And even more so, since what you describe would eventually devolve into scitsofrenia, resulting into Smoscreen turning into a G1 Galvatron like, with lucid Optimus like moments.... My main problem with prime was we got so close to a new prime in that scene but it was squandered. I was hoping for a Rodimus Prime but i think that idea you cooked up is quite interesting in it own right and would have been great to see, then again the show didn't really have the time left to do either.
Considering that pretty much the entire TFP was a parade of squandered ideas... It sounds about right. This series never did anything else than teasing changes in the status quo only to go back to the status quo ASAP.
Prime Smokescreen was Hot Rod in everything but name and colour scheme. I even customised an oversized ko of CW Hot Rod as Prime Smokescreen. He was young, brash but well meaning. He also spoke of having a destiny. Smokescreen was a very appropriate name because that's what it turned out to be. He was written to be a parallel of Hot Rod but never got to be Prime. Personally I want POTP Hot Rod/Rodimus Prime to be repainted as Smokescreen/Thunderclash.

I don't think this is how the Matrix of Leadership works, though. It's a receptacle of knowledge of its predecessors, similar to G1. From the moment Smokescreen utilized the Matrix, his memories and personal wisdom would have joined with the Matrix. Instead, Optimus would now be a hybrid of Optimus AND Smokescreen, possibly resulting in some form of "DC's Firestorm", minus the ability to separate. Not tragic at all...just different.
