The character of Dragonstorm presents a unique challenge to Hasbro, a dragon consisting of twelve knights. Rather than give us a Prime Abominus style combiner with many small bots combining into a large one, the designers elected to give us a two bot combiner, or duocon.

The toy is far better served by this choice, in both modes. Dragonstorm is an imposing dragon with a large amount of molded detail. Its three heads are made of soft plastic. A word of caution to those opening this figure, be sure to clip all of the plastic holding the heads in place, as the company has gone a bit overboard in securing all three heads to the box. You may risk damaging the figure if you pull it out before clipping everything first.
The dragon mode features 30 points of articulation, with 12 of those coming from its three heads. Each head features four areas of articulation, including a ball jointed base and movable jaw. Its front legs have ball jointed shoulders and an elbow swivel. Its back legs have universal hip joints, thigh swivel, knee bend, and movable feet. Each wing features three swivels, and are pretty stable. The tail can be adjusted slightly. Their is weapon storage for the two swords underneath the wings, which is pretty discreet. There is also weapon storage for the mace on its back, but since that looks fairly awkward i imagine most collectors will not display it that way. Its positives include its ability to hide nearly all of its robot kibble. The hands inside the neck arent really a big deal since their placement and the articulation of the dragon necks mostly cover them up. For weaknesses, the paint job is a bit of a mixed bag. The dragons eyes are unpainted, but the silver on the dragons back and wings are very well done. I feel the silver clashes with the black heads a little too much, and I wouldve loved to see this figure in mostly black paint with red highlights, as every other figure of dragonstorm in this line has been colored as. In spite of the paint job, this is a good alt mode for a dragon.

For the robot modes, first I will touch on Stormreign, who becomes the dragons back and middle head. Stormreign features sixteen points of articulation. Ball jointed head, ball jointed shoulders, swivel arms, bicep swivels, waist articulation, universal hip joints, swivel thighs, knee joints, movable feet. His head sculpt is fantastic, but my copy appears to be missing red paint. He can store his mace on his back. He definitely captures the knight theme very well. However, he does feel somewhat hollow, and his back does not clip in to place, instead it is held by friction, so it is not as solid as I would like.

Dragonicus features 17 points of articulation, not including the articulation in his wings. Ball jointed head, ball jointed shoulders, arm swivels, bicep swivels, universal hip joints, thigh swivel, double jointed knees, ball jointed feet. Dragonicus is a much more fully formed bot and does not feel hollow at all. It almost feels like he is a true voyager figure with an expansion figure. He headsculpt is great and the paint choice really shines here. He can store both of his swords on the wings. His weakness is his oversized crotch, but every other part of his bot mode is pretty solid so I find it to be forgivable. As such, I feel Dragonicus is easily the stronger of the two figures.

In sum, while Dragonstorm isnt a Leader figure in the traditional sense, it is a fun figure set. We also finally get two more traditional looking knights that arent plagued with joint issues like Steelbane was. If you are only buying one TLK leader, then it is easy to recommend this figure over Megatron.

The orange on the dragon heads is weird but this seems like a fine toy. I saw a video on how the combination works and it's certainly unique.

Is there a chance you can do a robot mode size comparisons with a voyager and deluxe figure?

Either way I'll probably get this just for the uniqueness of it; thanks for the review!

Any chance you can share what the dragon mode looks like without Stormreign? Dragonicus looks pretty solid, but Stormreign looks like a mess. I'm curious to see if you can get something decent out of just one bot and ditch the other one.

@Optimus Prime No problem Optimus, it an honor. Also, I have you displayed in defeat under Decepticon Nitro's heel. I thought you'd be angry about that, but I'm glad we're cool. Decepticons for life brah

Can you explain the neck braking in box why does it break? Is it a problem with the plastic the toys made of or the restraints?

I was intrigued when it was announced and figured I may go for it given an enticing sale, but with some clear pictures TBH, it moves to pass territory for me.

yeah, be cautious when removing the heads.
Just look at this vid, the head on his broke easily when he tried it pulling it out not realizing the head was also tied to the box.

Same here. I was thrilled to get another big dragon figure, but these shots really make it undesirable.
    Quite disappointing.

Still going to double-dip on this set, one for the 2 knights and another for the combined form

It would break if you ripped the toy out of the box like an idiot. If you take the time to cut the plastic clips youll be ok. On a much lighter note....Lord Scorn has a new mount!

It would be fun to put this guy in Dragon Mode against Cybertron Scourge and Beast Hunters Ultimate Predaking in a fight for best Transforming Dragon!

That's what I thought. Another reviewers say that if you are careful the figure will be fine.

From the video it really doesnt look like he use a lot of force to remove the figure. Glad I'm not that interested in this guy.
