Interesting discussion about the IDW continuity. While I am sad to see it go (I feel like we could have gotten plenty more post-war stories with different characters, I was hoping we'd get more that focused away from Optimus Prime now that Megatron got a full story arc and we moved away from him). I am kind of excited to see what Unicron does, the fact that it is some sort of continuity ending event is pretty cool.

Although my distrust of marketing does make me acknowledge that this sort of thing has been said previously by other comic book companies and the results were less than satisfying.

Good discussion on IDW. I'm only 55 minutes into the podcast, so maybe it gets mentioned later, but this universe introduced a concept that should now be a core franchise concept just like sparks and the creation matrix:

    Functionism

That's the One Thing that should survive whatever IDW does to this continuity. It's such a better way of explaining how the civil war started beyond "bad guys are just bad", and better than a war over energy or any other resource. It didn't do everything to explain early-IDW era Megatron's behavior, but the concept itself works to explain a lot of the Transformers behavior and motivations. You can still have a war between Autobots and Decepticons, you can move anywhere in the timeline pre/post-war and during the war. I'd keep the TF colonies as well, I'd keep a lot of what they established for combiner tech in late-IDW, but Functionism should be written into TF lore the way the MAtrix, Primus/Unicron, sparks, et al have.

As far as the universe itself goes, I'm one of those who could take more MTMTE/Lost Light forever and ever, but yeah, I can let the whole continuity go. I think we're past the point where some of those concepts will go away forever, this universe will still influence new continuities more than any continuity has before it. I said long ago that it was a mistake to tie All Hail Megatron's continuity to the -ations continuity, and while Roberts/Barber did a hell of a job trying to patch up that ugly seam, Aaron is right when he says too much has accreted to this behemoth lore over the last 12 years, better to cut it off rather than become like Marvel and DC universes. Besides, TF fans are used to new and different continuities coming up every so often. I'll be sad to see this end, but not raging about what I think we've lost, more like bittersweet that something enjoyable has to end.

Vangelus I resonate with you in terms of not liking MCU films that everyone seems to really love because I don\'t like Ragnarok as much as the other Thor films even though everyone loves it.

The caste system from aligned is an extrapolation of the essence of G1 in a way too. Though there it was more military vs average workers, with a few of the cybertronian military defecting from decepticons to autobots when the war started like Warpath who was a heavy artillery military bot, the functionism basis is still there of the caste system.

In G1 in many ways it came across that Megatron started his reign and wanting to rule because they were military and the powerful should control the weak. Granted it was muddied by constant story origin mild changes here and there, but they did finally seem to settle on that the gladiator bots eventually became the cybertronian military after the Quintessons were ousted. And the Gladiator bots were military grade lines anyway. Which is what eventually became the decepticons that started warring with the autobots. Functionism/the caste system is an extension of the "production line" origins of how they were "built". And is also a byproduct of the spark creation lore methods due to alternate forms and society building by using those alternate forms and their capabilities. A bot may be able to scan a tank, but that doesn't mean they can aim or have the will to use it, plus there is their "natural state" original alternate form too that much of their functions in society were derived as what they were naturally intended to do by birth. Which does fit in line to society building and growth from there as a culture. So definitely something they should keep in the lore because of how well it makes sense to how the planet would grow/evolve as a whole.

So functionism/the caste system is probably an element they'll keep in any kind of comic reboot as it still goes to the main essence of the franchise. Same as they'll likely keep many of the other lore additions like the artifacts and colonies that were added because of the AEC trilogy did on that. Though it was also alluded to in G1 too with planet Junk. A lot of where the lore goes is the combining of previous lore or what other media did. Every reboot is a chance to better align it and correct any inconsistencies that were caused because of late additions.

You know... Hasbro does own the toy rights to Power Rangers now... I'm just saying, Comic-Con exclusive figure? You get your Transformers Fans, your Power Rangers Fans...

Redo the heads of the Robot Mode bots to resemble the elements of the rangers, give them each their power weapons...

So the whole Universe is probably over

Same. Ragnarok is fine as a Thor story, but the movie doesn't appeal to me because it does the opposite of what I like about the MCU.

Regarding how my questions were answered, you mostly did a good job. My only regret is how I meant it to be 3 separate questions, rather than a jumbled singular question. Looking at the actual text, I see this a failure of thinking in editing terms, as I should have numbered the questions.

As for what I'd really like to keep, I like the idea that the war started on principles on both sides, but devolved into something out of control. As Starscream said at Megatron's trial, he was basically leading an unruly mob by the time the war got into full swing. I'd like to keep Naughtica around (she's a pretty fun character most of the time). And I wouldn't mind if the next series included some sort of neutral bar that both sides could visit and interact.

Speaking personally, if I were to direct the next series, I'd like to keep Megatron & Optimus as distant figures, maybe with comics focusing on individual Autobot/Decepticon squads. Something more along the lines of a military drama or comedy the likes of the Combat TV series, MASH, Saving Private Ryan, Platoon, and Hogan's Heroes. There's a wide range of stories in this genre that can be pulled on. Basically, I wouldn't mind a comic series that's like the flashbacks from Thrill of the Hunt (TF Animated) but maintained. Not that all Cybertron has to be in a constant state of war, but something akin to WWII with places that are relatively untouched by the major conflict. Mind you, I'm not calling for gritty realism, but something that actually feels a bit more like a protracted war, rather than goofy schemes, minor skirmishes, or fetch quests.

I've no idea what they'll do with the other Hasbro properties, but I'd imagine the answer involves fracturing reality to seal off Unicron in some fashion.

In my head, this is how I meant the questions to be read:

So many things to talk about.

Did you see where I convinced Grimlockimus that he has to repaint Predaking into the Wild Force Megazord?

Regarding the new universe IDW is going to be starting up. I have two takes I'd be happy with. If they're wanting to tie things in better with Hasbro's War for Cybertron Trilogy, I wouldn't be surprised if it starts out with pre-war or very early-war Cybertron. In this case, I would love to see the Autobots and Decepticons get their own books. Autobots gives you a day to day look at Cybertron, along with the friendship of Orion Pax and Megatronus. Decepticons gives you a deeper look at the corruption of the government, and gradual radicalization of the Decepticons. Their first even is the start of the war. After the event, maybe rename the books with new #1s. Call them something like "Transformers: Autobots Roll Out," and "Transformers: Decepticons Rise Up." The focus of Autobots shifts a bit to be about Orion Pax's rise in prominence, and eventually becoming Optimus Prime. Decepticons becomes about Megatron's gradual fall into tyranny.

If the new universe starts out in the present day, I think I would like to see Transformers living on Earth as an established part of society. I'm tired of the "humans hate and fear transformers" story. It went on for way too long in IDW, and has made me not want to see it come back for quite some time.

Regardless of what they do, I hope many of the things introduced over the years in IDW just exist from the start this time.

I think a lot of people are getting the wrong impression about what's going on. This isn't a Marvel or DC style reboot. This universe is getting a finale, and a new one is going to start. Just like with all the different Transformers cartoons.

If you think Steve is being anti-American, then you don't actually know much about the character. He goes against the government all the time in the comics. Captain America doesn't represent the American government. He represents the American ideal. If he believes the government is going against that ideal, he has no problem defying them.

Strangely enough, Aaron, it would be more controversial to say that Discovery is more Trek than the Orville.

With Cap that's just his "Nomad" look for the movie, Black Widow look is a homage to Yelena Belova, the second Black Widow. Black Widow as a former Russian Spy would have trained to not have an accent in order to blend in, so it makes sense (and I believe that has been considered true in the comics for a long time now as well).

SINCE you guys were talking about the MCU and Vangelus's opinions on origin stories, I need to mention how much Homecoming suffers from the lack of any mention of Uncle Ben. Peter does not have the right motivation. Instead of exactly what he said in Civil War, which was basically a "trying not to plagiarize on the paper" was of saying Great Power, Great Responsibility, his entire motivation in Homecoming is "notice me senpai", and the film, and Peter's character, suffer as a result.

Also, I've found that First Avenger continues to improve on rewatch, so that may be something for a rainy day.

See that is interesting to me, I thought that Homecoming was elevated by acknowledging the audience already knew Spider-Man's origin and didn't need to see it for the third time. I compare this to the Pearls dropping scene in every freaking Batman movie, even Batman v Superman has that dumb slow-mo pearls hitting the ground scene. I was glad that we were skipping all that stuff we've scene before, and focusing on a story we hadn't watched on the big screen before, which is Peter Parker struggling with his relationship with his mentor and figuring out how to be a hero on his own terms in a world where there are older/more experienced veterans of the trade he has to reckon with.

The way I have heard it explained is that Discovery is trying to be more like the new movies, more of an action show than a slow paced "think through our problems" show. I haven't watched it, but that makes me wonder if it's just New Star Trek, which while still Star Trek is not Classic Star Trek unfortunately. Is that the sort of thing you'd agree with having watched the show?

This is the first time I've heard Orville getting praise though, I'd forgotten about the show entirely, I'll have to check it out sometime.[/QUOTE]

Chris is right that Ant Man is bottom tier Marvel. It's pure disposable fluff that suffers from every "house style" complaint people have about those movies.

I take umbrage to that. Thomas the Tank Engine made that movie a goddamn masterpiece.

Also Michael Douglas as Hank Pym is phenomenal.
