i couldn't find a thread about boss battles in general, so i made this!

basically, this thread is asking both "what are your favorite boss battles" and "the boss battles that you didn't expect" at the same time, but you can answer only one if you want. it doesn't have to be final bosses, heck, it could be mini-but-pointless boss battles. "unexpected" is meant for bosses that you never saw coming or never knew about....possible spoilers down the road though.... i'll get it started!

    FAVORITE BOSSES:
ganon of "ocarina of time". between the terrifying music, the lose of the master sword, the hulking monster weilding two giant swords, and the fate of the world resting on link's shoulders, i've truely felt that this was the greatest threat i've faced yet.

jack of blades from "fable". i knew from his appearance that he'd be evil,i just wasn't expecting how evil. from the epic chase to prevent the activation of the artifacts, to avenging your family, until the final reincarnation of dragon jack, he was truely the best villian of the series.

    UNEXPECTED BOSSES:
giga bowser, from "super smash brothers: melee". i got melee two years late, and it took me two more to reach "very hard" difficulty. when i defeated the enlarged bowser in story mode, i thought i won. then he lifted back to the platform, lightning struck him, and unlocked his final form.i paused as soon as i could, trying to gather myself up to battle this beast. giga bowser demolished me until my last life, where i went insane.....i miraculously won.

night terror, from "soul calibur 3". a name perfectly fitting for his name. i unlocked his special mission and started the fight.......only it wasn't a fight, it was my funeral.....night terror is a god of death...being highly immune to damage, and unable to be "ring out" ed....i've yet to beat him....

For me, it's Emperor Palpatine in Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy/Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga. It's just the whole idea of Luke and Vader teaming up to taking him down in a surprisingly epic final clash that manages to one-up canon for me as much as I love the film that this level as well as several others are based on. Really took me by surprise when I first played this on my Nintendo Gamecube.

Another favorite of mine is the final battle against N in Pokemon Black/White. Nothing screams epic like having your team who has been with you through thick and thin, plus Reshiram or Zekrom depending on which version you're playing if you so choose, going up against N's pretty powerful team which includes an opposing Legendary Pokemon along with the music score of the battle as you and your Pokemon team are fighting for the fate of the world that's just plain awesome

Too many good boss fights to name, but a recent surprise one was the shopkeeper from Shovel Knight.

The Rajang and Deviljho always scare the crap out of me. Even if you know they are in the map, you never know when they'll pop up. Sometimes while battling one of them the other will pop up in I the most inopportune time.

My most fave boss is probably a tie between Etna and Wily.

I was not expecting Chernabog in Kingdom Hearts. Unfortunately, he seemed to be expecting me.

Tidal Wave in the PS2 Transformers Armada game, fuck me that was a surprise. And a difficult boss battle too.

My favourite boss is Mogera, the huge flying worm thing from Wind Waker. Wonderful music and an impressive spectacle indeed!

    The Great Mighty Poo :D
Not the greatest or most innovative battle, but I laughed so hard it deserves a mention.

Also, Mr. Freeze from Batman Arkham City. Unlike most bosses, you can't just use the same tactic over and over. He forces you to dig deep into your bag of bat-tricks, including things you may not have otherwise tried. Especially on hard mode, where you basically have to use everything you have to bring him down.

I was keeled over laughing as I fought that giant nazi fetus in South Park The Stick of Truth.. Mother of God :lol

Most fun I had fighting a boss in game... I also liked fighting my rival in all the Pokemon games & Devastator in Transformers Devastation but otherwise most boss fights I don't care for.

The spider from twilight princess. Not a personal fave fight itself but beyond memorable at the halfway point for what happens after phase 1.

i agree. that battle was awesome. this counts as unexpected and favorite boss battle for me.

and then there is the battle against Goht from The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. sure it is running in a circle but with the falling rocks, bombs and Goht shooting lightning bolts at you, it gets intense. and the music. perfect.

Bowyer and Culex from Super Mario RPG. Bowyer spoke in a combination of a 1930s gangster movies (nya, see? no one is gonna mess with me, see? nya), and Yoda of Star Wars.

a new party member shows up and when Bowyer gets angry, three button pads fall from the sky and when he fires an arrow, depending which button it hits, you can not use that button. and the music playing for the Smithy gang boss battle really gets to you. but in a good way.

Culex was a complete surprise. i loved the music. it wasn't until years later that i learn that the music was from Final Fantasy 2 (4). first time when i reached Culex, i was destroyed.

i bought the strategy guide and prepared myself and had a better time.

Super Shredder in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 4: Turtles in Time. the music was befitting in this fight. SS was fast moving, shooting fireballs, freezing the turtles and the green attack transformed them back to regular turtles.

the fact that Shredder transformed into Super Shredder was unexpected.

Giant Baby Bowser from Yoshi's Island. first, again, the music was rockin'! GBB can be seen at a distance and you got to hurl a big egg at him.

The Cyborg Tyrannosaur from Turok: Dinosaur Hunter. if you still have the Fusion Cannon, fire both shots at the midsection of the Tyrannosaur and keep moving, as it loses health, it moves faster. the music is great, every time i see the Tyrannosaur in the Jurassic Park movies, this song plays in my head. and as i was playing around with the big head and tiny enemies cheat codes, it is hilarious seeing the T-rex at the size of a turkey and letting yourself get killed to see the Tyrannosaur eat you.

The Eggbot final boss from Sonic 2. great battle music. i had a long battle against it since i had no rings and didn't want to be hit by its claws. i waited until it flew up and come crashing down to attack it.

i'!! add more later, i have A LOT of memories of boss battles in the 28 years of gaming.

so i got a few more here!

    FAVORITE BOSS BATTLES

silver horn in megaman x:command mission because of the events leading to it. you find a reploid (a cowardly one) wearing the armor of STEEL MASSIMO, and it turns out the reploid was being trained by the original, who went missing. after finding the original steel massimo in a torture chamber about to die, he tells the rookie he has to take his place. when you find the boss silverhorn, he notices the new massimo, but then states "it couldn't be that feeble massimo". after taunting and laughing about his demise, the new massimo decks silverhorn, and says "feeble massimo? FEEBLE MASSIMO? YOU SUNNOVA-" and the battle commences.i always let massimo land the last hit....since that battle, he began to get stronger and braver, truely earning the name steel massimo

    UNEXPECTED BOSS BATTLES
the mayor in pokemon colusseum. it still shocks me........

mira (final form) in xenoverse two.....i........just......wow......

Mother Brain, original Metroid. First time I ever swore in front of my parents was after beating her and yelling "kicked her ass!"

i figured i could bump this up since plenty of games came out by november. i also wanted to post two thats been avoiding me this whole time.....

METAL MARIO of super smash bros 64: i still remember how terrified of him i was as a kid. i never played smash or mario 64, so i had no idea what too expect. no matter how hard i hit him, he'd just start walking towards me. i couldn't figure anything out....it took about a week to learn that gravity is his greatest enemy...then i thought it was over......but it wasn't......it never will.....i'll always hear him....walking while i play this song.....

MASTER HAND: the guy behind it all....while his simple appearance is nonethreatening, his unique abilities and having a percentage bar really put me on edge. i managed to get a victory the third time around.....his later appearances also surprise me, between the introduction of crazy hand, master core and all the new abilities inbetween, he's most certainly one of the best crossover bosses of all time.....

    as a standalone favorite:

CECIL THE DRAGON of serious sam 2. while gathering relics to defeat the evil of mental, you arrive in a world similar to a fairy tail. you end up going on a mission to save the princess......

at least until you find the dragon that took her. "PLEASE TAKE HER BACK!" *sam looks over to see hidious troll lady* "NO WAY MAN, YOU KEEP HER!"....thus the battle to see who doesn't keep her proceeds. unlike the other bosses, no standard weapon does the slightest damage, so you have to find harpoons and jump abilities to defeat cecil while he flies around the stage....

when all said and done, he's about to jump off the cliff to end it all..., so sam says he'll take her if he gets the part he needs. cecil agrees and this ends the chapter....

Zero, from Mega Man X2 if you don't save all his parts leading up to the last stage. That battle, with the intensity/speed and the Zero theme playing behind it, was highly memorable.

Kafka from Final Fantasy VI was great as well, the whole battle leading up to the final tier, the music, the attacks completely unique to the boss... that game is my favorite FF out of them all.

Chrono Trigger also had a great end boss, they built it up well throughout and the quirky twist to finishing the final fight was unexpected.

Last but not least, though it might be cliche on these forums, Trypticon from WfC was done very well. The build-up across a couple chapters and the awesome orbital drop sequence made it a good one.

Yep I would go with that for unexpected!

Favourite boss fights are mostly from Dark Souls, the top ones being the Abyss Watchers, Artorias and The Nameless King. Pretty much all of the bosses in Metal Gear Rising were awesome as well.

Tabu on the hardest difficulty in Smash Bros Brawl is also a favourite.

Cortex at the end of Crash Bandicoot Warped. His theme was awesome, and that game was really something I had been in the long haul for, so I was really pumped to defeat Cortex at last.

Another favorite is zombie George Romero in Black Ops Zombies. I mean, it's freaking George Romero.

I knew he was coming at some point but I was taken by surprise when he actually did show up. One hell of a boss, too, doing battle with Satan himself, the king of Disney nightmare fuel. The volcano erupting, "Night on Bald Mountain" playing (though the latter arrangement that cropped up in Dream Drop Distance and 1.5 was light years better). And he was a great sign of the end of the endgame approaching. As a kid a game with Kingdom Hearts level of plot blew my mind so I was legitimately intimidated by all the horrors of that game, and Chernabog was just.. man. So yeah he also qualifies as one of my favorite bosses as well as unexpected bosses.
