When Hot Rod was announced for TLK I was happy. My favourite character in the live action movies. I love his robot mode and his alt mode. But then we learn he's going to have a French accent. I will admit I was like "Oh. Ok". But then I started to think about it more and I have hope that he's going to be a really good character, and not just a stereotype. They said he's not French, he just likes the accent. To me this is saying he's not going to be portrayed in the same way that Drift's portrayed. Who you can actually say is Japanese.

So do you think the same, or do you think he will just be a stereotype of a Frenchman, complete with an Accordion that is his weapon of doom.

I kind of want him to be like Gambit. Like a lovable rogue.

 

Well it was already said that he was a slightly arrogant, brash protector and a brother-in-arms with Bumblebee, so it seems like we already have a part of his personality known.

I actually would laugh my butt off if he was a Guy Le Douche-type weirdo, although I don't think that would go over that well with a lot of fans. Still Hot Rod should be MOST EXTREME, and Guy Le Douche is MOST EXTREME! So yeah!

 

They should hire Jason statham to do a French accent and a few lines of French....that'd do.

 

Personality wise I think he's going to be pretty much the classic Hot Rod we know him to be according to the bio he has a months ago.

 

Foolhardy, disobedient, egotistical, yet heroic.

Y'know, Hot Rod. The name basically says it all. Turbo-revvin' young punk.

 

Yeah you guys pretty much covered it. Arrogant, cocky but ultimately heroic with a spark of gold!

French accent =/=French speaking.

As for your question, not in the slightest, just like British Ironhide didn't bother me. If Hot Rod sounds or acts in a bad way, it'll be because of his writing and performance, not his accent.

 

You see British ironhide bothered me! And I'm British haha! I suppose I'm old fashioned in that the French were never the winners nor the enthusiastic spirit of people they were normally sweet talkers then the moaners if they never got their way, it just doesn't fit with the hot rod of old....unless that's a deliberate choice by everyone after the fallout of him becoming rodimus?

 

I keep having this nagging feeling that he may also be a bit of a flirt. No a complete first but like a few moments here and there. Though it wouldn't be a bad thing, it does seem to align nicely with his personality type. It'll just have to all come down to execution. Of course there's also the chance I'm completely wrong as well since this is only based off a feeling I had. Only time will tell.

 

I don't really care for him, I have no expectations.

 

Well, we've had all sorts of accents in the films: British Jetfire, Scottish Roadbuster, Cockney Leadfoot, Tokyo Drift, Aussie Crosshairs. A French accent should be okay, as long as it's done well; it's very difficult to pull off, as Ewan McGregor (Lumiere in Beauty and the Beast) showed.

Anyway, I hope Hot Rod will be an arrogant but capable French character. He can't be too comical or stereotypical, like a Maurice Chevalier-Pepe le Pew romance-obsessed character.

 

But would he really be a French character if he's only mimicking the accent because he liked the sound of it?

 

Right now, the only actor I can think about with a French accent (Even though he's not French) is Ewan Mcgregor.

 

Jean Dujardin is a French actor who was rumored to be a part of TF5.

At first I was excited, but I think my excitment has dissapeared kind of, because I wanted Hot Rod to be Red, but I'm fine with his black and orange colour scheme, I also wanted him to have a voice like Sideswipe in RID but more deaper and lastly I'm happy with his BIO because it sounds like the original Hot Rod anyway.

 

I'm in the same boat. Never liked Hot Rod so they could really do anything to his character and I wouldn't care lol

 

Well not that I hate him, but wether he has a french or a spannish accent, that's irrelevant to me. But if he indeed has a french accent that Mark Ryan must not be his voice actor, so who is he voicing then, Onslaught, one of the Creators, I hope not Bumblebee.
