I can see them wanting Leo, as he often (intentionally or otherwise) does kind of a younger Nicholson impression in his acting, so there might even be a weird kind of callback feeling to him doing the role.

Personally, I'm hoping Scorsese doesn't do this movie. At his age, he's only got time to work on so many more movies, and I'd hate to see him waste his limited time on this.

Except he's said that he's been interested in superhero/comic roles several times (it's like people forget he was in the running for Tobey's spot as Spiderman) and said he isn't ruling out playing a comic book character; he just "didn't feel ready yet". He also said that superhero roles are becoming more complex and that that excites him. I mean, if this is being backed by Scorsese, I don't see why Leo wouldn't at least humor DC and go into negotiations about the role.

Fair enough, but still, just as many reasons for the guy not to want to get involved in a multi-year franchise agreement.

Though the the Tobey spiderman thing is a humorous point. That was what? 15 years ago when he was still just and up and coming star? Doesn't mean much today when he has far eclipsed TM despite playing the exact type of long standing character like the joker.

Really I think it would come down to MS actually directing the movie. Leo loves working with him, and absolutely trusts him, producing wouldn't be enough imo. Not to mention the shit storm that dc movies have been lately, I think it would be more than enough to make him very weary of taking the role unless it was a huge paycheck and some major backend options on the table.

I dont know why, but I think that's a great casting choice. He's eccentric enough to possible pull of a great version of the character.

Kinda surprised Joaquin Phoenix never appeared in much movies nowadays, but it would be a nice fit.

A Little off topic, but my favorite movie starring Phoenix was Ray Elwood in Buffalo Soldiers.

Huh, now THAT is an interesting casting choice. Sort of another out-of-nowhere name akin to Heath Ledger. And Phoenix is talented enough that he could literally sit in a chair, smile and say nothing for 2 hours and it would still absolutely decimate anything that 30 Seconds to Leto idiot could/would ever do.

Yeah, he's certainly a better choice than Leto...

I hope it does okay and leads to WB doing more conservatively-budgeted mid-size movies that don't need to be interconnected and don't need to make a bazillion dollars to not be considered a flop.

That said, I am tired to death of the Joker and won't be watching this.

“I take a lot of time and consideration when making decisions and what I’m gonna work on always. So, in some ways, the process, which is obviously reading a script and meeting a filmmaker and then continuing to have meetings and discussions with Todd [Phillips]. I think he’s very impressive and he seems to have a very interesting understanding of this world and what he’s trying to say. And so there is something very appealing about that and working with him on this particular project. It feels unique, it is its own world in some ways, and maybe, mostly, it scares the [frick]ing shit out of me or something. It might as well be the thing that scares you the most.”

"I think, underneath the excitement of these films, and the size of them, there are these incredible characters that are dealing with real life struggles. And sometimes that is uncovered and exposed, and sometimes it isn’t, and so I always felt, like, there were characters in comics that were really interesting and deserve the opportunity to be kind of studied. And so I think that’s what Todd sees appealing about this idea."

We'll see. Suicide Squad proved that a villains film can be interesting.

Ehhh... Suicide Squad did indeed prove a lot of things, but that wasn't one of them. ;)

Anyway, I have no idea where this will land in way of DC, DCEU, blah blah blah, but I hope it turns out well. Phoenix on a bad day could blink and out-act that ridiculous 30 Seconds to Leto joke, so he's already ahead in the regard by light years.

When did people start taking this shit so fucking seriously?

The more and more people try and force the Joker to be "scary" the more it comes off as silly. Ledger was kind of a fluke, and yet he was equally funny as well as disturbing. Which Leto's worthless attempt didn't accomplish at all.

    Ledger raised the bar.
The guy who portrayed Joker in Gotham TV series is promising.
I'm feeling Phoenix will pull both inspiration from Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger's portrayal.

As for Leto's no disrespect to him but I find his version somehow weird.
I prefer a Joker who's in the same or near the age of Ben Affleck.
If Phoenix nailed this one, then I'll prefer him in the same universe for Batfleck.
But too bad.. Leto is in Batfleck's universe. But they could pull off that Leto's Joker is just a brainwashed Robin.

    WUTTTT?
    I didn't know that :(

At second thought, I think Leto can pull off a George Michael in a biography film.
He's a singer and did a transgender in Dallas Buyers Club.
