It has to be the best version I've seen. Very crisp, colors pop out, you can see so many small details.
I have watched this movie so many time it is burnt into my mind, but watching this new version, I saw things I never saw or noticed before!
It is well worth the $12.99!

I'm pretty sure this is an animation error. I went to check it out again, to see if it was there after Prime dropped the matrix, his chest was still open, but his matrix chamber was closed.

Oh I'm confident that it's an error in terms of the movie. It's just that I seem to recall some Beast Wars related fiction introducing the idea that there are actually two Matrix-like objects in Prime's chest. I'm curious whether that was based on the animation error, or just a coincidence.

Turns out someone on the blu-ray.com forums beat me to taking same-frame comparison screenshots of the US and UK/AUS Blu-Rays. I don't want to steal their images, and it's not a competing Transformers forum. Would it be kosher to link to their post?

    Hi,

Can any of you please tell me if the 30th Anniversary Blu-ray has English subtitles or closed-captioning?

OK... so these are 25 screens each from the two Blu-Rays I own. The timing isn't the same, so they're not the same frames for both movies. However, you can see that the Madman version does have slightly darker blacks and whiter whites... however you can see that it also often has a weird green, yellow, or pink tint to it.

At this link, Dion has provided some actual direct comparisons:
Blu-ray Forum - View Single Post - The Transformers: The Movie (1986) (30th Anniversary Edition) - Shout! Factory

Again you can see that the UK/AUS transfer has lower black levels and higher contrast. However, if you look at Hot Rod, you can see it's actually the UK/AUS version where the colors are washed out, not the US version.

If anyone is interested, I can provide a few pics of the sort of dirt and damage that's present in the Madman release but not the Shout! Factory one.

I shelled out for the Steelbook and my 6 year old, wife, and I watched it the other night. He was just getting into the CW stuff before he watched so it was cool to see him relate the toys to the characters as well as learning about newer toons. He loved the movie and watched it again with me on our iPad. He loved Arcee before the movie, but told me he wanted a toy Hot Rod after lol. I did order a TR Blurr and MP Hot Rod today for him and I :)

so my blu ray TFTM came in and i watched it and compared some scenes to the 20th anniversary dvd version, the blu ray looks soo much better than the dvd, the scenes i compared to on dvd looked dark and not clear. The same scenes on the blu ray looked cleaner and clear and the colors were more natural. Blu Ray for the win!:rock

The Blu Ray transfer is so incredibly worth it. The only issue I have is not a fault of the Blu Ray, but a blurry pan happens when Hot Rod is introduced. It's subtle and you never noticed it was there on the DVD but you do on the Blu Ray. I'm still keeping all of my copies but the Blu Ray version is the one I will watch now!

They can't fix animation error that were always there.....like Primes antenna color etc....they can clean up the picture, but aren't gonna mess with actual cel color problems....and yes, every error you mentioned has been there since day one. There is no "Wrong version" there is only one version....now, there can be different source prints, but they too will have the same cel coloring errors.

No problem! But I'll refer you here.
    In particular, this part:

To create enough frames so that 60Hz video can be displayed on 120 and 240Hz displays, often a process of frame interpolation is used. With video-based sources, this results in a far better image. With film-based sources, the result is often quite undesirable, creating an ultra-smooth effect derisively called the "Soap-opera effect" where all movies have the aesthetic of a soap opera. Most film buffs adamantly dislike this effect. Others don't mind it.

Earlier in the article, it talks about how most content is either 60 fields or frames per second for tv and 24 frames per second for films and all are broadcast to your tv at 60 hz. None of that matches the 120 hz setting that some tvs offer. It's just a marketing gimmick that makes most stuff not look very good, or to be more pc, at least not look as it was intended to. Someday, if high frame rate films at 120 frames per second become more prevalent, it may be of use but otherwise, not so much.

Thank you very much....my TV calls it something else, but yeah, now I understand....that setting that makes everything look like videotape...I only ever flip it on as a diverting novelty...but I'm glad you explined the tech of it. They always use it at stores to make the picture more "clear" but it's not at all good....

There is a 46 minute long documentary with many of the cast and crew. I haven't watched all of it but it has been great so far.
