... buy the 3D Blu-ray. I didn't have a 3DTV when I started buying 3D Blu-rays, but I knew that sooner or later I would. While it wouldn't be the strongest 3D presentation I've seen, it certainly enhanced the experience tremendously. Coupled with Imax and the kaleidoscopic visual effects it was highly impressive on multiple fronts.
I don't have a 3D TV, and don't plan to get one. There's little point when most movies don't utilize the 3D properly.
Asian Actors in Comic Book Films Respond to ‘Doctor Strange’ Whitewashing Controversy Some Asian visibility groups, notably the Media Action Network for Asian Americans (MANAA), have rejected these rationalizations, arguing that an Asian woman could have been cast instead of the British actress. MANAA’s former president Guy Aoki noted, “whitewashing” of Asian comic book characters has happened before, citing The Mandarin (Guy Pearce) in “Iron Man” and Talia al Ghul (Marion Cotillard) in “The Dark Knight Rises” as examples. Kelly Hu has been fortunate to be cast in roles true to their source material, including Japanese cyborg Lady Deathstrike in “X2” and supervillain China White on “Arrow.” “I think it’s a shame,” the Chinese-American actress said of “whitewashing.” “From what I’ve been told and what I’ve read, it’s because [studio executives] think that Asian actors and actresses don’t pull in the numbers — that people aren’t going to pay to see Asians on screen. With all these borders opening up and movies going global these days, Asians make up a huge part of the population in the world, and I hope that will start reflecting in Hollywood." Lewis Tan, who stars as villain Zhou Cheng in the upcoming Netflix series “Iron Fist,” responded, “I’m not the biggest fan of that casting choice. I can see why they wanted to switch it up. Producers, studios, directors, writers — there’s a lot of voices. I think that an Asian woman would’ve been fantastic cast in that. They said she would be too much of a ‘Dragon Lady’ or too stereotypical, but I disagree.” Tan was considered for the role of Iron Fist in the Netflix series. Well, I think it's nice that some Asian actors do not feel offended by their own stereotypes. But I think Swinton was a wonderfully enigmatic performance as the Ancient One.
Dr strange made $84,989,000 in America this weekend. Weekend Box Office Results for November 4-6, 2016 - Box Office Mojo
The plot might have been predictable but I think this is a in the top half of mcu movies. I wish I could say more but it's all of the usual marvel positive and negative points. Actions is great, villain could be a bit better. I have 2 issues one being that it's pretty much iron man story arc with magic over technology. Another is Spoiler dormammu felt a bit disappointing in his appearance. It's reminded me a bit of galactus in ff2. I wanted to see the burning head demon. We got a demon but no flames. It might sound nitpicky but I was disappointed. [spoiler/]
Ah okay. I can see it being part of the montage of Wong mustering troops to go to Hong Kong, but I don't remember it specifically. It could easily have been cut.
Saw the film today. Loved it. While this is a Superhero origin film, it’s not that different from any other. I mean, these films do help to set up the hero getting his powers, but it also shows us what could happen if somebody else came into contact with these same powers. Plus, these types of films can open the doors to other similar, but different powered enemies in the future. Stan Lee’s cameo was hilarious. On the visual effects, if they don’t get an Oscar (or even a nomination), then the Academy clearly doesn’t know good movie making. Looking through some stuff, I have some opinions that need to be weighed on later. One thing I will say is that introducing Dormammu here does help set him up for potential future Doctor Strange films.
Spoiler I too thought it was Rhodey and I think other people in the theater did too. But I am pretty sure Rhodey is older than 35 and this part was still during the origin part of his story which would be before civil War. So the logical thing would be the Hammer tech stuff
Spoiler But this movie takes place after the Chitauri invasion of New York (evident in both the presence of Avengers Tower and the mention of the team by name during the scene with the Eye). So while I suppose this could have taken place before the Avengers moved to the Compound, it definitely takes place after Iron Man 2. What book was he reading? I couldn't keep up. I think it would have been just a little too silly to jump in with Dormammu in comic form for this movie (and I say that as someone who thinks that Galactus definitely would have been purple if Rise of the Silver Surfer was part of the MCU).
Agreed. Just saw it last night (8/10 btw) and it's the first movie since Avatar where IMAX *and* 3D were truly essential for viewing. Absolutely incredible.
Yeah, I was going to say that Avatar was the last movie to really utilize 3D this well. I've seen other 3D movies, where you almost forget you bought the 3D ticket, because most of the scenes, save for the big action-y bits, are the standard 2D. But every single scene in Doctor Strange had 3D elements. I guess I'd also give the movie itself a 7 or 8 out of 10.
