I pre-purchased and pre-loaded a few days ago. Gave it a good hour, so brief first impressions time...

    • The controls are solid, including the free-aim. I was worried the game would be slowed down by being rooted to a single spot when free-aiming, but it actually flows very well.
    • Melee Counter isn't easy to use. Well, it is, but quicker enemies (like the Metroids) are definitely challenging to keep up with and use it against them. Luckily, you're perfectly free to ignore the Melee Counter and kill things the old fashioned way. At least, in the first hour, anyway.

I went to Walmart this morning close to opening to grab the game, but it wasn't on the sales floor. The cardboard display was up and everything, in addition to the barcode tag. I asked an associate to scan it and it showed 3 on hand. Sure enough, they couldn't find the damn game, so I wasted 20 minutes of my time for nothing. This EXACT same thing happened when Street Fighter for the Switch was released. This store never has their shit together.

Well this is bullshit. Apparentely there are items that you cannot unlock without the Amiibos. That means Nintendo is pretty much forcing microtransactions on this game. -_- FUCK YOU NINTENDO!!!! I should not have to pay $100 to fully play the game I BOUGHT!!

We've known about this for about two months; where have you been all this time?

Also, its not like the items are a full on necessity to the games. The new Samus Amiibo unlocks an extra energy tank as well as a Metroid 2 art gallery. The Smash Samus amiibo unlocks an extra missile tank and a Samus Returns art gallery. The Zero Suit amiibo also unlocks an extra energy tank and a special soundtrack. Finally the Metroid amiibo simply reveals the locations of the Metroids... and is required to unlock Fusion Mode (which I admit is full on BS).

Even so, how the heck can you make sense as to compare amiibo with microtransactions, THEY ARE NOTHING ALIKE!

The concept of having figurines that interact with a game inherently requires that figurines be sold and that they actually do something of value in the game. I have mixed feelings on that myself, but there's not really a way around it and there's no need to relitigate the entire concept every time a new game uses amiibos at all (which, let's face it, is going to be every Nintendo game for the foreseeable future). That gets old pretty fast.

At the very least, there are two upsides to Amiibo versus normal microtransactions and other NFC game figurines. For one, Amiibos tend to be reused across several games. If I already bought the Samus amiibos for Smash Bros., then I get unlocks in Federation Force and Samus Returns for free. The other is that the unlocks are almost always minor and always unnecessary (an A.I. partner in SSB, costume colors in FF, etc). Hell, I am probably going to buy the Metroid amiibo and not even use it as I'd rather find all the Metroids on my own.

Yeah, Fusion Mode being locked behind an Amiibo (one only available in a two-pack at that) is bullshit, but the other three seem harmless and unnecessary. Assuming, of course, that those extra tanks don't count towards game completion.

I was told the stuff would be unlockable manually, the Amiibos were just used to get them immediately. Not that there were items locked out completely. That is assnine ******ed.

The only difference is I have to buy physical pieces of plastic to unlock items. They are still microtransactions because I have to hand over real money to access features in MY game. This is no different than the Disc Locked Content Crapcom used years ago.

Oh, and I WANT the art gallery.

Anyway, I do think it is pretty awesome that Nintendo made a reversible cover using the orignal GB box.

OK, now you're comparing microtransactions to disc-locked content which sounds to me like you're just using the term "microtransactions" for a sort of catch-all term for all forms extra paid content when the term is supposed to refer to a specific type of paid content.

Microtransactions means using real world money to buy additions to the game that are already programmed onto the disc/cartridge.

Metroid has content that is programmed onto its cartridge that is locked unless I buy an Amiibo.

Amiibos have to be bought using real world money.

    Thus, it's a microtransaction.

The only Amiibo locked content worth being upset about is Fusion Mode, and even then it doesn't bother me. I mean, all the sounds and artwork are going to end up on the internet anyway, and singular reserve tanks are pretty minor. Fusion Mode doesn't bother me because the game is challenging enough on it's own.

Well that's not quite true, is it? For a start, you don't have to buy an Amiibo--the game is perfectly content for you to use one you've borrowed from someone else. A single amiibo can be used with multiple copies of the same game. That's pretty different. And if you do buy an Amiibo, you can also resell it once you're done with it. I don't recall that being possible with on-disc DLC or microtransactions. Additionally, access to a single amiibo can unlock content in multiple games--even games that didn't exist when you got it--without requiring any additional money. That's not like a microtransaction at all. It's got as much in common with a preorder bonus as it does with a microtransaction, (though it's still less problematic, since it isn't unavailable after a specific window).

The more you look at it, the more you have to realize that while there's money involved at some point, the locked content and the specific transaction are not directly coupled. They look like on-disc DLC purchases to you specifically because you're looking at the prospect of buying these figures for the sole purpose of unlocking this specific content. The opposite scenario is someone who collects amiibos for their own sake (they are neat little figurines). To that person, this content is all a neat free bonus, and something fun to do with the figures they've already got. Both experiences are valid, but subjective. Neither has a proper claim to define what the relationship is, because it differs from person to person, and there's even a range of experience between these opposites.

Honestly.. You can look at the Amiibo as Titan masters.

Extra, gives you a bit extra.

Using such a broad definition like that is just bound to cause some misunderstandings and needless arguments some day. That said, its just as Flamepanther stated: just borrow the necessary amiibos from someone who already has them. There, you get the extra content without having to spend a single cent.

Wait by no one having them do you mean they were all already sold out or they were just not stocked yet? Which is it?

Sold out. Fred Meyer only had 4x of em, sold em all in the morning from what the worker said.

One of the Fred Meyer still had the collector's edition (the one with the CD) tho.

I got the amiibo package at toys r us it was like 30 bucks but I viewed it as rather then chase it down for another price I just eat it now and save some gas. Also managed to get the special edition of the game, neat reversible cover and soundtrack cd. For an extra 10 bucks I guess that ain't to bad.

Game itself so far is very solid and fun

Well I just finished up a nice 7 hour run. The game is so damn good. Sometimes the metroid bosses are a little frustrating, but nothing too bad. It is so nice to play a Metroid game again. The controls take a little time to get used to. In fact, I still forget to hold L1 so I'm not running and shooting at times. Same goes for the melee button. I've yet to even figure out how to melee the other two versions of the Metroids.

Anyway, I love the overall look at the world, especially the area sthat have creatures in the background just chillin. There was one that decided to dive into the water in the background and then I've seen a giant centipede thing crawling around. It's pretty cool. Sadly, the music is as lackluster as it was in the original version. I forget it is even there some times.

Can't wait to dive back into the game some more either later tonight or tomorrow.
