nice to look at

 

Honestly this movie doesn't deserve it, which is shocking. I never thought the cgi for transformations could rival the terribleness of transformium but after seeing the trailers and how bee and blitzing cheat their transformations right in your face it's awful. Bees entire front of the car just sucks into a black hole on his chest, and blitzwings cockpit just clips right into itself until its gone.

 

Incredibles 2, huh? The cartoon? The entirely 100% animated cartoon? Okay.

Anyway, yeah, this category will play out as it usually does. It won't really do anything for the standard FX fodder - it'll be about the movies where it looks like an advancement in VFX. Aquaman might actually get some acknowledgement here because of the whole underwater thing, Christopher Robin could get some attention because of the whole 'bringing Pooh n' Friends to life' angle, but Welcome to Marwen will definitely get most attention, if not completely sweep.

These aren't the finalists, people.

 

“Ant-Man and the Wasp” - Great application of visual effects, while no technique used is relatively new. The implementation and usage of it to convey what it needs to is quite original. Shows wide ingenuity with how it's implemented and used.

“Aquaman” - The underwater atmosphere is the strong selling point here, but not sure if it's really enough for an oscar. Depends on other contenders.

“Avengers: Infinity War” - Very effects heavy, but not much relatively new on implementation. Nothing truly effects groundbreaking, but is very finely refined effects.

“Black Panther” - Nothing fully groundbreaking again, but the effects to really sell Wakanda as what it is are marvelous, nothing truly groundbreaking really though.

“Bumblebee” - The implementation and ingenuity of the effects here really stand out. From the house scene and his mid transformations with passengers, the effects here really sell the concept in unique ways.

“Christopher Robin” - Maybe, carries more on nostalgia, but how it makes Pooh's world come alive and feel real is a strong selling point.

“Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” - Effects on par to Nutcracker or Jurassic World, but Jurassic world still feels slightly more real.

“First Man” - Not much really new here, but does sell what it's trying to do with what it uses. But nothing truly original here.

“Incredibles 2” - Animated, so an obvious no.

“Isle of Dogs” - Animated, so obvious no, though is amazingly well animated and has interesting intricacies to the craft in that regard.

“Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” - Does make the dinosaurs feel real and authentic, but nothing really truly stands out from past iterations of the franchise or in how it advances effects techniques. Close one, but will have to lean on not likely a winner, but is a strong contender. Has some interesting effects implementations and techniques to better sell the effects, but much of that is rather natural technique evolutions and nothing truly ground breaking. More on the "why didn't areas think of that sooner" kind of obvious on implementation. The sound department though should definitely get a nomination. Every subtle sound in the film is what really sells the concept the most here.

“Mary Poppins Returns” - Unknown. But possible. Depends on how well it advances the technique usage and how various things are implemented. But really couldn't say. By comparison doesn't rank high as others though, because the effects are fairly standard. Would all depend on how they are implemented and the ingenuity factor.

“Mission: Impossible – Fallout” - Standard action movie fair, nothing original effects-wise.

“Mortal Engines” - Potential and interesting implementations, but not sure if the full polish is there. From the bit I've seen in the trailers, it needs a bit more polish though is very wondrous in how it made these mobile cities come alive. But as effects go, doesn't really advance techniques or present anything new that hasn't already been done.

“The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” - Same as Fantastic Beast, effects are good, the world it sets is neat, but nothing it presents is quite "new" in technique usage or effects. It's about on par to the Alice movies, or similar.

“Paddington 2” - Possible. But nothing full stands out as not having been done elsewhere.

“A Quiet Place” - Good effects, and interesting technique implementation, but it's more subdued due to the nature of the film itself. Not enough of it to really warrant a win. Though does come across as authentic and genuine with how well crafted the effects are. Feels more real than even Jurassic World does.

“Ready Player One” - No. The effects implementation is interesting, but the heaviest side of it is blatantly supposed to be surreal. So it'd be akin to voting on an animated feature.

“Solo: A Star Wars Story” - Very polished effects, and much of them, but most of which is standard fare, though seems to be above Mortal Engines in authenticity factor. That train scene in particular stands out, but nothing technique-wise and implementation-wise really stands out as saying fully unique, though out of Star Wars films is leaps and bounds above the effects of the prequels and on par to the new films. Strong contender, but not sure if it's enough for a win. How it makes everything feel real is the selling point. I'd rank it above Jurassic World and Star Wars: TFA on effects for authenticity. But not sure about how it truly advances technique usage and is more from polish from money thrown at it.

“Welcome to Marwen” - Definite strong contender. While the effects themselves are nothing ground breaking, much like Ant-Man and Wasp, it's the implementation of them and how they use it to convey the emotional nature of the story that really sells it that makes it stand out.

 

My votes are for Infinity War, a Quiet Place and Black Panther.

I wouldn't be surprised if Poppins receives the award.

On a sidenote, TLK had the best cgi effects I've ever seen.

Yeah I hate awards shows. I hope bumblebee can win though. I mean I love all the VFX in the movies except for TLK. These ones in bumblebee are damn impressive. Looks very real for the case of bumblebee and detailed in the cybertron scene. Infinity war is probably gonna win. And rightfully so. The effects are very impressive. Black panther was mostly good but it really fell low in the later scenes. Didn’t see Fantastic beasts but from what I saw the effects looked incredible. Haven’t seen a lot of the other ones cause they looked boring as shit.

 

TLK is a turd. A beautiful one.

 

im shocked transformers and comic book movies are on list ten years ago they where always passed up and not to be taken seriously with big award shows oscars and golden globes i be surprised if one of comic book movies and transfromers get award but im not counting on it these shows are always rigged its always boring movies that win

 

Yeah. It’s very surprising. But honestly it could go anywhere. Most likely the films nobody cares about. Or at least not the films that a lot of people liked.

 

Transformers was snubbed way back when. ILM had to invent so much new stuff for the film. I'd say Christopher Robin here because of how accurate the characters look to real stuffed animals and how they interact with the real world.
