    I had no idea what the TFs are called in Chinese til I saw a PRC site introducing the film.

    Apparently, Optimus Prime is called ... Pillar-That-Holds-Up-The-Sky.

    It makes no sense whatsoever but since it was the first name to be cited, I'm guessing that's, er, Optimus.

    Pillar-That-Holds-Up-The-Sky. Geez.

    The names were always the English names here, except that back in the earliest comics Prime was called Jetfire because his toy couldn't be released here and in the toyline Jetfire was considered the Autobot leader.

    LOL, I know what you mean.
    The name Qing Tianzhu actually means, he's the giant who holds the sky from falling. While Megatron is called Wei Zhentian, meaning he's so powerful that even the heaven trembles.

    The same competing style were also passed to Galvatron and Rodimus:
    Galvatron = Jing Potian: he's so dreadful that even the heaven's breaking apart
    Rodimus = Bu Tianshi: the one who restores the sky (or order)

    In Hongkong and any other Cantonese areas, we have different names.
    Optimus Prime = Oc Pacman
    Megatron = Mac Gardon
    Rodimus Prime = Loc Dicman (Hot Rodimus = Hah Dorman)
    Galvatron = Gac Weylon
    Basically, these were modified from the English pronounciation into more regular Chinese naming structure.

    Both versions were used since 22 years ago, and they always sound appealing to Chinese kids. Therefore, they are kept for any new series, including the movie.

    Well, I still dont know if the names will change for latin america. The translated versions will be:

    Optimus Prime: Optimus Prime.
    Bumblebee: Abejorro.
    Jazz: Jazz (dont make any sense change it.^^)
    Ironhide: I prefer to leave it Ironhide but the translation will be "Piel de Acero" (sounds more like those romantic mexican Tv shows. XD)
    Ratchet: Trinquete.

    MEgatron: Megatron.
    Starscream: If its not Starscream then its Grito Estelar.
    Barricade: Barricada.
    Blackout: Apagón.
    Bonecrusher: Rompe Huesos.
    Brawl: Reyerta (dont ask me, its the first time I heard that word XD)
    Frenzy: Frenesí.

    Honestly, I prefer the original names. XD

    everything except "grito estelar" and "piel de acero" sound ok to me, i mean "metal skin" doesnt sound good for a transformer, maybe other anime mecha, but not tfs.

    hope fully those are the only names that are not gonna be translated, heck! everyone here knows those two by their english names only!

    because they are so damn cool, if it sounds cheesy or corny translated, the dubbers will leave it in english.

    yes, i speak spanish, my lingua franca.

    Thank you, littleiron! :)  Despite my Chinese heritage, I've always preferred English names to Chinese, either Mandarin or Cantonese. It just doesn't sound right to my ears after years of hearing them in English. First time I heard Optimus demanding Sideswipe's jetpack in Mandarin (was in Shanghai) on one of my schoolmate's notebook, I was "Wha-what?!" and record-scratch. :lolol

    Speaking of foreign names, anyone from the Japanese side have names for both 'Bots and 'Cons?

    Optimus = Convoy
    Bumblebee = Bumble
    Jazz = Meister

    Optimus named "Convoy", "--- Convoy" at least, is a given.

    remember than in some G1 episodes OP was called "optimo" instead of "optimus", anyway i reeeeeeally doubt that were going to see any name changes even in the spanish dubbing in latin america, but the guys in spain might have that exact trouble, they usually change everything or at least say it as it was written (i-ron-hi-de instead of aironjaid ) or maybe they will call them "los transformadores" again :lol

    :lolol  :lolol  :lolol

    ^ Hey, when you speak Cantonese for much of your life, that transition from English to Cantonese actually works pretty well. It just takes some getting used to. I'll admit, it is a bit :lolol

    Their names were spoken as one word; i.e., not "Dicman" but "Lo-dic-man" for "Rodimus" with no pauses.

    I like all the Chinese ones, the "sky" ones that is.

    I also find it funny that in French Canada Starscream = Ego. Ya think? ;)

    Which suits them perfectly given their high positions. Well, to an extent in regards to both 'Trons.

    Nope. They're using the American names for some reason. No idea why.
