How would you feel towards a version of the Wreckers that are made up of former criminals?

Okay, in before someone comments that some of them are that (Whirl, Impactor).

Let's go full force with this idea: Prowl decides that there are some missions he simply won't even send an Autobot on. These are the missions that, due to both their nature and the risk/danger, even his logic won't let him send them out. The things that he finds objectionable.

So he comes up with an idea: Implant bombs in captured Decepticon's heads, along with cameras in their eyes and vocal recorders. Then command them to go out and do these missions with the knowledge that, should they succeed they get a chance for freedom but only after a doctor like Chromedome (but more... in the gray scale of thinking) wipes their memories and they are given new Autobot bodies. Basically, you do this and your past is gone and we give you a new life to fight as a true autobot. It's either that or you die.

He hires Lockdown to lead the missions, the only one there by choice (as he likes credits). Or maybe a captured Doubledealer. Then he picks the worst of the worst and sends them off to do his business.

That sounds like an interesting idea, though I was thinking more like the Wreckers are mostly former war criminals.

I think a Wreckers movie would be great if it was the Transformers version of The Seven Samurai.

Transformers with any Akira Kurosawa flick would be beautiful. Because Akira Kurosawa.

What popped into my head just now is Yojimbo: Drift as the ronin, and the Wreckers and the Mayhem Attack Squadron as the two gangs.

I like the idea of something like this. Don't change the Wreckers into something they aren't, create a new team.

Yeah that would work, put them under Autobot control and there you have it, you're own Transformers Suicide Squad.

    I concur.

Plus, in a way, this is sort of already happening with Krok's team in the comics, isn't it?

The wreckers are a death squad but they are there voluntarily. Looking at IDW and G1 marvels comics, they all want to be there and all want to participate. So technically they aren't a "Suicide squad". They're more independent and do their own things, but also do some of the dirty work of the Autobots.

As agent Fowler so kindly puts it:
    "Hmmmm..... Black Ops."

Kinda? They are still independent in their own way though.

Well, the original post wasn't too specific on that particular dynamic.

I read it more as inviting thoughts on a team of former bad guys who were working towards saving the day.

The Scavengers are pretty much that.

Coincidentally, the term "wrecker" is also a term used for sailors who scavenge wrecks...so, in a way, Krok's team are literally new wreckers.

I look at the Wreckers as the Expendables of the Autobots- they take on missions almost guaranteed to kill most.

Keep in mind: I've never read the comics, I only know their reputation and flavor from TF Prime and DOTM- so as far as I can tell, they're just a bunch of reckless Autobot punks.

Except the suicide squad aren't former criminals. They still are criminals. The only reason that they do good is because the explosives implanted in their heads will be detonated if they don't cooperate. So if the Wreckers were like the Suicide Squad they would have to be team of Decepticons with explosives implanted in them so the Autobots can control them.

To be honest Suicide Squad is a terrible idea that is near impossible to convincingly pull off. There is just a lot that can go wrong not only in story but also with the writing of the story. If done right it could be awesome but if any tiny little goes wrong with a story like that the whole thing could turn to garbage.

For example, some criminals are just too crazy to be motivated that way. If you have a character who isn't afraid to die then threatening to kill them would go totally against the character. Plus I really can't picture any Autobots who would even consider using a team of Decepticons that way especially with Optimus as their leader. Maybe if set in a time with Sentinel Prime as the Autobots leader and maybe when Optimus takes over the team gets disbanded. Maybe the team could even some how cause Sentinel's death.

That being said, modern day Optimus did let robot-Hitler become captain/co-captain of the Lost Light...so...Optimus seems okay with letting crazy evil people run missions for the Autobots now.

From what I've gathered the Lost Light crew was formed post war in a time when Optimus gave up his position as the Autobots leader. That would explain why he's gone back to wanting to be called Orion Pax even though some characters still insist on calling him Optimus. It explains why Autobots and Decpticons are working together. And it explains why Megatron also seems to have no command over the Decepticons anymore. So I don't think Optimus ever approved of having a Decepticon on the lost light crew.

Optimus sits as judge in Megatron's trial and has Megatron put on the Lost Light as a captain as a result. Megatron was not really working with the Autobots, but then basically surrendered when Bumblebee took a blast to protect him.

On the ship Megs believes he is being given special energon that weakens him to keep him in check.

Actually, the Lost Light crew is almost a Suicide Squad...it has genocidal maniacs, murderers, breakers of ethics codes, mutineers, gus who were cimplicit with Decepticon death camps...they almost all have shady pasts, even the Autobots.
