I like that Overlord's base mode is less busy than either SS's, or his parts-forming G1 namesake (although the two TRs could both use more weaponry). To me, Overlord's base mode looks like a cross between a 'rocket base/launching pad' (think G1 Micromaster Countdown), while the positioning of the tank parts almost evokes a 'mobile battle station' of sorts. Sky Shadow's base mode looks like it's trying to be more of an immobile, stylised 'city' - with the jet wings doubling as extra 'ramp/roads' - but TBH, I'm just not sure that it quite pulls it off.

Agree totally that Overlord's jet mode just looks cohesive, compared to SS's.

I think Sky Shadow has a more pleasing color pallet than Overlord. It a very good "classic super robot" bad guy design and paint scheme. If it was based on looks, I'd go for Sky Shadow.

That said, I have more attachment to Overlord from owning the Hasbro UK release back in the day and eventually watching the TV series from Japan.

Functionality really isn't any different. This isn't like Alpha Trion and Broadside. They're basically the same apart form a few molded details and the paint. If you don't know anything about the characters, the design differences are the best way to determine which to buy.

Or if you just want it now, Amazon has Sky Shadow for $40 right now. Free shipping.

I wonder if a silver sharpie to the eyebrows would do him any good.

If people were expecting IDW design cues from a toy line that is almost religiously based in toy product, that's their deal. Just remember, this toy wasn't just designed for Walmart in America. It was designed to be sold in Japan, which did have this guy on their shelves back in the day. And on TV. Hasbro is more than happy to throw diehard fans a bone when it comes with Japanese characters, but when the toys are designed to be sold in Japan, expect them to be based on the original cartoons and toys, not a modern American comic.

CW Liokaiser was never meant to be sold in Japan, which is why it bears so little resemblance to the cartoon or toy model.

Overlord is being sold in Japan. Hasbro models this line based on their toys, Takara changes theirs to match their TV shows. We are getting the Hasbro UK Overlord homage. They will get the Masterforce one. It was the exact same mold back then, so don't expect much difference between them apart from the usual paint apps. They will probably toss on in Mega and Giga, like how the God Ginrai got two of the kids. That's all to expect.

I suspect that some 3P (Perfect Effect?) will make an add-on to give the toy its human pilots if Takara doesn't.

Well that and Hasbro had to make him out of five repainted CW figures with new heads instead of the 6 new molds that he needed to be accurate to the original.

I suspect that if in 2018 we start seeing some more Victory characters, and Takara might then take a swing at making their own Liokaiser.

Anyone know why the 1.5" front of the jet mode is removable? It doesn't really seem to do anything.

You mean this part? Because that's how it was originally and having it on his shoulder is part of his iconic appearance. plus it's so a mini figure can have a vehicle to pilot while he is in robot mode.

    That's a lot longer than 1.5"

So no, that's not what I'm taking about.

I have really short nails, and I really struggled opening the top cockpit the majority of the time... I 'think' (well, I'm positive haha) it's a design choice so it's much easier to open both cockpits without pulling too hard & possibly breaking something.
If you pull the front piece off you can easily flick open both cockpits, I find it so much easier doing that most of the time :thumb

    Makes sense.

Question: can both parts be attached Overlord - one on each arm - for dual shields? The small one looks a similar size to Sky Shadow's drone/shield (could it likewise combine with Overlord's gun a la SS?) Just a thought...

I wonder if this fanmode configuration would look any better, minus the front part of the jet:

    No worries!

Anyways decent figure. Not sure when I'll upgrade to the Takara or MMC one. I figure this guy is pretty good except his head is just waaaay too big.

Beware - the gun handle snapped off in the tank almost immediately. The gun is coated in paint, and I think that makes the connection too tight. We ended up fixing it, but you may want to consider sanding the handle proactively if it's tight on your copy as well.
