Should be closer to $20. Without looking now, I can tell you that I got the first five off amazon for between $15-$17 each. And they are huge. Not the page size (although decent), but in page count. They are like 2 or 3 typical manga volumes thick. So the entire original series of 23 books is collected into 12 beautiful hardcovers, the same presentation as the deluxe Japanese release. Hardcover, glossy paper, all the originally colored pages (maybe 10-12 pages per book) still in full painted color, with interviews and articles at the back of the books. I would agree that $30 would give me pause, but anything under $25, I would consider a value for these books.
Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin, Vol. 1- Activation: Yoshikazu Yasuhiko, Melissa Tanaka, Yoshiyuki Tomino, Hajime Yatate: 9781935654872: Amazon.com: Books $24 for Volume 1. Except for like 2 and 3 on Amazon, all of the remaining volume run around $26 there. B&N wants $30 each.
are we talking about how Toonami's Blood Orphan promo is a love letter to the old Gundam Wing promo yet? Cuz its kinda glorious <3 <3 <3 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Wjh8uC5McQ Just wish they woulda got Peter Cullen for it [GW one for comparison's sake (man those old Toonami promos were awesome) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WVcCB4fze94 ]
I know it's just hyperbole for the sake of creating a greater sense of scale, but I can't help but roll my eyes when they say the galaxy is troubled.
Haha, yeah. These new promos definitely reminded me of the older ones. However, does anyone else feel that JYB was miscast as Orga?
Eh, with Gundam the dubbing cast has usually been hit for me. Here everyone (with the exception of Orga) sounds as I would've imagined them to.
Psycho Pass, Ghost in the Shell SAC, Big O, Cowboy Bebop, Attack on Titan, One Piece, Dragon Ball Kai, Tiger & Bunny, Fullmetal Alchemist, and Hellsing say otherwise.
Criticizing VAs is a hair trigger issue I know, but all the more reason to just friggin' ignore the fact that the dubs even exist as far as I'm concerned.
Criticizing dub VA's has never been the problem. It's the whole "sub is superior all of the time" attitude. It's like being one of those guys who can't accept anything past G1 as "real transformers." There's really nothing good about that sort of mentality. Seriously, try watching the dubs of Cowboy Beebop and Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex sometime. They're pretty amazing.
Based on what? I agree it's a great dub. Probably the best dub any Gundam project has ever gotten. But I don't see where it's better than the original voice track. I could see making a case for "just as good". But "far and away superior"? Come on. eh, it's a push. Wrong. Wrong. WRONG. Bebop is a good dub, especially by early 2000s standards. But it is hammy in comparison to the original performances. No. Absolutely no way. I haven't watched enough of Kai to comment, other than to say that since the Japanese version reuses the original voice cast, I don't see how the English track could be better. I've only read the comic of these three, so I can't comment. But judging by the other examples you listed, I'll remain skeptical.
I won't say I fall universally into that group and be "That Guy" here, it's just that a number of things I may look back in retrospect make me realize that more often than not Dubs are all done by the same handful of actors who are just there because they're on the studio's payroll. It's not all bad, but there comes a point where you have to realize how lazy it is. If you ignore the fact that Banager sounds absolutely nothing like a Teenager. Seriously it's almost more painfully obvious than the poor choices Sonic gets lumped with. Okay... this is definitely a case of "That Guy".
lol nice deflection, when my post was less extreme than your blanket statement. I said it was possible for a dub to be as good as a sub; you just flat-out said "sub>dub". Why backpedal? But I will say this: when a voice cast is auditioned and chosen by the people who created the characters (or at least with the input and approval of those who created the characters), it only makes sense they'd have a better idea of what the characters are supposed to sound like than localization studios in the US who have to pick the best they can find from a much more limited talent pool. And often, in the better dubs, the voice directors are picking the people who can best approximate the original cast anyway, like Bebop. I can see why people like that dub. But the original performances are much more naturalistic. I'm not a hardliner against dubs. There are quite a few I enjoy. Like Android Kikaider or Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi. Gundam Unicorn was also great. Any of these shows/OVAs, and many others, I can watch just as happily in English as in Japanese. But to claim an English dub as being "far and away superior" to the original? I have yet to see that happen. I've also never seen a Japanese dub of an American cartoon that was better than the original English. It shouldn't surprise anyone.
