I saw Val Kilmer about 6 weeks ago because he was in all places, my town, to premier his Einstein movie at my Town's High School. Only way he's getting in the air is if a heavy lit cargo plane does it.
Yeah, this is one of those movies that never needed a sequel. Right up there with the Goonies sequel that they keep trying to kick into production.
I usually like movies with Tom Cruise, I think. I don't know if that movie needs a sequel, but it could be cool. I think if I were to make a sequel to a movie that came out so many years ago, I would not call it Topgun 2. I would acknowledge it's part of the universe of the first movie, but call it different. If they make it more like the Mission Impossible movies, that'd be nice.
I think he found his calling with the Mission: Impossible movie franchise. I think The Mummy will be a terrible disaster, we know Jack Reacher: Never Look Back was box office dud, worldwide and I'd imagine a sequel to Top Gun set 30 years later is a TERRIBLE idea.
He's in his 50's now, I don't even think he would still be a pilot. Maverick would be flying a desk by now, maybe commanding a ship.
So is this going to incorporate drones? Like Maverick has to prove that his young pilot recruits are better than the drones they want to replace them with, and he breaks protocol at the end for one last mission with them as a passing of the torch.
Sounds like their needs for revenue are writing paycheques their box office returns won't be able to cash.
It's Tom Cruise. I think it's safe to say he doesn't want to use a lot of CGI. The man has a pilot license, and we know he's not afraid of riding on the outside of a plane.
Cgi would be useful for the inside cockpit shots. The blue screen effects traditionally used in cockpit shots, always look fake to me.
I can see the movie going these routes with one other thing. That being Goose's son hates maverick and blames him for his fathers death. He wants to beat maverick to prove he's the better pilot just as much as maverick wanted to beat viper.

Yeah, if they give Cruise the Tom Skerritt or maybe Michael Ironside role in this movie, it will make sense. But if they still intend him to be a young active pilot well into his 50s, it will be ridiculous. No CGI is an unrealistic request. The original movie used extensive model work in addition to actual plane footage. The modern day equivalent to model work is CGI. There will at least be some.
