This is the first I am hearing that MP Combiners were attempted. Yes Hasui said he wanted to, but unless I missed something there is no evidence that they were ever actually worked on

Don't know why it couldn't be. Here's a direct link to that timestamp, thanks man!

Hahaha, I hear ya. I've even been friends with two of those guys for over a decade (Brett and Duron, I live in TN, not *too* far from them), and I still can't tune into their podcasts (or any others for that matter).

Yeah, I suspect it's all of the above. Times have changed, VW has come around. Porsche probably doesn't care much for the violence (maybe more in the past than now), but they're just being a PITA even beyond that.

Probably in short - there's various reasons that they don't want to play ball and are difficult to license with, and hopefully one day TT can work it out (or just give up needing this license and make something a little more toon based).

Rumor I heard was they were making a MP Devastator, but for whatever reasons, ended up taking the designs and continuing them in the CW/UW set instead. But that's like...heard from a friend who heard from a friend who heard from a guy type of shit.

I agree. It was never stated that they were attempting them. In the interview where Hasui talked about Devastator he said that he had some ideas saved up, which he might have used for a possible MP Devastator, but then decided to incorporate into the UW version.
It seems that people are already misremembering or mixing up info.

As usual, it's quotes blown out of proportion and a case of Chinese Whispers blah blah blah

Original quote from Shogo Hasui, regarding the development of UW Devastator:

Q: In total, this is considerably close to the G1 version, right?
A: Concerning the points that are designed based on the original G1 version, it’s constructed similar to a masterpiece (transformer). The toy of course incorporated elements of the anime design. In fact to clear the tight development schedule, there are parts where I appropriated ideas for use in an MP Devastator that I had written down a long time before. I thought: “doesn’t this seem like the only chance I can make a giant MP Devastator, if I do my best here then the thing that the fans eagerly waited for can be realized”. I had the sense that there was nothing like it before. If it surpassed a masterpiece wouldn’t that be terrible (smile).

So, Hasui used some ideas he had already had in mind for a Masterpiece Devastator. Huge surprise. In every interview with Hasui since 2012, when asked what he wanted next in the MP line he said combiners. It was his only chance to make a kind of MP Devastator since he was no longer on the MP line. He was happy that the decision of scale was to fit a rough Masterpiece scale, too. It's not a huge surprise that he had some ideas jotted down for how things could work, he was passionate about the line. I imagine Kobayashi has a notebook somewhere filled with ideas of how to make certain things work in certain future MPs.

This in no way means that we'll never get any MP combiners. And it doesn't mean they scrapped the idea of an MP Devastator to make the UM one. Though I wouldn't be surprised if Hasui's constant desire for MP combiners led the design team to say 'hey, let's try these out at a lower price point first, shall we?', to test the waters.

I feel if they plan to make BW MPs, I feel they will only go with the major characters first and the minor characters last. So we may not see Scorponok and Terrorsaur for a long time.

I mentioned that a while back, but no one believed that it was a sign that TT would make triple changers.

One has nothin to do with the other . The triple changers ( who we all know who THEY really are ) I’m sure will come eventually. Once TT gets there hands on those 3rd party versions , and reengineers the crap out of them we’ll have some of the best , if not THE BEST versions of the triple changers ever. This I foresee...

So long as we get a cartoon accurate Astrotrain, then I'm game.

Didn't it take years for Microsoft to get them to agree to putting the cars in Forza?

Also have to remember they bitched about licensing for Alternators Jazz, thus why he never happened.

Re: combiners, I won't be upset if it doesn't happen. I am very happy we now have all the canon G1 combiners in CHUG form, but realistically to complete them in official MP form, we're probably talking at least ten years, and that's in a world where price is at a sweet spot, stability isn't an issue and licenses have all been obtained. I'm far more invested in getting my season 3 faves like Galvatron and Springer as MPs.

Don't forget Red Alert. And at that rate, the 5 S2 Minibots, Perceptor, & Blaster all would likely have the same Ark crew backstory as well. Please, I'm trying to watch the number of Ark & Nemesis crew characters needing an MP figure go down, not up! ;)

But now that I think about it: didn't the Insecticons' get mentioned by Megatron in their first episode as being Nemesis crew members who stayed behind when the other 'Cons attacked the Ark, and then escaped in stasis pods or whatever as the ship crashed on Earth? So there's also more Nemesis crew besides just Reflector still to go?

Geez, again, down, not up! Guess TT really better pick up the slack in this case! ;)

Has VW recovered from their recent scandals with emissions testing and whatnot? Are they perhaps currently desperate enough to sell licensing rights where they wouldn't have just a few years ago to try and cover lost ground? Maybe if Porsche were to get knocked down a peg or two by some kind of scandal, they'd be a little more willing to play ball as well?

Something tells me Smokescreen1980 might be an accountant. Or an actuary. Or something similar. If it doesn't make financial sense, it doesn't make any sense! ;)

We don't have a CHUG Piranacon, Raiden, Monstructor, Road Caesar, or Landcross yet

Because "bad guys don't sell in Japan" right?

Ha - no, I’m sports presenter in actual fact. I don’t mean to say this stuff to be a dick - I just think that if you want to speculate on what is likely to be released next, it helps to follow established patterns and look to what fits. So far there has been no release of any non-leader figure that hasn’t had a repaint possibility as another character, and that’s why I’m so sceptical about a lot of the stuff suggested - but also certain that there will be Skids / Crosscut, Blaster / Twincast and Trailbreaker / Hoist soon enough. And Galvatron, because he’s a leader and so his mould can be recoloured as himself (in grey) and enough people will buy - see Primal, black Rodimus, Soundblaster etc. I’m afraid I can’t comment on Beast Wars because I never watched it.

By all means dismiss this theory - I’m not saying my opinion is any more important than anyone else’s - I’m just saying that it’s worth remembering that TT exist to make money, not to make your dreams come true.

I did get it a little bit wrong earlier on though with what I (mis)remembered about Hausi’s comments so I apologise for that. Sorry everyone! (That said, I’m still certain that for all the other reasons of cost, licence, sheer engineering difficulty and limited market when CHUG already exists, you’ll never see an MP combiner)
