Onionskinning is a stop motion technique that shows semi-transparent images of your previous shots overlaid on top of the live camera feed so you can ensure the figure is lined up properly relative to your past photos. It's much like an animator flipping through previous drawings whilst working on their current one to keep everything lined up.

So, chatting with @LazyEyebrow about the intro, we worked out which shots he needed me to work on, and I figured this would be an easy one to do first. It was always my intention to tackle the S1 intro, but I figured I'd put it off until I'd completed most of my Episode One (by which time more official MPs may exist). So, rather than just film Hound and Mirage (the figures he's missing), I decided I may as well have the other bots 'in the bag' while I was at it. Also of course, I'm using the original toon background/effects whereas he'll be using his realistic alternative.

I must have seen this sequence a thousand times, but I swear I never noticed Laserbeak in it until going through it frame by frame!

    Behold!

Knowing the work that goes into something like this, I'm amazed at how quickly you've put this sequence together. You must have your process down pretty well by now!

Fantastic work, as usual! I'm really looking forward to seeing both versions of the complete opening!

Figured I may as well, mainly so that I could post a gif :lol
    Thanks!
Yeah I have a definite system. Actually the most troublesome aspect here was the billowing smoke, which gets more translucent as it passes across. That meant I couldn't use the originals because of the cell characters showing through, so I had to recreate the art for it in opaque form, then make that see-through!!

    This post... is EPIC.

Personally I find editing existing footage more satisfying than doing stuff from scratch, mainly because you get results quicker.

Earth vs Klaatu? Poor Cosmos :lol
It was just a quick gag, but the problem with trying to match stuff like that is you could go mad if you wanted to do it seamlessly! The film footage wobbles and moves and has constant grain etc - that establishing shot in the second gif annoys me because Cosmos is rock solid while the ground under him undulates, but for the time it would take to fix that it's just not worth it!

Thanks guys, that's good to hear :thumb

Cheers, I thought he would be obvious but forgot that once in black & white his distinctive colour scheme disappears! Not sure how many people really got that gag.

I can't in honesty claim I spotted it from the mould but I knew which Headmaster partner it had to be! ;)
