Actually, upon looking closer, the moth section looks pretty cool. It's got some very anthropomorphic features to it. Fix the eyes though. Too big and dopey for a bad ass like hot rod

I understand and accept that movie Transformers 9 times out of 10 look nothing like their G1 counterparts and that is fine. Hot Rod doesn't need his traditional spoiler (the design I think looks ok for a movie bot) but for a bot that has been over the top like him, I wish they would have at least given him a flashier color scheme even if its not the traditional red, yellow, orange with flames. Right now, he looks more like a Stunticon.

A better question would be why would people be excited about Bay releasing another familiar name?

I don't think anyone was "expecting" anything nor are they even surprised that Bay and company has fcuked up yet another character.

It doesn't matter that Hasbro was careless with names and characters for 20 years. What matters is the carelessness of them now at a time when Disney has raised the standards for pop culture film tremendously. Hell, even Warner can't be accused of cheap nameslaps or anything like that.

Whoever mentioned Masters of the Universe and Mario Bros is correct. Transformers is treated as a high budget but dirt worst B movie garbage. And Hasbro wants to somehow make a universe out of that :lol

And boom, we have a winner. From Deadend to an acceptable Hotrod.

Believe me if I see this on twitter I will retweet.

The coloring & mods are a good effort and all, but respectfully, it doesn't save that shit design at all. As long as he still looks like a faceless skeletal system made up of metal bars & wires, no re-color in the world will make it look good. No different than how proper color mods made to Ironhide, Jazz, Starscream, etc. ever helped either. These bionicle designs just can't be saved that way.

No, I agree. The head looks really weird no matter how I colored it. I finally just gave up. I will say that some of those skeleton structures wouldn't look so bad if they just used a base color to bring some detail out so that it's not just a thousand grey gears mushed together. I think a good example is Hot Rod's stomach area. I was working from a low-res image so there was only so much I could do. But I think his mid section would look better with a base color like I used, instead of just grey on top of grey.

A lot of these base designs aren't horrible. They just lack two things: (1) A visually distinctive silhouette that makes them instantly recognizable in a scene. [Hot Rod's spoiler would help solve that] and (2) base colors that pull out small details while also helping individual characters stand out from each other.

That design is so dull it actually makes me a little sad. Entirely ignoring whether it's recognisable as Hot Rod, it isn't a very appealing robot at all. It isn't weird and alien, it isn't colourful and fun, it isn't elegant in its simplicity. It looks like the knockoff drone version of a transformer.

This movies are nothing, that I know from my childhood. Marvel keep their movie characters old school enough to be recognizable. Those bots in the movies just look like moving piles of trash.

The new Prime 1 Studio`s G1 Optimus statue is the perfect example, of how TF could be modernized for movies but still be G1 enough .

Hot Rod is a "brother in arms of Bumblebee"? Bullshit. The design looks nothing like Hot Rod at all, and comes off as a poorly made design.
Hopefully this means Optimus Prime will die for once, and Hot Rod will become Rodimus Prime (and actually looking like the character).

My issue isn't that it's "not geewun enough" but just that it's a terribly bland and generic design period. Does EVERY robot have to have the car hood/chest transformation? Does his head design have to have googly eyes? Why is his entire backside just exposed mechanical greeble? He looks like a transformer that's been skinned. There's no sense of character or real creative design going on, IMO. It's just a human shaped silhouette with machine parts haphazardly glued on at random.

Even movie Crosshairs has more character and a more interesting silhouette going on his design. But this is just bland, let alone not even remotely indicative of the Hot Rod character. I mean, he's got tiiiiiny hints of red here and there. But that's literally it. If that even counts.

Eh, i'd just wait if the sequel will give him a improved design. And it's kinda bland cuz' basically Hot Rod is a full-blown bumblebee expy. It's kinda awkward really. I mean, would giving him a nother head make him less generic? or add to his generic look?

Alright guys, here's the deal. After much observation and deliberation, the last chunk of this thread has been purged as it was getting heated and off-topic. This thread will have the magnifying lens on it from this point on. Insults, digs at each other, rudeness, and overly snarky/smarmy posts etc. are not going to be tolerated, as stated in the forum rules:

    1. No Insults, Trolling, Flaming, Name Calling, Harassing, Etc.
We will not tolerate insults, excessive profanity or throwing a topic off course. Use of racial, bigoted, sexist, or discriminatory terms or phrases is not accepted. Posts intended solely to antagonize others are not accepted. Keep topics/posts where they belong. Generally, “play nice”.

    13. No Disruptive Posting or Flamebaiting
Do not purposely post anything which will cause another member (or members) to react negatively. This is subjective. The TFW2005 staff will evaluate the trend of posts made by those consistently being reported or those that are repeatedly involved with arguments on the site. If their overall method or content of posting leads to staff attention repeatedly, we reserve the right to warn, infract and/or ban accordingly.

If you see a post you think is stirring up trouble, report it, place the user on ignore, and move on. Responding in kind will only get you added to the list of potential users in trouble. If you're about to post something that you think has even the slightest chance of landing you in trouble... don't. :)

    Thanks!

Am I worn out with the movies? Not yet, but getting there.
The toys for the movies? Closer than the films themselves.
The designs? No. I like seeing what they can do with them.

I get that a large number of people want G1, that same group wants cartoonish feel in these movies, so they feel like it's their Transformers again.

Problem is, it's not. These movies were, are still, and will continue to be a reboot in a brand new universe.

These are not your G1 Transformers, they will not have G1 designs, they will not be the same or do the same things. That's all there is to it.

If you wish to support the movies, great. Go and see 'em, buy the toys, have a good time.

If you don't, that's fine too. Don't see 'em, don't buy the toys, have a good time.

The world has moved on and Transformers with it. G1 still exists in the form of comics, cartoons and figures. This movie and it's universe is one storyline among many and with it, it's own style.

Just because you don't agree with it or like it doesn't mean it's wrong. For some it's not Hot Rod because it's not G1 enough or doesn't have enough "Hot Roddedness", for others this is a killer cool Hot Rod.

Instead of going at each other over a movie design, why not recognize you're two sides of the same coin and fellow fans? You like what you like, they'll like what they like and everyone lives peacefully.

These are movies, silly overblown popcorn movies, that sell toys.
    Much like the G1 cartoon.

We're all in the same big boat and need to start paddling together, otherwise we're going to be adrift, lost at sea because of ridiculous infighting.

Toys, cartoons, movies, none of these will affect you personally.

Got to get over it, people.

I dunno. I think it's kinda been that way since 2007. Maybe even earlier. People aren't going to change just because someone suggests it. They only change if and when they feel the need to. As for me, I don't really care much about the design. Well, I take it back, the only thing I don't like is the face :lol  I mean, like others have said, it looks generic. Hot Rod looks more like a cannon fodder character. Kinda like the red shirt meme in Star Trek. Meh....

Get what you're trying to say. But it's not just about G1. Also it's not wrong (imo) to want something better.

I agree. I'm fine with a drastic departure from G1 as long as the design is good. This Hot Rod doesn't really fit that bill in my opinion; honestly, the big chunk of car on his chest and the overabundance of vague mechanical parts makes it hard for me to believe it's an official design.

I think Hasbro is letting the studios have a bit too much creative freedom. IF you look at the Marvel and other super hero movies, they stick very closely to the original material, since if they don't people will be very upset and the movie will fail (imagine captain america having a rectangular shaped shield or a design where the suit is not blue).

They have also been cheating a bit too much on the robot designs and admitting that when they transform they pull parts out of thin air and resize them. Then the robots all look too generic. Well placed non shrunken kibble would make these designs look great in my opinion.

The trilogy prime is much better for example than AOE prime. AOE prime would never be able to transform into anything while the first trilogy prime uses cheating too he actually has all the truck kibble on his form. Most of these designs don't look like they turn into anything (does AOE prime even have one truck wheel on his CGI design?)
