I don't have the Madman version but based on comparisons pics I've seen, my quick impression is that the Madman version oversaturated some colors to make it pop more but Shout's version looks more accurate to me.

If anyone else needs a digital code they are welcome to mine, just PM me. I'd rather some one get to use it as I know I'll just watch the blu-ray version.

It'd be great if I could stroll into a store and buy it. All I've found so far is the DVD at Walmart. Haven't tried my luckids at Best Buy yet.

I thought so too until I made a direct comparison. Turns out the darker black levels on the Madman version just make the colors seem more saturated because they're so much brighter than the black level. If you compare the colors side-by-side with the Shout! Factory release, you can see that they're actually more washed out. Funny how our eyes play tricks on us!

Just go to their website and in the product description page check out the inventory at your local BB.

Hey you're very welcome. It was just going to sit there for me. Glad another board member can get some enjoyment out of it.

I noticed that a bit too but especially without the side by side comparison, I will say this version looks more than good enough to me. I'm sure it must be better straight off the bluray but my tv is dialed in pretty nicely and it's better than I ever remember seeing the movie anywhere else so I'm happy!

You and all the others who offered this are gentleman for helping out when you didn't need to. This is a great community!

Glad someone could get use out of the code, I make my own backups so I would never have any need for it

I think he meant that the madman colors are actually more washed out, they just don't appear that way due to the deeper blacks.

Who ever mastered this fucked up the gamma royally. What a shame. mines going back, will stick with the madmen release. Annoying because the image is cleaner for sure but something as simple as gamma can ruin the image for the entire movie

Well it was 4 Autobots vs an entire army. Would only have ever ended one way unless they turned the 80s hero dial to maximum.

Yeah, I was quite surprised. I much prefer the older Madman release.

As you can see, Madman's widescreen image has a little less cropping along the bottom, too. :thumbs2:
I'm happy to have done so, but I'm shocked nobody else bothered to.

Also, since this is the first time we've had an HD transfer in fullscreen, let's compare framing, colors and light levels to some of the earlier DVD releases:

Clearly, Shout! Factory has the best-looking fullscreen transfer... but Madman's widescreen transfer is still superior. :locked2:

^ That's a cool comparison. I have both the Madman and the Shout! versions. I do think I like the colors in the Madman version better, I just wish they could have cleaned up all the specs and dirt better. It gets distracting in a few scenes.

When I watch it from now on, I'll probably just go for the Madman Bluray or the 20th Anniversary DVD.

I got in the mail months back on my birthday and I kinda scanned through it and watched some extras.

Today I sat down and finall watched the whole movie in 4:3 in HD like I always wanted.

Even though I watch this movie ever year or two, and is probably the single movie I’ve seen more than any other, every time I watch it, it instantly transports me back to that air conditioned movie theater in August 1986 when I was eight years old, seeing this with my two brothers.

The shuttle scene is so brutal, shocking, and ruthless. It was especially sad to me cause moments ago, Ironhide, a character we all know and love, was so confident and full of optimism and swagger about how he was gonna take down the Decepticreeps. Only to end up crawling on his belly moaning “nooooo” before getting executed with a killshot to the head. And I knew from that scene on that NOBODY was safe and this was NOT the daily TV show I’d been loving for 2 years. This is something so much more, so much bigger, so ADULT.

I was terrified but THRILLED at the same time.

I remember seeing Soundwave launch his cassettes and a strange purple bat came out. Who the hell was that? New cassettes!! Awesome! And Blaster has cassettes too? What??

I sat in butt-clenched terror. I didn’t want my favorites (including Wheeljack) to die. I left the theater thinking he was safe but I must have blinked, cause I got to be horrified all over again when the movie came out on VHS and I got to see his lifeless corpse.

Optimus’s death really didn’t affect me cause I knew it was coming from spoilerific TV promos and toy commercials. But goddamn, that fight scene was just insane to witness. The cracks on their bodies and faces…the fluids running down Megatron’s face. This shit was serious. I knew they could never show it on TV. “It’s over Prime” and Megatron is leaking vital fluids out of his cracked and damaged face. That image is the Movie in a nutshell to me. LOVE IT.

I remember laughing seeing Rumble run along with the fusion cannon in the next scene. And then Mesgatron’s transformation sequence was equally mindblowing…the revelation that “oh holy shit that new character Galvatron I saw commercials for….IS Megatron!! Not just replacing him!! He’s HIM!”

And the brutal murder of Starscream that turned him into ASH. I was hooked. Spike said “Shit” and we couldn’t believe what we’d just heard!! And Magnus said damn it!! And he DIED! They killed a brand new character too! (What a copout to fix him a few minutes later, I thought, but felt good for my brother cause he wanted the toy for his birthday.) But holy cow, Dare to be Stupid by Weird Al!!

Admittedly, the next parts were just filler for me until they get to Unicron. But then you get that insane transformation, more destruction, more Autobots (nameless) melted to a gory death in a smelting pit.

And then it happened…Rodimus Prime. Now a lot of kids said they hated him, resented him, just wanted Optimus back…I LOVED him. I was just the kind of sucker 8 year old Hasbro had in mind to make me want to abandon all my old toys and demand all the new ones. It worked on me and they had me hook line and sinker!

What a joy to be able to relive this movie anytime I want in HD in my preferred aspect ratio! This is the EIGHTH TIME I’ve bought this movie now!! Can I please stop? Well I thought the 20th DVD was the last one I’d ever need. I was wrong. I’m sure in 10 years I’ll need to upgrade again.

And one last thing for the record…I love the cover. I got the steelbox and it’s a great package. Sure, the Japanese poster or original poster would have been cool, but the important thing to me is preserving that pink and orange logo, the blue background, so it feels like the original but offers something new. I for one really like it and think all the backlash was rather silly.

If anyone from Shout Factory is still reading this thread…thumbs up guys! I loved it!! Great job and THANK YOU!
