Hey Everyone, If you've picked up Unicron #0 on Free Comic Book Day today, we've got an exclusive interview to go with it! We talked to artist Alex Milne and writer John Barber all about Unicron #0 and the end of the IDW Transformers Universe. You can download it here. And if you'd rather read than listen, here's a full transcript. Or watch/listen on YouTube:
Interesting to hear how Unicron was planned all the way in 2014 to make an appearance, but it does make sense why they scrapped that idea. Spoiler Rather curious as to who these followers of Unicron will be.
Yeah, while I’d like to see where they could go in a universe after Unicron has been around, I don’t know if they would be any better stories than what we have had since 2014.
Did I read it wrong, or are neither of them involved with the upcoming Transformers comic reboot at this point?
Well Barber is now Editor in Chief, so he’ll be involved with anything IDW does. But they haven’t announced what’s next. I suspect we won’t find out until SDCC in June.
I hope for my "Gateway is Sideways" theory is still holding some true for Spoiler Unicron's Heralds goes for.
Thanks! We don't do transcripts for every show, but we've done them for bigger interviews like this. Hopefully you stick around and check out some of our other shows even though they don't have transcripts!
Is there a place those of us who live nowhere near a comic book shop can go online to read Unicron 0? I looked on Comixology but it's not there. My nearest comic book store is 2 hours away. I want to read it bad, but not THAT bad. XD
It’s not reading them online, but my comic shop has a mail order service and I think you can still order the books and only pay shipping. Here is the info. (Edit: looks like most of the books aren’t there any more, sorry!) They usually do show up on ComiXology, but it’ll be a while.
Thanks! If they sell comics online, that's good to know anyway. I was looking for an online comic shop and ended up just having to buy the issue I had been looking for on eBay since I couldn't find anyone selling issues online. (They MUST be out there, but I sure couldn't seem to find them that day).
If I\'m reading it right... it doesn\'t seem as if there will be a proper \'reboot\' at all. Maybe some one off mini\'s but nothing cohesive and no ongoing? It also sounds like James and John both had endpoints in mind, that would be the finish of both ongoings, and no desire to do any more stories. So decided that would be that. Arguably a lot more to it of course... but... wow. Please correct me if I\'m wrong
The books that come out after Unicron ends aren't tied into the current continuity. There's a Bumblebee standalone that I think stands by itself and then some movie tie-in comics. I'm pretty confident that it's going to be full break from the current stuff and will be a full reboot. James has always said he knows how the MTMTE story would end. I wouldn't be surprised if they are both a little burnt out and want a little break from writing Transformers, but I think be back one day with new stories to tell.
Great, now he can indulge in his fetish for plugging every continuity loophole ever in existence... probably not just in TF comics but everything else IDW does. Unless the writers for the next TF comics after the reboots are names I am familiar with/like, I think it's time I drop this continuity alltogether.
I'm hoping with Barber as EIC there will be more of a focus on continuity. Keep in mind, the current continuity is ending after Unicron, Lost Light, and Optimus Prime are done. They haven't announced what's coming next, but my guess is that it's going to be a new continuity that is designed to have the Hasbroverse components in it from the beginning instead of trying to cram everything in to an existing universe. I also hope there are familiar names as the writers, but that they come from other comics and haven't written Transformers before. This is the time for new blood and new ideas.
