I had this idea, what if you could rent some toys you know you could never buy, for like with carnifex a week for $20. How about that?

Well I don't know if I'd considered it "renting" (though I suppose its similar) but the idea of being able to mess with an expensive figure in hand before committing to buying it like one would do at a con is an appealing one.

I'd much rather own a figure than rent one. What's the point of keeping a toy for only a week or two? Most people on these forums only use them as display pieces, so keeping one for a week just seems silly.

No. It's either I buy it or I pass on it.

I would prefer not to. I'm a germaphobe and touching and fiddling around with a figure that's been possibly molested from unwashed peed/pooped hands, sneezed on or coughed at, would be a nightmare for me. I'd rather split a figure cost with a good, trusted, hygienic, and gentle friend and share that.

I guess this is why I don't buy loose or anything less than MIB for that microbiological fear of mine. Even with MISB stuff, sometimes I even bust out the isopropyl alcohol to do a basic clean/wipe down on unboxing.

If I was able to rent stuff I'd probably buy a whole lot less.
Like Fort Max. I'm curious about him, but not curious enough to fully pull the trigger.
Or like Titan Devastator. Maybe having him in hand would have convinced me to go ahead and buy one.

I've thought about toy rentals but wouldn't know how to pull it off.

Oh I can so agree with this, though my issue is mostly with oily susbstances. I always wash my hands before I handle my figures.

You know that topic would make for a good thread.

This is one of the reasons why I don't buy used figures.

It's cheaper to just befriend a couple local hardcore tf collectors.

Kidding aside, it is pretty cool how some fans get together through local meetups, and bringing figures to share.

I actually thought about this, because a lot of people basically buy expensive toys and later on sell them for near (but lower) what they paid right? So essentially whatever the difference is between the purchase and sale price is essentially rental for the figure.

So I genuinely thought why couldn't I buy a toy and then rent it out for, I dunno, £5 a week or something. That way people can at least experience the toy... but then the figures that would be most desirable to rent would be the highest priced, and if we bring 3P into the mix the most complex and thus how would you get around the problem of people breaking stuff while renting? Deposit?

I wouldn't mind buying used figures as long as its a face to face meeting, and ifthe figures/owner passes with flying colors on my non-scientific, highly subjective, perhaps condescending attitude that if I see the owner sporting poor hygiene, or feels 'greasy', or smoky, then the deals off. Plus the figures should be at least MIB and everything is complete.

Well if you could afford $20 a day to rent Carnifex, you could... I don't know... save up that $20 for a couple of weeks and then purchase it?

Being able to mess with a buddy's toy can be nice, but renting? I'd rather just buy the toy or skip it completely.

    A big nope for me.
There are many factors.... These toys break easily, I like the "from mint" experience of opening and fiddling with a new toy. I'm big on ownership.... its MINE! My OWN! MY.... something.

Germs and dirt are also a factor; I've bought some toys from a smoker and they are still smelly after several years. I like the idea of used toys, to enjoy what someone else is done with, but I give them a good cleaning.

You encounter germs and dirt every day, undesirable material would probably cling to a plushie more so than a hard plastic toy. At any rate the concept is unusual at best.

I wash everything that comes into the house.
Especially used toys, if they can't survive the cleaning, they weren't meant to be.
