    Cutie Honey Universe
Jesus this anime. Where do I start?

    oh

    how about the theme song

It's not great. It's not replace-the-national-treasure good so it's weird that Universe is so in love with it that it uses it as an insert song several times. It's weird that Universe turns its back on a lot of Honey's conventions, like leaving out her big speech after transforming that she always does, before going back to them later. But never using the theme song. Not even in the final episode.
It's weird that the show is incredibly dated in terms of look, content, and complexity and it still tries to modernize itself in the most strange ways. It's fanservice would be shocking back then but it's so tame now. There's no excuse for the constant tonal whiplashes the show never overcomes or the fact that it isn't funny or that there aren't any good action sequences or that it is incredibly poorly written both on its own merits and as an adaptation.

On its own merits, it has a cheesy and fun first half with campy monster-of-the-week hijinks before it has a midpoint shift. Then the rest is no fun allowed until it's dumb, nonsensical, and unearned finale.

In the penultimate episode a bunch of monsters combine into one big monster with a machine gun arm and Honey goes to fight it with a sword while riding a dragon. This is the kind of goofy shit I like to see, it made my 8 year old heart excited before my cynical adult brain kicked in and whispered "There is no way they will deliver on this. In the next episode this fight won't happen."
It doesn't happen. The dragon is taken out immediately and there isn't even a real fight with the antagonists. The side characters save the day with "friendship" when they didn't do anything to warrant it. All this while they play their bland new theme song for half the episode.

Just.... don't. Not even as a Honey fan. Value your time. The theme song is a sin.

    Hinamatsuri

Pretty good as far as slice of lifes go. There's a nice mix of wholesome family material, goofy hijinks with a supernatural twist, and strong, strong deadpan humor to keep it all together. Not all the jokes land, some episodes have a lot of dead air, and some character material gets repetitive but enjoyable overall.

    Fumikiri Jikan

3 minute shorts about people doing things at a train crossing. Pretty hit or miss, but the hits are really entertaining and misses amount to 3 minutes of wasted time an episode you don't like which isn't that bad. It's inoffensive enough that I can't imagine anyone being mad over their lost 3 minutes and I'll definitely remember the anime fondly for the sibling characters, if nothing else.

Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online

When a SAO anime is my favorite anime of the season. What wild times we live in.

Above average animation, good presentation and pacing, expressive character designs, gun porn, solid narrative structure, varied action sequences with interesting scenarios that serve the story, actually being funny as hell. The morbid loli humor where a bunch of little girls ruthlessly slaughter people by the dozens really tickles my funny bone. The fights are really exciting and there are genuinely hype moments throughout the show (wew that cliffhanger, you know the one). I never finished the original Sword Art Online and had an utter blast with GGO. Good opening and ending too. It's fun and it's standalone.

Season ranking: GGO > Fumikiri Jikan > Hinamatsuri > Cutie Honey Universe
Pretty bad season when I only finish 4 anime huh

That was when the show got better for me. What didn't you like about it?
The first half is about Llenn finding her feet in the game and the second half has her go against her former mentor and friend. Pito finally gets to go ham and is the funniest character in the show and Llenn's friend also finally gets to play. The second half is also when they start playing up the morbid humor and I really liked the story's conclusion.

To me the second half was just when the anime stepped up. More action, more humor, Llenn gets angry more often and hearing her voice crack when she screams is funny, that cool person who blackmailed a kiss out of Llenn lol, everything about Pito cracks me up, especially her and M's motivations. Rather than seeing the second game as unnecessary, I saw the first game as set up FOR the second game because Llenn needed to develop a relationship with Pito and M before having to go against them on her own.

Ponyo - The first time I watched this I absolutely despised it. Now watching it again, it's really not all that bad. It's still easily Miyazaki's weakest film, but it's pretty sweet and is effective in the narrative it is going for. I do feel like the lack of an actual villain, or some sort of antagonist, hinders the film, but for what it is, it's cool. Also, while I know it isn't in every film of his, I always find it odd when there isn't an airship of sorts flying around since that seems to be something Miyazaki loves. Anyway, I give the film a nice 8/10.

Yeah, I more or less feel similar.
I actually didn't like it after the first few episodes, I felt like it wasn't sure what kind of tone it really wanted to set, cause you had like this zany tone with sexual innuendos, and then it gets all mellow dramatic with the character stories. Eventually it seemed to find it's bearings and put out some pretty good story telling, the stand out episodes for me were the one where Zorome met the adult in the city, and the episode with the flashback to when Hero and Zero two first actually met...The series really seemed to fall apart when the real enemies are revealed, at which point it almost feels like the show was getting canceled, so they had to cram in what could have been another whole season of story arc into the final few episodes.

I really didn't mind the tone changes too much, but I totally see where you're coming from. I'm 100% with you on the true enemy reveal, I literally did a double take at my TV screen. I read rumors that Trigger wanted to do a 27 episode series that started in the Fall but A1 said no, and we got a 24 in Spring. Apparently Trigger also left production after episode 14. Just rumors, but it would make sense considering what we ended up with.

In a word, Pito, to me they shot themselves in the foot with that idiotic death plot. If you removed that bit about Pito dying in real life if Llenn wasn't the one to kill her, then I would have enjoyed the second half just as much as the first. Pito is an absolute beast, there was no reason to dumb things down with a death plot like you'd expect in SAO. Pito's smart she could have easily found a way to goad Llenn into participating in the second Squad Jam.

Bottom line the second half made me hate Pito so damn much. To be quite honest if it weren't for Llenn, her gamer friend, and the Amazons I would have just said fuck it and stopped watching as soon as they revealed the plot for the second part of the season.

Honestly I kinda get it. I sorta took it as a very, very weird and crazy form of survivor's guilt. They're pretty clearly not right in the head, and the fact she'd put all that on the line didn't really put me off of it. We needed some amount of stakes. At that point it's just watching some characters play video games, and when SAO did that (Excalibur) it was pretty awful even by SAO standards.

Calamity of a Zombie Girl.........oh lord this one was a big hot mess. Never have I ever rooted for the zombies to win so much. Actually can you even really call them zombies they didn't even eat anyone. Oh God the more I think of it the more I find wrong with this movie.

On a brighter note up to the last 3 episodes of Cromartie High. The show makes no sense sometimes but it's just fun to watch. Well except maybe that one dude who's very into comedy those are only okay bits.

Well finally got to watch the episode of Darling and the Franxx.

It sure was something. I don't hate the series it did have some entertaining moments. Really breaking it down it's kind of a metaphor for adulthood. There's no real manual on how to be an adult, just a lot of trial and error that you have to figure out for the most part by yourself. Would not rate it overall higher then a 6. This show really relies on you being invested in the characters, if you weren't like I was, well then you kind of end up not caring about most of what happens. Unfortunately that means at least 2/3 the content becomes irrelevant to you.

Also started Hanasaku Iroha...so far first thought is damn it's a purty show. That scene in episode one where Ohana is on the train is just breath taking. Can't really say much else other then Minchi kind of annoys me a tad(especially in episode 5), but other then that it's been really enjoyable so far.

So im finally getting to my hero academia. I just left off on episode 10 and I'm getting into it the more it goes.

The first few episodes were rough for me since deku was just awful imo. I can't stand mopey main characters that do literally nothing but cry like infants and wow...that's all this kid did. But by where I left off things are looking up. I like the high risk/high reward struggle he has with his powers and I like how he's learning. Hopefully with later episodes it becomes less a thing because I can see it getting old if there's little progress. Also kacchan is a tool....he's a dick for the lamest reason....like his motivation for hating deku is broly level stupid but every anime needs an insane over the top rival guy so....

Then there's all might....the stereotype is real and it's pretty hilarious. Took me a bit to get used to his fuckin weird depowered form but I get it. The other heroes are neat. Some abilities interesting and the designs good too. Though as an american comic fan I don't like the whole "well my power isn't good here so I'll just stand around and take up space till someone else comes along" thing that goes on from time to time....I should be used to that though with all the dragonball z I used to watch....

Oh and the little purple perv is kinda funny. And the rest of the class 1-a cast I really like. Everyone's had good moments thus far. All in all it grew on me. Rocky start for me since i didn't like the main character at the start but I figured I'll give it the first season and by then I'd know if I'd want more. Does it live up to the hype? Maybe....I see why it's got fans and why it's liked but I'm not fully there yet. I greatly prefer one punch man over this as far as super hero anime goes.

I'm watching a show about a guy, a girl, her dyslexic little brother, a devout christian, a talking cat and a jew.

    Anyone guess?

I am sure not liking this season much. I watched Grand blue and Guren no Ou and really did not like either. I like Island, Isekai Maou to Shoukan Shoujo no Dorei and Hyakuren no Haou to Seiyaku no Valkyria. I watched 10 series last season this one looks to be 3 to 5 with the continuation of Gundam Build Divers and Shingeki no Kyojin. Any good shows I should watch?

I mean, Grand Blue is comedic gold, but I guess it only goes for certain people. I loved it though. So far I also like the few you mentioned and Harukana Recieve (bless Haruka, she'd be the girl of the season if it wasn't for...) and Yuuragi-sou no Yuuna, which is similar to To-Love Ru and I'm very happy to see it animated. Asobi Asobase and Chio's School Road and aren't bad for a Slice of Life, Lord of Vermillion or whatever is basically this season's Caligula which is going to be average at best. Planet With and Revue Starlight seem like they're going to be good too, liked the first episodes. so for me I think I have 5 that I'll watch week to week, the others are more whenever I'm bored or just want some background noise

The Wind Rises - Such a beautiful, yet tragic movie. There is so much suspense going into the film given you know where Jiro's dream will lead to Japan and everything that occurs throughout is so well done. His dream sequences are exceptional and I kind of feel like Caproni also symbolizes Miyazaki in a way. Overall, just amazing and easily Miyazaki's best film (even though it isn't my favorite). 10/10.

With that said, I have now watched all of his films in release order, so here is my ranking of them right now (I say right now because repeated viewings on some of them could elevate them):

    1. Princess Mononoke
    2. The Wind Rises
    3. Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
    4. Spirited Away
    5. Lupin III The Castle of Cogliostro
    6. My Neighbor Totoro
    7. Howl's Moving Castle
    8. Kiki's Delivery Service
    9. Porco Rosso
    10. Castle in the Sky
    11. Ponyo
