Bullshit... every other single figure they've released is spot-on and its own original design. It's a load of crap that their UM is a repaint + armor setup when that is NOT what the FOC character was.

Now I love me some armor-formers. And ya UM was that in the G1 toyline.. I absolutely don't mind that setup when it's an update of an older existing armor-former or a completely original design.

But this is not that. This is FOC UM getting screwed because PlanetX got lazy.

Man the UM armor is meh, but that white repaint jeezus do I want.
But since it sounds like this may shelf warm, I'll wait for it to drop in price a bit before pulling the trigger.

    Huh.

I agree, it doesn't look like the toy, but UM in the game looked like this:

It looks darn close to the image above:

    Am I missing something?

Robot mode (especially the head) is spot on. Many dislike the alt-mode and the fact that he's a powder-puff white Optimus w/add-on armor vs. the FoC version where he's just Magnus, not an Optimus clone.

Many collectors here do go after figures for their accuracy to the source, including alt-modes and origins.

Bot mode, no problem. Alt mode, quite a bit off. No "junk" hanging off the side in the game version i.e. the vehicle's sides are flat with the wheels. Also the robot arms are visible on the side making the vehicle mode longer.

That alt is just horrendous :sly: . After the weird tolerances on megs, cutting corners on UM , and not reissuing Neptune PX better get their shit back on track for me to shell out cash in the future.

I'm not. He looks like a perfectly serviceable Ultra Magnus to me. I'm a big fan of the Aligned continuity and the base games in general. While I'm sure that Planet X could have gone through and re-engineered a FoC Ultra Magnus from the ground up, I don't mind that they don't, nor do I find this to be a terrible toy. I think the armor makes for a fun nod to G1 and doesn't really take away from his presentation.

PX has always taken some liberties with the designs. While they generally seem to aim as close to the images on the games as possible, every last one of them have some noteworthy differences. FoC Perceptor's altmode is a mess compared to his much sleeker in-game appearance. Omega's starship mode is wholly inaccurate. PX's Swoop's proportions are off. Etc. Etc. As a result, PX making an "inaccurate" version just to capture the feel of the character in general fits right in with their design philosophy.

Which brings us to Magnus. IIRC, the only canon appearance UM made in the games was in the DS version of WfC. This toy is based on a design that came from the FoC Multiplayer DLC. Arguably the Multiplayer FoC Ultra Magnus isn't even canon, having no actual impact or appearance in the actual game. What he is (or is not) in my opinion is pretty much up for grabs.

If you don't like the design, that's cool. If you think PX was lazy and should have done better, that's cool. But I don't think we can sit here and say what FoC Ultra Magnus was or wasn't because we really don't know. I also don't think that calling PX out on their liberal design choice is 100% fair because they make them almost constantly - we just rarely see them (or care about them) because on the whole they make great figures. I suspect we'll have to agree to disagree on this, which is fine. That's why we get different versions of things.

I will agree, however, that that hammer seems oddly tiny.

It's a friggin hammer. Not a warhammer, nor a Sledge hammer, but a simple ONE HANDED hammer. They were small, period. They had to be in order to wield it effectively in one hand. They were never anime-exaggerated, ridiculously honking huge. If you don't like it, don't have him wield it, but GET OVER THE FRIGGIN HAMMER, people!

the hammer is not too small if it was magnus the construction worker,
and came with a tool belt, a cybertroinan screw driver, and a cordless drill

Most club or bludgeoning weapons are designed to be an extension of the arm. Even if we're not talking anime-level silliness, the average war hammer is usually a polearm looking thing with a weight at the end of it. Even more modest war hammer usually has a forearm-length grip to hold onto.

FoC's magnus hammer looks like a lunchbox on the end of a handle the proportionate size of a toilet paper roll, and that just ain't right I tell ya what.

Does this look like a smithy or construction worker to you?

    Btw, that's a standard hammer he's sporting.

War hammers are not one handed. As I stated above, Apollo isn't wielding a War hammer, he's handling a standard hammer used in battles. The kind the were made to fit in one hand comfortably so they could use their other hand for shields or whatnot.

Semantics nothwithstanding, the hammer seems shorter than Magnus's forearm. The sample image you provided shows a guy with a hammer as long as his entire arm.
Even ignoring the practicality of a weapon that doesn't really extend your reach for no discernible reason, I really shouldn't be looking at a badass warrior robot and wondering why he took his lunch pail to a fight. :p
