Also, if everyone 'free pre-ordered' everything, how long before retailers feel the hurt of excess stock and buyers pulling out at release?

I don't get the practice. Surely a retailer needs a firm commitment on actual paid up pre orders? And the manufacturer the same for their production run?

    The term is:

    A) Virtue signalling
    B) Not in any way applicable here

All people are trying to do is demonstrate an enthusiasm for a product that pre-orders apparently did not. It may not work, but it leaves a better taste in the mouth than yet more untargeted forum cynicism. God forbid people try and enact some positive action.

IMO it looks like MT's experiment with selling more stuff on their online store has been working well and now they plan to take the next step. This cancellation is too close to the actual release and the project has had a lot of positive buzz to just be cancelled. Their official statement makes it clear that they leave the window wide open. I expect either a crowdfunding thing like MMC's Artifex or a regular made to order selling period like Bandai does for their web exclusives. With being pintpoint targeted by one KO maker, preordering culture going extinct and stores not overstocking like before due to the oversaturation of 3P; directly selling to the final buyer looks like the logical choice.

Hard to imagine they'd cancel this figure that is so well designed, but move ahead with the G1 MP Meteor that's such a phoned-in effort by comparison. Is MakeToys trying to prove they're no longer top tier? Or are they just stirring up controversy to bring more attention to the figure and thereby more sales?

edit: @Turnman might be on to something.

Disappointing, I planned on buying this but not immediately upon release. I never preorder anything but I have bought most of their re-master figures. Think I'll drop them an email later.

The preorder model doesn't work, imo. I do t preorder anything, because I want to see some QC, finish, articulation, etc, before committing. And I don't like taking advantage of no money down preorders with the intent to drop the preorder unless it meets my standards. Seems unfair to the retailer.

I hope those who think the window is still wide open are right. It would be a shame for such a fantastic figure not to be made. Not to mention it seems foolish to cancel this late in the game, with all the sunk costs of design and tooling already spent. Seems to me that you might as well go for at least a small run to recoup some costs. Once it's out, I would think word of mouth would drum up more sales than might have preordered. More than I've I've had little interest in a figure until it had been released and people were waxing enthusiastically about their purchase that I was seduced into ponying up.

I blame this seeming perception that to sell a lot of 3PTF toys today there should be the word "Masterpiece" associated with the toy. If this toy was the same price and size as Rioter Despotron I would have ordered one. I simply do not buy toys over $100.

The only maketoys figure i had was their computron and i sold it because the scale is too small. It was solid, and also the design is futuristic. I think MT needs to have a backbone product first, some kind of a flagship before exploring to other things that can be too risky. I hope all is well and MT can make it up again.

Being pissed at MakeToys is pretty pointless. They're the ones in contact with the vendors. If the vendors tell them that preorders and page hits are way down and want to scale back their orders, then it makes sense for MT to cancel the project.

I don't see how that has anything to do with it since many figures cost well over $100 and sell out just fine. The demand for "masterpiece" grade figures is very high. Your personal decision not to buy toys over $100, like your interest in a lot of no-name junk CHUG-scale KOs, has no bearing on this product. If you don't buy over $100, then this figure, which costs well over $100, was not relevant to you anyway.

Some people mentioned that this is a marketing ploy to drive interest in the figure. The figure is ready for release, too far ahead to simply cancel it.

The figure was available at TF NATION. Maketoys must have a small stock of it. Are they going to sell the rest as an exclusive at their store?

I have no idea what that is. Looks like the one from the videogame, but I guess it's not that.
