That's funny I just read an article saying 63.58% of all collections are made up.

I look forward to the new line-wide gimmick of "backpackmasters".

For real though, I cannot frigging wait for this guy.

I can forgive that backpack if they just paint the ugly bare plastic. I mean look at that picture of TT sunstreaker, or any recent TT masterpieces. Head to toe paint. Get with program FT!

Root needs that backpack to haul all of his meds and alcohol. ;)

Don't pick on him! He's OLD. This FT is way better than the G1 toy. Back in my day, the G1 toy had only half a head! And we STILL loved him! :p

The backpack does not bother me, it's the hunchback that makes me think Quasimodo.

    But MT's Downbeat is different.
He reminds me of the toy and toon, much like Hasui's designs did. It's not perfect as I'm not a fan of the few sacrifices they made on the altmode and the transformation although enjoyable is finicky, but the botmode made no sacrifices. He's completely clean. It feels like a toy as if from a new design, good in and of itself, even without all the references to G1 Jazz. I'm not hating on takara mp's as I love this toyline but if you look at mp sunstreaker I think the ambition is just to great and you get sacrifices like his huge backpack (but yes I'm still buying it because no toy is perfect).

Damn that is a honking big back pack. I normally waver back and forth between FT and XTB but I was feeling FT on Kup. This has made me uncertain again. Locke is still only in very early render stage though so it's hard to know what to expect.
I think I'll be holding off on decision making. Unfortunately XTB seems to have surpassed even FT in terms of showing lots of designs and dragging out the release schedule.

The backpack is big, but I tend to be more forgiving towards backpacks than ugly facesculpts (which usually stop me from buying a figure altogether) or lack of surface detailing. So as long as it doesn't impact the way the figure looks from the front, I can deal.

You can get IDW styled figures from Hasbro Generations and MMC Reformatted anyway. I just don't get the point of adding that stuff, it's a waste of plastic. At least Takara's accessories are actually relevant to the character.

He's a big deal for me too. I guess we'll see why it is this way, or if there is any changes once reviews start coming in. It makes sense about what you're saying. I think we're defintely used to a lot more cleaner backpacks from them. So I think the real question is why did they decide to do this if it were possible to make it more convertable? I'm curious to find out.

Agreed, Downbeat is nowhere near the same category as TT Inferno. Howling Meteror IS in that category and that's why I'm not buying it. Downbeat has just enough detail in him to avoid the completely flat, 'toony look. The only place I thought he needed more styling and didn't get it was his midsection, but given the transformation scheme that was likely difficult, and the seams and joints there help break it up visually in a similar way.
