After the undeserved backlash he got for his portrayal of Black Widow in AOU (god forbid she developed feelings for... a MAN!), I hope he has better luck with this one. Seems like a natural fit given how many times he's talked about it in the past and his interest in strong female leads.

Yeah that's not what the backlash was, you know, about at all. You confusing the anger about her back story and the nerd rage over Hulk not being with Betty Ross as being one thing.

Me I'm not jazzed about this. Avengers and AOU worked because of the firm hand of Marvel film on Wheadon's shoulder. WB has shown they don't do that.

Hope they base it after Chuck Dixon's Batgirl Year one.

Bullshit. On top of those things, there absolutely WAS a backlash about her having romantic feelings for Banner. Tons of people were running around the internet whining that by her allegedly flirting with Stark before, then Cap and then Banner, Whedon had made her look like a desperate weak woman that needed a man blah blah blah that diminished her strength blah blah blah. It was ridiculous. Hell, his own Twitter account was absolutely bombarded with 'haters' accusing him of demeaning the character, which just happened to coincide with him deleting his account for a while. It's still all out there, so don't tell me that's not what it was about *at all*. It's all been VERY well documented, and I'm sure 90% of anyone in threads like this here even remembers it.

There was also the part where they misread the line "Still think you're the only monster on the team?" as an allusion to not being able to have children.

I'm not on board with this.Whedon is a good screenwriter, but a mediocre director. At least he isn't directing a big film like The Flash or Man of Steel 2

Pretty sure that is the major part of the backlash, last I checked. It did kind of go under the case of Unfortunate Implications.

Yeah, and that was one of many examples of how some people went out of their way to be offended by nothing. When I heard that line, I took it in the context of "I was a trained assassin AND have killed many people before I found refuge". Never for a second did I take that line as being anything related to her not being able to have kids.

Awesome news. I'm glad he's finally coming to the DC side... lol. Hopefully they'll get a good screenwriter to work with him. His plans for the Wonder Woman movie he never got to make sounded great, so this should end up really good. I wonder who they'll use as a villain. I don't expect them to go this route, but I would like to see them utilize James Gordon Jr. for this.

Her developing a relationship had nothing to do with the backlash and everything to do with her awfully written speech which came across as her comparing her inability to have kids to being a monster and her time spent in Avengers and AOU being terrified and whimpering in front of Hulk and Ultron while none of the male leads ever showed any sign of fear. Also how badly the "romantic" scenes between BW and Hulk were, with them taking no proper time actually developing this bond outside of a single scene of them mildly flirting beforehand.

That was undoubtedly the intention but it was written so awfully that that was absolutely how it came across. The whole scene was a fucking mess and should've been fixed way before the film was released.

It sounded to me like she was calling herself a monster for letting them take away her ability to bear children. A whole mountain range of guilt and regret on her shoulders, that was.

I'm actually amazed WB got Joss Whedon back.

I recall the AOU controversy was about her being sterilized; some women took offense at her saying she was less human because she couldn't have children, saying it was unfair to women who couldn't have children.

(I myself thought that scene was awkwardly written.)

Terrified and Whimpering? What movie did you watch? I don't recall any BS with BW showing fear or terror at Hulk and I certainly don't remember her being afraid of Ultron. More like calculating and determined to glean some info while she was captured. Honestly how does anybody see half of the stuff they allege a character did? Maybe I missed something, but I don't remember any Terror or Fear responses from Black Widow in Age of Ultron.

I took it more like that she was calling herself a monster because she did things she still feels remorseful about and that she was modified to be only a killing machine and not have normal human functions and feelings.

I also feel that I think people were missing the point of her and Banner's attempted romance because what they have in common was that they both felt like monsters that don't deserve any better from society and so they have empathy for each other. I don't see how that makes BW any more weak for wanting to have a life that doesn't involve fighting and killing people. After all people never got on Steve Rogers and Bucky about them wanting a normal life.

Anyway I hope that the Batgirl movie under him will do well because at this point WB needs the best talent they need to bring people's trust in them back.
