I'm working through a watch-through of all the Toho Godzilla movies, and Final Wars is by far the worst so far (though I've got some real clunkers in the Showa Era yet to come).

I'm actually not sure how I'm going to do the Showa Era. I went right to Three Headed Monster because I had a hankering to watch that one again, but I might just skip to some of the later ones I haven't seen yet, like Hedorah and Megalon. Like, am I really missing something if I skip All Monsters Attack?

A bell curve so far actually. The rubber suits in old ones obviously look super cheese (I like 3HM and Mothra Vs for the story more than the visuals), and the CGI is super dated in the new ones (as you probably could tell in Final Wars). The late Heisei and early Millennium movies age the best in terms of effects and "believability." GxM and Tokyo SOS are consequently my favorite movies, because they don't try to blend too much cgi in. Tokyo SOS also has my favorite Mothra summoning.

I've gotta disagree there as Mothra vs Godzilla has hands down the best visuals of the entire franchise.

The late Heisei films are a joke with its effects as they are so shoddily done and the Godzilla suit is falling apart in SpaceG during the first half (well, Godzilla's tail tip flies off during his battle with SpaceG) while some of the lights on Burning Godzilla stop working halfway through the film.

Now I do agree that the two Kiryu films are top notch. :)

Fuck anime space noodle, THAT'S a Ghidorah if I've ever seen one right there: a regal, magnificent, yet utterly terrifying and demonic three-headed living apocalypse. Rodan just might replace '56 as my favorite design for him, and Mothra, whilst being the most radical, reminds me a lot of Leo and still manages to look utterly gorgeous, while still looking as though she can put in some serious work.

And Godzilla is still a fucking beefcake, albeit with a pedicure and superior dorsal fins compared to his '14 self.

Oh wow, is that top pic involving Godzilla fighting Ghidorah underwater? That might prove advantageous to the Big G if he can get the three-head try-hard down into his preferred turf.

I really gotta say how I love the mix of elements in these designs, both maintaining iconic traits whilst updating their features. Ghidorah's wings are much more draconic and 'realistic', but they retain the lower set of struts that distinguished the original's wings. Rodan is less upright but keeps the wing-hands and connective wing membrane. Mothra is the most distinct of the changes, kind of like Hokmuto with her lengthened legs, but maintains that elegance and patterning. It really is phenomenal how well they've designed these kaiju.

    WOW!!! :jawdropper:

Awesome doesn't even begin to describe King Ghidorah!

As short as his legs are, I can only imagine terrified people on the ground seeing nothing but his 3 heads & necks, massive wings, and twin tails as he flies.

Ghidorah's legs make me think that - like some birds - he spends the majority of his life in the air. They're thinner than even his necks. So standing upright might the kind of challenge that would give him that signature King G Wiggle he does with his necks.

That also means that standing up straight won't be a favorable position for any toy...

I'm not going to listen to the theme, I want it to be a surprise when I see the movie.

HOWEVER! These monster designs are glorious. Befitting of Gods--oh, I mean, Titans.
