TBF, I think there are some Encores that are Collector's items like Black Megatron, Sunstorm and Detrius... but they were Ehobyy exclusives.

 

Ok, now supposingly IF I've a MIB Unused Black Zarak complete with full paperworks that has since crumbled into a pile of gold dusts, is it a collectible item still?

Can I ask for USD $5K for it? (Even though it's gold dusts, bear in mind it's still...Erm...Unused.)

 

Kinda regretted not picking up those Mars & Snickers chocolate bars when they were being recalled.

I thought the discussion would shift to MP QC issues (i.e. their growing occurrences), but we're talking about keeping defective/recalled merch for their "collector's value"?  

I'm not sure if that's just wishful thinking or obstinate refusal to admit it was a bad purchase!   Either way, it's a long (and risky) call to keep these defective things - you're running on the assumption that Takara will never re-re-release this toy! If no new copies, yes, the toy could be rare enough to get some value; but likely you will see a new release, so your window to hype (and sell) these defective things will be rather small.

Either way, I caution fellow collectors from "investing" in TFs. Their are safer investment opportunities! For example, Amazon stock before their earnings call (shares recently rose $100+!).

No an item with poor QC will not increase in value. Nobody is saying that, you are misunderstanding.

Good point with the black Zarak. One that has NOT crumbled to dust is worth a lot and THAT is the kind of situation we were talking about.

We were discussing the possibility of the few ones WITHOUT major QC issues being considered collectors items due to the fact that the majority did have issues.

Of course the ones with bad QC are junk and will remain junk. In fact will probably be junked by Takara because if mine had been junk I'd have sent it back for a refund.

I still think Gentei Thundercracker had the worst QC of any Takara item I've owned. But he was just more of a loose mess that nothing could stay together right. Rather than a mixup with sound clips.

 

Oh the mix-up on the sound chips is nothing.

The real issues are deformed feet so the cab won't close and you can't put primes feet in magnus.

Two left or right of the same part so you can't form omega prime or even transform into fire truck mode for prime.

And these are sadly frequently found issues. It's a disaster of a release!

 

That's the thing here. You're assuming that a few good copies would qualify as collectors item while I'm seeing a different light from my end.

I'm thinking the same thing as ZapRowsdower above, which is TakaTom already have these molds to begin with so they could possibly have another go at it later down the road (where they're confident enough to ensure that everything works this time round.)

This is Fire Convoy...Or rather, RID Optimus Prime we're talking about here...One of the big 4s which they know they could grab some easy money so I'm very inclined to think that a revised copy will surface in time to come.

Toys that are riddled with QC issues (and I used the word in general) hardly qualifies as collector item. If you're talking about the original TRU DX God Fire Convoy giftset then yes, I'll give you that but these?

Okay, I just sold some stuff to get the money together and sprung for one on TFSource. Honest to god I'm mostly buying it to keep in the box, so if I do have any QC issues they're probably not going to get terribly in the way of my sheer joy of knowing I finally own this specific one, but everyone send me your good vibes or whatever you believe in either way. (Mostly I just need to make sure it gets to my house before I leave for tour.  )
