Killing key characters off in between movies is the laziest reason to explain their absence, and it unnecessarily causes you to write yourself into a hole. Plus, you know it’s just going to piss off the fans who spent a whole movie getting to know them and seeing them get a happy ending. That’s one of the main reasons people like myself hate Alien 3. At least the Alien movies have a dark tone to them, this is a franchise that is all about how fun it is to watch giant robots fight giant monsters. Spoiler It would have made far more sense if Raleigh and Mako matured and took over the Stacker Pentecost role after his death in the original, and it would have been much more satisfying.
I'm really excited to see this, I've already made plans with my friends to go on opening night (this Thursday at 7:00.)
God Dammit! They just spoiled the whole movie! Bit by bit each trailer has spoiled big parts of the film. We also see how other Jaegers get destroyed. Geeze, do they even want us to go spend money to see this now? WTF! I can now totally piece the whole damn thing together. This is ridiculous! I also noticed that Gipsy's back wings can now change/transform. They're different in different scenes. They used to be down in all the trailer scenes and now they're up in some of these previously aired scenes. It seems they're still working on the CGI up to the very end. Cutting it close guys! I guess Bandai will now have more excuses to sell new/different Gipsy toys...I sure won't be surprised to see a Robot Spirits Gipsy Avenger "flight mode" figure suddenly appear. Ugh. Now they want me to buy him all over again. I don't buy that bullshit. Mako was in the ante verse just as much as Raleigh. These points from the book and the film's director completely conflict. If there's one thing I've learned from movie "novelizations" and movie "comic adaptations" its that they don't mean shit compared to their films. Sometimes they are deliberately different to not spoil the actual film, other times they were made from old scripts that are no longer relevant. They are always pushed out ahead of the film's release because that is the most profitable point in time to sell pre-movie supplemental fiction. Is Raleigh dead or is he alive? The prequel novel says he died while a mere 4 days ago, the film's director and Guillermo say they would want him to return for film 3. Even the alleged Reddit pre-screener leak said he's alive and well, just not a part of this new adventure. I put more faith in the guys running the show than I do some book pushed out in advance to cash in on the pre-movie hype. Just look at his reply in the interview: Charlie couldn't return because he was already contractually obligated to another film, a film that shot at the exact same time as Uprising. So maybe he can free himself up for round 3. I liked Raleigh. I liked Mako. I liked Herc Hansen(where's he at?). I would gladly pay money to see them suit up once again and kick some giant alien ass. The original surviving cast was all great. I'd love to see them return. And for God's sake, Bring Back Hannibal Chau! Did he ever find his missing shoe? Such a cliffhanger! We must know!
First review I read is Cnet, no spoilers however the short version is "it's missing something without Del Toro at the helm, but it's just a fun blockbuster." Fine by me. Live Action Giant Robot Anime.
The part where Mako and the mega-Kaiju develop a forbidden but passionate relationship? Ah, I jest, I jest, Shape of Water was great. I'll miss the Del Toro touch, and the superiority of Crimson Typhoon, but so long as robots and monsters beat each other up, I shall endure. Bring on the release date in my turf!
I figured it would. Del Toro has certain...Depth to his movies. He’s a great world builder. I think he enjoys creating the background things just as much as the things that’ll be right in front of your face. Like in the first movie, you know things are bad, you know the war is being lost. Del Toro doesn’t beat you over the head with it. He lets it out slowly, mostly as background stuff. The wall builders being paid in ration cards, doing hard, Dangerous work, and getting paid in food. A jaeger pilot getting excited over Bread. It’s not just what you noticed at first glance, Del Toro makes movies that you can notice new things several watches in. As long as it’s a good action flick I’ll be happy.
Don't forget some of the stylistic touches like "NEVER" scribbled over the completion date of the Wall. Fine by me. Del Toro really brought something of his own to the genre, but he opened the door for a serious, albeit fun and entertaining Giant Robot movie that focused on the genre rather than using the robots as background props... like some other... series we all know... be that as it may. Uprising is at least shaping up to be enjoyable to the TARGET AUDIENCE. Gizmodo just posted their review too and while it feels like the same commentary as CNET, they at least go into the depth of saying the new characters bring something to the series. In a world that's recovered from the Kaiju, the people on the ground are still living in the dirt and the reveals of new Jaegers and Kaiju are just pure fun.
Yeah, I never like it when it happens. It also explains why I disliked Independence Day Resurgence (a movie that took itself too seriously compared to the original) when Will Smith isn't around and was replaced by a stoic and uncharismatic son.
Good news! Unless it’s clearly stated in the movie, you can just ignore the tie in novels and imagine Raleigh at home taking care of the kids. Keep that in mind during the movie. That the entire time Mako is being an Iron Lady on screen, her husband is at home taking care of the kids. A nice normal life. Getting the girls to school, puttering around in the yard, gardening. Constantly fueding with old lady Rothstein from the neighborhood committee. “I fought giant monsters, I helped save the world. If I wanna put Daffodils in my front garden, Daffodils I will have!” Old lady Rothstein’s eyes narrow, devoid of mercy and crueler than any kaijus. “We shall see Mr.Mori. We shall see!”
All the reviews so far are saying the exact same thing that reviews of the previous movies had. Things that I felt were really well done in said previous movie. Think I'm gonna enjoy this one
I just came back from my early screening... IT WAS AWESOME!!!! I cant wait for the 3rd one... edit: also, hey bay, this is how you make a giant robot fight scene... it look like giant robot fighting another giant robot.. not a pile of scrap metal rubbing each other..
