So I just looked it up... Did not know Netflix put out six new episodes... kind of a short season... but now I want to watch it...
Just watched Mac and Me... I remember seeing trailers for the movie and now I'm glad I never saw it... till now... The movie is truly terrible. Also their jokes kinda crossed a line a couple times... I liked the one where they joked about making the wheelchair fly cause that felt more like a joke on E.T. than a joke about him being in a wheelchair. The line about "Oh I thought those were catheters" when they're clearly straws, we literally just saw a close up of him putting one in a can of coke. There were a few like that where they just seemed to be making fun of the kid for having a disability. Most of them were OK, I mean just acknowledging that he's in a wheelchair isn't inherently bad but assuming that he has other medical issues as well and making the joke about the disability is not OK. Anyway... there was really only two jokes out of like 10 that mention the wheelchair that I thought went over the line. Only time I've ever felt uncomfortable watching this show... well the only time that it was caused by the riffs rather than the movie itself... This is a terrible movie and this show is suppose to make terrible movies actually tolerable to watch not make them worse. Speaking of making a movie actually tolerable to watch... they need to watch the Room... That shall be their punishment for the wheelchair jokes.
I still have two movies to finish off the season but it feels like they have a better grasp of things this season than last season. Things are just working better this season and the rapid fire rifting works for films so bad you don't care what the movie characters are saying. Sure it's a shorter season but "the gauntlet" is actually a pretty cool gimmick given the steaming format and how fans can be.
I have issues with Atlantic Rim. It's from the same company that gave us the Sharknado series. Like Sharknado, it's self aware and intentionally bad. IMHO it would be fine for Rifftrax, but not MST3K. And I would like to add if this movie took human form, It would be so hard for me to not want to punch it in the face.
This isn't even the first time that MST3K has made fun of a movie that was self aware and intentionally bad. I'm pretty sure most of them are. More specifically though Space Mutiny... Reb Brown (Dave Ryder) and Cisse Cameron (Lea Jansen) are friends of mine, trust me, they knew it was a terrible movie.
Operation: Double 007 (AKA O.K. Connery) and a few others were made with tongue firmly in cheek too. The end result still works.
Watching Atlantic Rim and noticed an error from the mst3k side. During the Mardi Gras scene when servo floats, for a second you can see a puppeteer become visible in the center of the screen.
Wait... there are actual puppetteers still in use during the movie segments? I thought the shadows of them watching the movie were all animated and only the close ups on the space station sets were live puppets.
All i know is Tom is floating around and i see off to the left a semi transparent human shape in the middle of the screen. I think it was a guy in one of those green suits matching a green screen and it didn't work for a second and he became semi visible. It appeared almost grey and staticy. Again it was only for 1-2 seconds. Wow the movies this season are unwatchable. Mac and Me is terrible, Atlantic Rim and Lords of the Deep were mind numbingly bad.
Nevermind. I think it was a person's shadow on the actual film. I paused it and caught it. But from the angle and the moment it does look like a puppeteer. I think Gypsy is the only animated one. Tom, Crow and Jonah are real.
I have never watched Mac & Me and I have to say that the McDonalds dance party scene is one of the greatest thing in cinematic history.
They should have used the Japanese version of Mac & Me, where you actually see the kid get shot. It infinitely improves the movie:
There's also a part where they said More Than Meets the Eye. Anyway... the riffs were better in this one but the movie was so much worse. There's a part where they said "Wait I'm confused I thought this was suppose a movie about giant robots fighting monsters" and just before he said that I was thinking this movie is over half way over and I've only seen the robots once... why are they just sitting around talking while there's a monster rampaging through the city? DO SOMETHING! Thought they could of used more Power Ranger jokes. I mean they had multicolored costumes with Diamonds on them, giant piloted robots, you never see them enter or exit their robots, they fight monsters, they're freaking Power Rangers. And strangely the actual Power Rangers that saves on their budget by using Japanese stock footage looks like it has a bigger budget than this movie. At least Power Rangers can show the robot vs monster fight for longer than five seconds at a time and doesn't constantly cut away to people reacting to things we can't see. They did mention Power Rangers once but they should of just kept making fun of it.
Exclusive: MST3K returns for social-distancing Riff-Along special The Mystery Science Theater 3000 Live Riff-Along will air on May 3 at 6 p.m.
Ugh, every rona special so far has sucked hard. I don't need celebs to continually tell me to social distance and blah blah blah. Their pampered bravery is more mockery.
