Can the Silver Paint on Reximus Prime Oversized KO of MP Grimlock be removed? And is it the correct grey color plastic underneath to match the real MP Grimlock and FT Dinobots (grey plastic version)? I've tried to remove silver paint off of other figures, but Silver doesn't behave the same as other paints, most likely because it contains metal flake. I've tried using Super Clean and Distilled Alcohol and it'll take paint off, just won't take SILVER paint off. Has anyone done this successfully SPECIFICALLY with REXIMUS PRIME? HELP!
If you take him apart, try "Purple Power" available at walmart. I use it to take off all kinds of different paints and chrome coatings. Its safe for Most plastics but it eats metal if you leave it in. fill a small plastic container with it and drop your parts in- 30 mins to 1 hour later- clean plastic. May need a soft tooth brush and multiple dunks for stubborn stuff.
Just don't let it sit too long, there's more than a few plastics, PET, PVC and styrene to name a couple, that will start to craze and become brittle from prolonged exposure.
HI Jammer, thanks for your reply on my post. So I bought Reximus Prime (1st version, comic colors). I also bought 90% isoprobyl alcohol. So what's next? How long do I soak it? Then it just sluffs off on its own? Or do I have to scrub it with a toothbrush or something? scrub while in alcohol? or under water? I appreciate the advice. oh, and did the plastic become brittle or discolored? did some of the silver not come off? Thanks for your help! -Atto
Soak the parts in a tub for around 45 minutes, then go at it with a magic eraser sponge and a soft toothbrush, rinse & repeat. With that combo you wont end up with any residue or scarring unless you let it soak for way too long (more than a few hours). I think Mecannibal V was talking about various plastics in general, not just Reximus. But do watch out for any transparent plastic, I've had experience with clear parts starting to melt and dissolve in isopropyl.
Have you actually done this on Reximus Prime itself? Or are you just laying out procedure in general? My limited experience in removing silver paint by only soaking it has been unsuccessful. I've already tested a small piece left in alcohol for two hours. I tried using a q-tip to remove silver little by little but nothing is coming off. In my experience, silver is really strong and doesn't come off the same way normal colors do. But the other guy Jammer seems to have been able to do it, but he's not replying yet.
I don't own a Reximus but I do have experience with stripping tough paint. There was a thread some months ago on the subject and a "magic eraser" was the first thing that came up, I've been using them since and they're, well, magic. It's a kind of micro-scrubbing sponge and it works miracles for pulling off stubborn paint. There is one problem in that it doesn't reach corners or crevasses easily, but a sturdy toothbrush and a toothpick will work better than a q-tip.
