This isn't an attack on the Transformers films. They are what they are. Five movies in, I feel it's pointless for me to complain about them anymore. So... I've been out of the loop on all things Transformers-related for a while now. The announcement of The Last Knight and all the little scraps of news that's followed has renewed my interest a little. I haven't been following things too closely, but I'm noticing a lot of comments in the news threads here along the lines of "it looks like they're actually putting some thought into this one"; "they're finally getting it right". I don't recall many people being this optimistic about Age of Extinction. To me The Last Knight just looks like more of the same, but with some of the original cast - both humans and Transformers - returning. Which is fine. These movies aren't made for me and that's okay. So if this applies to you, I want to know why you think The Last Knight will be different from or improve on the previous four films. Why are you more optimistic about this movie than the last few?
Well, for me, thank the Lord Jesus Ehren Kruger is off the franchise for good! Now I wanna clarify, I don't hate Ehren Kruger like its personal - I've seen interviews vids on YouTube, seems quite pleasant - but Paramount? Look, he may be "knowledgeable about Transformers", but it doesn't mean HE'S THE RIGHT GUY. What an idiot decision which - thanks to the writers room - they're making amends for. Ehren Kruger - TF fan himself, but terrible writing. So yeah. My main reason is The Writer's Room. That does not feature Kruger nor Kurtzman and "9/11 Truther" Orci. ... Yeah. I went there.
Personally, I love EVERYTHING that Orci & Kurtzman AND Kruger brought to the table. Great fucking movies and they were BRILLIANTLY written! But I think it's clear that Michael Bay is really the captain of the ship here. There's a reason that all the movies are consistently so in line with one another despite the revolving door or writers, after all. That said, yeah. The writer's room. And of course I'm a HUGE fan of the medieval/knighthood theme. Cannot say enough how excited I am that they're doubling down on it so hard. But I wouldn't really say I'm MORE excited about the next movie than I was for any of the previous installments. Pretty much exactly AS excited would be more accurate. I think most of the people you mentioned having seen expressing positivity in the News threads are really just excited to see fan-favorite characters like Barricade, Lennox, and Epps being brought back into the fold.
I really don't expect it to be much different, save for somewhat tidier writing (less extraneous human characters, for instance). There'll be plenty of foreshadowing for future sequels this time around, given the cinematic universe they want to create. Of course, if the movie isn't successful for whatever reason (as unlikely as that may seem), then any foreshadowing will be for naught. Michael Bay is at the helm, and I will confess, I like pretty much all his movies except Pearl Harbour, so if The Last Knight is anything like the previous ones in the franchise I'll be pleased.
I'm %100 it will not be different. It's the same people who run the ship. They had a chance to do something totally different and fresh with TF4 but they fucked it up. So I'm just here for the designs from now on.
While I am eager to see how his one turns out. I have to agree with the Red. What really killed TF4 for me was a few things. The whole Tessa and her boyfriend thing was just stupid. The movie IMO wild have been better off without them two. I personally thought most of the TF designs were garbage. I did not like the pixilated transformations of th KSI bots. The story behind KSI and what it was doing was ok but the new TFs were bad. Hated that they just threw a second head on a shockwave clone and threw it in the movie and or used a design of Josh Nizzis (the big silver robot) from his how to make your own TF DVD art program lmao! To me those 2 designs were just lazy. The TFs with each movie just look way more human and its pulling away from what they should be. Giant ALIEN ROBOTS, not Giant human looking robots. Bees and OPs DOTM designs were the best IMO. Bees early vintage Camaro robot mode in AOE was far superior than his new look IMO. I hated that there really was no Cons at all in AOE even tho they marketed the hell out of there being Cons. Shit, IMO lockdown was probably the best part of AOE and he wasn't even a Con like they made him in the toy lines lol. The Dinobots looked ok but again, Bay dropped the ball on them. They were only hype train material and had one rampage scene in the movie. Shit, get OP mad enough and he could have did that rampage all on his own lmao! He's did it in DOTM all by himself lol. Even Galvatron was less than desirable and just didn't do much for the movie. I really still feel like th first movie and DOTM (story wise) were the best and I feel the first movie and ROTF had much better TF designs and originality to them. And I honestly believe that if hey would have waited and not rushed the script of ROTM with the writers strike, that it could have honestly been one of th best TFs movies to date instead of toward the bottom. Had some of the best set pieces and action, had the best TF fight scene with OP in the woods against the 3 Cons, the story while all over the place really had a lot of good points. They just fucked that movie up with bad editing in a lot of places and not enough editing in others. And I don't care, the twins were awesome because they were different. I think Bay dropped the ball in DOTM when he fell to the crying of a few and took the twins out of the movie. I think they should have stayed and died in that movie like in the book. That scene would have been epic in the movie.
I really don't think all the films are as similar as people make them out to be, but I won't get into that. I think there are a few good signs for this film. There's the writers room, which could lead to better scripts. Hasbro has more control, which means the writers/Bay/Spielberg/Paramount might not be able to do what they want. Hasbro will want to better advertise toys, including Decepticons. We have seen a mismatched group of distinct vehicles bearing 'Con insignias, so we might be getting more memorable villains. Plus, Hasbro will want to aim the film towards kids, like TF is meant to be, and the casting of a 14 year old as one of the leads suggests they're will. However, this is all speculation, and I'm not one to be optimistic. I think most people are just excited that we're getting so many looks at the TF CGI designs so early. That itself does indicate that they're trying to gain the fans' interest, but whether the film will reflect this, or just the advertising, can't be known.
The writing might be more in line with something Hasbro will like, for the reasons stated above, but I don't think that means it will be "different" from our perspective. Which is OK.
I feel that this one will have more decent writing and execution. While keeping the aesthetic of the previous films. Hasbro definitely seems more confident this time around.
Different how? I mean what do you envision in this movie that hasn't been in the past four? Yes, there are new writers on board, yet there's no gurantee that we'll get a high quality film if that's what you hope for. Bay's still sailing the ship and has the final say, the writers room just got him more canons to play with, so anything that's dumb stupid humor, dull interaction or bigger action could in fact be as insouciant as we've already seen or moreso. I've very low expections about any thoroughgoing changes that come with passion to the fans, but hey the series could very well be positioned in a better light this fifth time.
I especially like the part where armchair critics dressing down professional writers pull words like "thoroughgoing" out of their ass to do so, lol. But srsly...it's obviously a winning formula. I'm not really sure why anyone would even WANT to fix what isn't broken, but there really DOES seem to be the sense of an EXTRA hearty dose of impending awesomeness here. OMFG I AM EXCITE. XD
I think that if Moner's character (have we gotten her character name yet?) helms a lead role for the film, it could bode well. Sexual jokes would probably be toned down some, and I can see the duo of her and Sqweeks appealing heavily to the younger masses. The return of characters also hints that there will be an atmosphere of familiarity and explore potential initially lost on such characters. This will also be the first time the full cast of Autobots from a previous installment will make an appearance, and given their established personalities in the last, people will be very glad to see them again. As many others have stated, TF4 left a lot to be had. So many characters like the Dinobots and Galvatron were underrepresented. The plot of runaways could have done way better without Tessa or Shane present. I wish so badly things like Leadfoot's car mode, the trailer dancing scene, or potentially the Chevy Sonic RS robot would have made the cut. I'm definitely aboard this train much more for the ideas and speculation, but I'm curious to see where it all leads
I'm sure you know that TLK has great writers writing the story right? As long as the execution is good, the movie will be good. Unfortunately I have to agree with you though, because I'm 99% sure that Bay will still be Bay and try to add unnecessary humor and scenes that should not be in the movie. But as long as they make sure the editing is good and no unnecessary humor or scenes, this could potentially be on par with the first Transformers movie. (2007)
I think the fact that it has different writers this time around and not only that but the writers here also did Iron Man so if anything that might end up making the movie pretty good.
