So last night I received my DX9 Chigurh!! I didn't get to mess with it too much because I needed to see the cosmic action psychedelic fest that was Thor Ragnarok!!

Cate Blanchett makes for one awesome Hel!

    Anyhoo... I digress.

The DX9 figure arrives in locomotive form...

    IMAG9026_1.jpg

    IMAG9030_1.jpg

Personally, I think that his locomotive form is the most accurate out of the two alt-modes.

I've read some comments about how Chigurh looks nothing like a train...

Perhaps, he doesn't look like a modern bullet train, or a commuter train... but I think he resembles an old locomotive. He just needs a cattle prod.

    IMG_20170524_081133.jpg

Where I think he fails to deliver is as a realistic space shuttle. While it looks okay as a stylized space ship, an accurate representation of a space shuttle this is not.

    IMAG9049_1.jpg

    IMAG9051_1.jpg

The DX9 Chigurh space shuttle alt-mode is a bit too stout to ever be mistaken for a model of a space shuttle or anything remotely representing the vessel used throughout the 80s and 90s by NASA.

    p3b.jpg

Now of the three modes, my thoughts on Astrotrain was that he was never the most striking of a figure. In the cartoon, he was pretty blocky in bot-mode, not very aerodynamic in shuttle mode, and fairly ugly in train mode...

    astrotrain-cartoon.jpg

So, if I compare DX9's Chigurh to these images above, well... it's not like they had some streamlined, visually dynamic looking character from which they could use as the basis for their triple changer offering.

    They had this guy...

    96a4ae26f54457ad8beb581d26679897.jpg

I think that DX9 Chigurh looks better than the character image above!!

The figure below looks like evil "robotified".

    IMAG9117_1.jpg

    IMAG9060_1.jpg

    IMAG9062_1.jpg

However, like much in life, DX9 Chigurh's bot-mode is not perfect by any stretch. In fact, I find the figure equally ugly in all areas and aspects.

The figure's feet and legs look unfinished. And there's too much texture and greeble to place appropriately sized faction symbols.

Oh... and his forearms are kinda hollow.

But, I think he scales well, and photographs well with others, including KFC's Ditka!

    IMAG9122_1.jpg

    IMAG9141_1.jpg

    IMAG9154_1.jpg

And here he is with Cloud9's Quakeblast to increase the amount of purple in the photographs...

    IMAG9168_1.jpg

    IMAG9159_1.jpg

So he's not really the most striking of 3P MP figures out there... but he definitely scratches an itch that has been in need of some attention for several years now!!

    Cheers!!

This is why I was sure to marry a fellow subculture/nerd/geek/goth girl!! Sure, we might have disagreements about who might win a fight between Indiana Jones and Han Solo, or whether Joy Division was more influential than the Cure... but when it comes to blowing hundreds of dollars on collectables... we are equal opportunity offenders!!!

Just received my copy. It was stuck at the SF custom for a week for whatever reason. First impression is pretty good. He has very good shelf presence, and evokes GI Astrotrain vibe even though it is not 100% cartoon accurate. I love the face sculp!

However, I had 2 small QC issues. One was that the piece where the head was attached to was installed upside down, and it prevented the transformation to the shuttle mode. I had to push the pin out and flip the piece, and now it works like a champ. I have seen a Facebook post about this issue, and I am not sure it is a common occurrence in the re-issue. The second issue was that the triangular piece at the root of the wings were installed on the wrong side, and it prevented the wing roots from tabbing into the body of the shuttle. They were not pinned, and were easily taken off and re-installed.

Overall, I really like this representation of Astrotrain, but I am still not sure if this will the definitive MP version for my shelf

Some people think they stole shuttle design from the old Buck Rodgers TV show:

I'm in the "possible" camp on that one.

How are his ankles and feet? Mine are sorta loose but he can stand....just don't push on him. I really need to future up his joints and fix it someday.

    Seconded, mine too.....

I got mine from showZ. Actually, in their listing for the figure it shows the head being installed wrong and a pictorial of how to fix it....

    Screenshot_20180401-053449.png

I was kind of terrified to try the fix but I put on my big boy pants and completed the task. I'm not the most handy person by a long shot....

Anyway, it's a very nice figure in my opinion, a bit too stylized honestly, but nice none the less. If FT or TT ever do one, I would most certainly switch out......

Having owned this since its initial release, that is my impression as well. I would eagerly and gladly replace this on my shelf if a true MP Astrotrain ever drops (particularly since my KFC Blitzwing and Octane are SO screen-accurate), but I'm also definitely glad I have him there right now.

My biggest gripes were the hollow forearms, the absolutely HORRIBLE hands (WHY were they designed like that?), and the kind of gimpy-looking legs, but I did like its appearance. The actual cartoon version of Astrotrain is one of those designs that doesn't seem like it should be terribly hard to do, but then again the fact that nobody has done it yet means I might be wrong and it could be deceptively difficult. I ended up putting faction symbols on his shoulders rather than his wings, and I rather like the look. (I put MMC Mirage's symbol on his shoulder as well, to not mess up the vehicle mode livery).

I wonder did anyone every find a pair of suitable hands? Gray preferably...
Can't think of any KFCs that would fit this.

I haven't seen anything better although there are other more G1 style takes.

The best available... at the moment. Actually its the only available at the moment as the Fancy Cell one is really too short.
But there's reports that KFC/XTB have an MP Astrotrain in their cue.
    Kfc/Xtb Astrotrain
Wether you're happy with their QC/ history is a very personal thing but most will agree that they're one of, if not THE most G1 accurate designers in the game.
Personally I've never been even slightly tempted by Chigurh, he's just horribly ugly and clunky in bot mode .The feet, legs, arms, hands etc are more "cheap Hasbro toy design" than MP. I'll settle for that kind of ugly for something like Sandstorm who's unlikely to get another MP take but Astrotrain is too big a character for that. I'll just patiently wait for KFC.

That is up to you. Shouldn't be asking other people how to spend your money. That said, FT could be a few years before it comes out and will likely be in the $200 range. DX9 has been out for a few years and can likely be found for half that. Also, the two figures look completly different. Don't be a sheep. Buy the one YOU want not what someone else tells you to buy.

I bought a reissue Chigurh last year and it was a QC mess. I don't know whether that's a known problem, but it was enough in line with my recent experiences with DX9 figures and terrible QC that I didn't bother trying to get a second one.
