This pointless poll is actually giving some interesting views on the matter.

For the first time, I see why I'm not into Hot Toys, statues and so on. They are too "serious" and "adult" for me. And they are often homage and representation of "other things" like movies, comics, games etc.

They're nice but not for me. I only enjoy the actual thing (the movie, the comics etc) they pay homage to.

But TF, and 3P too, are different. They are updated, grown up versions of the toys back in the day. They were born like toys. And for me they still are toys. I'm too old to play in the old fashioned way, they're more puzzle to mess with... But they're not just an homage, or a representation of a toon character: they're transforming toys first and foremost.
So I'm happy as an adult and as a child LOL

 

I'd say yes, but I'm not sure of the resale value. Plus you'd have to prove it's truly MISB.

12 inch Rocketeer figure says it's an adult collectible along with that movie NECA repo of RoboCop says collectible and that child sized TMNT Donatello.

But my Iron Factory figures tell me toys, and my Magic Square and Hot Soldiers say toys.  

 

I'd say they are a little bit of both. So you have to ask this question as well. How many parents would buy there kid a $200 plus dollar figure. So to me they are for adults cause only adults can afford them. Unless the kid is rich or has a really awesome set of parents that gives that kind of money out. Didn't get a chance to vote since i missed it but that's what I'd vote to say.

Our fandom has a bad habit of trying to dress up our hobbies to make it seem less objectionable. That they are ashamed of what they do, because toys are inherently something for kids and to collect them as an adult implies some kind of stunted emotional/psychological development. So we highlight and focus on and are drawn to the little things that make toy collecting less "kiddy" instead of finding legitimately adult hobbies.

We are toy collectors and no amount of die cast, premium paint jobs, stands, etc... will change that. Putting them in a glass detolf instead of a 50$ bookshelf will not change that. You arent more of an adult if your collection is all Fanstoys MPs instead of Hastak "Generations". But you will see a great deal of pretentiousness from those "adult" collectors on what is or isnt "good enough" to collect. At the end of the day a person buying some cheap figure off the racks at Target and posing it on top of their dresser is as much of an "adult collector" as the person that bought FlameToys Drift and put it into the detolf in their collection room.

You get the idea. It's ridiculous. Accept who/what you are and move on....or just ditch the hobby and grow up because you dont REALLY enjoy it anymore.

 

This thread turned into a joke for real. Some guy tried to troll me and ended up finding out the fandom is pretty divided. Everyone knows where I stand. Ive heard all the arguements from people who live and die by the sword known as "literal" when it comes to how they interpret words. Ive heard all the geek calls about being in denial of your hobby. While I can respect your perspective I just flat out cant agree. I believe a word can have multiple meanings based on intention. You could argue that a collection of assault rifles are "toys" if your intention is to "play" with them. And you can also argue that a collection of expensive cartoon replicas are "adult collectibles" if your intention is to display them on a shelf purely for visual enjoyment. You might do the same thing with glass figurines, but you probably wouldnt call them "toys". But if you took those same glass figurines and had a battle with them vs. GI Joes, they might as well be toys. Its all about intention. Also I dont know why this guy put "it is an action figure, it is not a doll" on the vote choices. This thread is not about GI Joe figures that are scaled to match Barbie dolls. That choice wasted so many votes that could have swung the final vote tally in either direction...what a joke.

 

And in the end, you're still wrong.

 

Do you pose the figures on your shelf? If you do, that action is playing --------- I have figures I transformed once, put on a shelf, and barely touched again. I have some I havent even transformed. But I will redo my displays from time to time. Adjust a pose. Change which weapon is held. At the end of the day, that is still playing. I'm manipulating a toy. If you're doing the whole "it's the intent to display" argument, then the only true adults in the fandom are the MISB guys.

Let's look at the arguments for these being "adult collectibles" and if they hold up in a more general sense.

If I were to display a See-n-say on a shelf, would you argue it's become an adult collectible? Im an adult putting it on a shelf! The intention is display! What if a company made a metal one for adults nostalgic for their childhood see-n-say? Would the metal and audience make it less of a toy? No parent would buy their kid a metal see-n-say. It might be heavy and have sharp edges. What if it had a limited release at some kind of convention? A shiny paint job and a $300 price tag? No parent would pay $300 for a special edition see-n-say. Only an adult with loads of discretionary income to blow would buy that. Does the cost make it adult...or is it still a fucking see-n-say...a toy regardless of how you try to dress up that fact?

 

Are people really trying to say they aren't toys? LOL.

You collect high end expensive toys made for 15+ year olds.

It only sounds worse when you try to deny it.

 

The irony is how the most insecure are the ones projecting their own insecurity onto everyone else.   In this thread we see the insecurity of some adults that play with collectibles like toys expanding the definition of "play" and "toys" to encompass all collectors. No thanks, we won't accept your misappropriated terminology.

Just be yourself and focus on yourself. If you don't like yourself, you're the only one who can change that. The rest of us will enjoy collecting what we like and using it however we like and won't feel the need to justify it to others. The more you scream about "toys" and "play" and try to force your terms on the rest of us, the more you look like children yourselves and the less relevant you are to the discussion as a result.
