Not taking the blame away from Transformers, but the new Pacific Rim movie looks horrible.

I don't think there is one film that will kill the Transformers franchise. It's more a case of the rest of the movie industry moved on while Transformers wasn't able to evolve, people eventually get bored and move on to other franchises if it feels like you are just doing the same thing over and over again. The other factor will be if Paramount can find some sort of franchise to make money film after film. A place like Disney could say we can let Pirates sit until we figure it out, but Paramount has slim picking at this point.

Pacific Rim is a wonderful movie, and PR2 looks like it will strike gold again, Transformers could learn a lot from it.

But I don't see the connection to aTransformers demise. And anyway, the Transformers MovieVerse is set to self destruct.

For a while there, Transformers was the ONLY robot franchise in the cinema.

I assure you that, looking back, the short circuit franchise, the robocop franchise, and the power rangers movie franchise (the old ones) caught a ton of heat as well. And that was decades before TF2007 even came out.

If the TF franchise, which has been so maligned and ill-thought of they're currently filming the sixth movie, can be brought down by a film franchise with less than two films, the second of which only came together after years of lobbying due to the middling success of the first film, maybe it's time to take a break from TF films.

I say this as someone who enjoyed Pacific Rim way more than the TF films, but no Pacific Rim film came out this year, and TLK still fared below expectations. I don't think Pacific Rim has any blame to bear if the TF films tank, it'll be due to their own quality.

Fuck you mean "gonna kill it" shit's already dead. The problem with this franchise (and I know I'm gonna sound like a pretentious film major here but it's the truth) is that there is NO artistic merit or even attempt at anything resembling storytelling here. This isn't a problem with blockbusters either, you can be a blockbuster movie and still have themes and lessons and shit. The themes of Winter Soldier were the payoff of privacy vs. safety and just how much of our personal lives are we willing to give up in favor of sleeping well at night. Civil War was about government overstepping their boundaries. Hell even Michael Bay has proved he can do this - Pearl Harbor is a horrible and disrespectful film but it's at least about people coming together in the face of tragedy.

What the FUCK were any of the Transformers movies about? I mean they KINDA allude to MAYBE a movie SORT OF being about something but never fully commit to it and it feels tacked on and lazy. The only one that sort of had a theme was Age of Extinction, that being the fact that Cybertronians were human too. To the films credit, this is something that's super interesting, and I WISH the movie explored it more, as there's so much that can be done with it. The philosophical route of what it means to be alive and question your existence, the satirical route of racism and dehumanization... Maybe not something as unsubtle as Transformers living in slums and shanty towns (hi District 9) but something more than (to be fair a lot of) scenes that make references to sparks and souls and being human vs. being machine.

All the other movies? Bullshit. It's like they flirt with the idea of having a theme or lesson and then just forget it. Transformers 1 was SORTA coming of age but not really, ROTF was just nothing at all like the Writers Strike really fucked them there, DoTM was SORTA problems with bureaucracy but not really, and TLK was again, nothing at all. TLK is actually worse than ROTF in that regards because TLK only exists to set up future movies and it's fucking terrible. The writing in the final battle scenes is some of the worst fucking bullshit I've ever heard.
"One shot Prime, that's all we got"
"Everyone can be heroes in their own way"
    "Is it tomorrow yet"
The lamest, cringiest, half assed writing I've ever heard in a film. I'm not kidding. That isn't hyperbole. It feels like they weren't even fucking trying and instead just copied and pasted lame inspirational quotes from Facebook into the script.

The problem with the Transformers movies, whether anyone wants to admit it or not (and I know there's going to be a million fanboys responding to this defending the movies because in their minds the films are immune to criticism [side note if you think these films are immune to criticism, you're wrong]), is that too many people who have a huge hand in making these films don't give a shit about telling a good story. Bay knows he can half ass directing it and still break even, the writers know Bay doesn't care enough about story and can half ass the script, the producers just want to make a profit so they can half ass anything they do (except for Spielberg thank you for being a friend to the franchise). The only people who I think care about making something good are the cinematographers (there are some nice shots here and there) and the effects team.

Tl:dr - these movies are dead already

The only thing Pacific Rim killed is my fanaticism for Guillermo Del Toro.
