More Jaeger RD figures revealed!!! Steven's Toy Reviews: BANDAI TAMASHII NATIONS ROBOT SPIRITS PACIFIC RIM UPRISING AT SDCC Also these have alot more paint apps than the promo pics of them. And there's also a High Grade Gipsy Avenger model kit. Bandai has fucking DELIVERED on PR2 harder than NECA ever attempted for the first movie.
Hmmmm... I think the teaser trailer is pretty good - except for that annoying rap music. This Pacific Rim world is becoming more compelling the longer stuff like Bayformers exist. The jaeger's emphasis on melee combat makes sense, since blaster cannon's require a lot of energy and it's not exactly feasible to haul too much physical ammo around either. Plus, they still need to minimize environmental damage as much as possible. I guess you could perceive this video as a future kind of war propaganda poster/recruitment poster, with the jaegers all looking posh and glossy. I hope they'll look grimy and battered in the actual movie. So, the Remember portion states it'll be 2035, ten years after the breach event - but the oceans are still restless ? What does that even mean ? I wonder how this scenario will manifest itself. 7 jaegers....so... that means....mankind certainly hasn't become complacent. Really anxious to see what the Kaiju folks have been up to and how they have evolved.
Well, only Gipsy is that cheap, the others are $32 USD iirc. Still not bad, they're certainly gonna be better quality than Neca so I can't complain. Plus they all come with a lot of accessories, like Titan Redeemer coming with a smaller robot named "Scrapper" apparently. Preeeeetty excited for this line, although I hope Bandai goes back and does some P1 Jaegers eventually because the P2 ones are fairly generic by comparison. To be fair this isn't really a trailer, just an in-universe recruitment ad. Barely a teaser really.
I agree, they're fine robot designs, but they're all very samey in aesthetic and there's only two radically different silhouettes between them all.
They weren't ready to show off actual movie footage in time for SDCC so this recruitment type ad was probably the best that they could show. In terms of the designs, it always seemed like this would naturally be the direction that the Jaegers were heading towards. Each successive mark generation had sleeker designs than the last, with Cherno Alpha being the clunkiest looking among the four in the movie while Striker being a mark V was the sleekest looking. You would then expect a mark VI to be even more advanced in terms of appearance.
But at the same time, the "Mark" categories only existed as an explanation of why all the Jaegers looked so different, rather than a rigid philosophy that must be upheld. I think either Cherno or Gipsy were actually changed from their original Mark designation, because it really didn't matter. The fact that each one was unique and had its own personality superceded in-universe Logic. Afterall, Striker was original Gipsy's design, even back when it was to be an old, repurposed Jaeger, yet it became the state-of-the-art Mark V. Plus, not all Mark I Jaegers shared the same body build, ditto Marks III, IV, etc. It's not the fact that all the Jaegers in PR2 look sleak and high-tech, it's that they all look very generic and lack those little character flourishes that made the old Jaegers more distinct. No giant guns, giant blocky fists, cyclops-heads, massive reactors or extra limbs. All just fairly humanoid, largely "kibble-free" robots. Even the armour plates lack the detail like Striker's cool elbow plates and wings. In fact, only Gipsy Avenger looks all that unique, as an ironic switch from the first movie, because of it's subtle head crest and more elaborate armour and chest reactors giving it some kind of distinctive elements.
Come to think of it I wonder if there's a story reason why the new Jeagers aren't exactly as characterful and interesting as the old ones? Like what if the theme is about how humanity's starting to get a little cocky again about taking on Kaiju that it's reflected into how the Jeagers look like and made? Sort of like the cliché of something that looks to better then the old thing but it lacks the heart and care about what the original impressive and important in the first place.
From left to right in that frame from the teaser trailer: - Guardian Bravo : due to the colors he reminds me somewhat of Achilles in Robot Jox. Yeah, this one has a Robot Joxy feeling to it. - The unnamed one : LOL at the Alienware kinda look : - Titan Redeemer : Hmmm, the jaeger with the most asymetry due to that gigantic morningstar. I think this one reminds me most of Cherno Alpha ( see legs and feet design ). - Gipsy Avenger : Seems to follow the automotive design trend : everything looking more geomtrical ; works out pretty well in this case imo. Gipsy Danger had that B52 bomber jet kind of vibe...sort of antiquated. - Saber Athena : Sort of pleases me as a fan of the Crimson Typhoon design. This more human styled Athena is more conventional indeed, but maybe it'll distinguish itself in motion in the movie. At least the Typhoon style wings are still there. - The next one, unnamed looks a bit weird with the neck collar. - Then the last one... is that even Bracer Phoenix or not ?
Well, the more human-like Gipsy Danger and Striker Eureka were the ones who saved the Earth at the end. Cherno and Crimson went down before they could help with the big push.
I'm thinking they all look so similar is because they took the two most successful Jaegers (Gipsy and Striker) and decided to mass produce more Jaegers similar to them. Kinda makes sense in-universe I think.
The new jaegers are a little generic looking. Still, I have hopes that John Boyega will do well with his role in this sequel, though I do miss Idris Elba's Stacker Pentecost (still one of the most epic names of fictitious characters ever conceived).
Part of the reason the Jaegers may look similar post Kaiju is streamlined design, build and repair. IE if the majority of the units from a certain side are built within the same basic things, again design, component usage etc, its easier to fix and get them back in the fight if they use the same parts. If they are no Kaiju to fight the nations and their military's will adopt a similar war like mentality that the jaegers are no more than military equipment, like a fighter jet or tank.
They're all humanoid like those two (unlike Crimson Typhoon and Cherno Alpha how they weren't completely humanoid silhouettes) and all but two are fairly slim like Gipsy and Striker. That was my point. The two (or three was it?) bulky ones are probably only bulky because they need something KINDA brutish against some kaiju, probably.
