No...KOs are challenging the industry right now. I think in a year companies like weijiang and jin bao will have the capitol to make own molds.

KOs are driving 3rd party costs down..

This is the golden age of 3rd party right now

Jinbao KBB, YES Model etc have taken designs and made them better in most cases. I KBB or Yes Model Seeker is usually better than the Has/Tak.
Jinbao Predaking and Warbotron Bruticus are superb and sometimes better than the original. They OS'd them and on the Warbotron Bruticus one made everything ratcheted.
KO cheaper than the original? Yes, I'm looking; KO cheaper and better or scale I want? Yes take my money.

If TT is going to take almost a decade to get to MP Ramjet after their first MP Seeker, you know I'm going KO. I'm not getting any younger.
If the QC has sucked on MP Ramjet, do you think I'm going to spend $100 more on TT Ramjet or go get me a Yes Model? Getting MP seekers from Takara at the time was also too difficult.

KO of a 3rd party? Not having a problem here. Warbotron, MCC, etc made their money. You paid $500 something for Warbotron back in 2014/2015, then you had a Bruticus on the shelf 2-3 years before it became irrelivant for the people that had decided they didn't want to pay $500 something for that. Warbotron simply could of sold it to KO 3rd party to milk that mold one more time. Don't think they care because they made their money.

Isn't most of the cost of development of a new figure the molds? That's what I'd always heard... that they're thousands and thousands of dollars.

And isn't the engineering mostly a done by a contracted guy working in CAD and then a few 3D prototypes? I don't imagine he gets a lot of money for a single design.

KO makers have to make the expensive metal molds too. If that's much of the "development costs" right there then the much lower selling price isn't completely explained by them taking someone else's design and saving development costs...

Honestly, it's because I'd love to see some behind the scenes stuff on how these KO toy factories work.

I do CAD for a living. Mostly 2D, but I've also worked quite a bit in 3D.

So I very much want to know this process- particularly the upscale process.

I've been googling it lately and have come up with nothing.

Time to start hitting the CAD forums.

That....ummmm....Robert Cop looks way worse than what happened to Murphy before he became Robocop :lolol  I can't even call that a KO. Maybe a gag gift or something. And "special man???" Yeah...he does look..."special." Like a Chinatown supermarket special.

No shit, I did mostly 2d CAD for 10 years. Different field now. Funny, the upscaling is what interests me most too. It could be something as simple as they have the means to steal the CAD files.

    Hah, RobertCop.

I think the various religious icons carded with assault rifles are among my favorites.
    Although, this is good too,

    In AutoCAD it's easy.
I don't know all the 3D programs, but in Solidworks you do not simply "scale the model". There are just too many variables for that.

It's one question to ask "how did they duplicate and upscale Evasion OP 3 years later so accurately?"
But it's likely an entirely different question to ask "how did they duplicate and upscale TLK Megatron before HASBRO's toy hit the shelf?"

Thanks for sharing that. I think the interesting theme of this video is that the Chinese will share designs to continue to make better products. Companies like Wei Jang and KBB have made a name for themselves doing exactly that. I think they are different than the parasitic companies that make counterfeits and attempt to get them out as soon as possible to compete with the original product.
