Yeah, I guess he is. "Neon", "happy meal toys", "lazy", "playskool", and "baby blue" are often used, without considering what they actually mean.

I hate "baby blue"! Everything from Energon Langquake's missiles to Blackout's main body are "baby blue". There's more than one way to describe blue that isn't royal or navy blue people.

I think that comic was pretty neon in itself.

Spot on observation though: People will throw out all manner of glib generalisations then not bother backing it up.

The only Transformers that look like Happy Meal toys.... are Happy Meal toys.

David Willis needs to learn that not every little thing that pops into his head is funny.

I think David Willis is a bit too much in love with himself.

"Man, this stuff looks" bored you to sleep? Well, I don't want to mock hyperbole or anything, but...irony. :lol

This may come as a shock, but not all comics are written & illustrated for the Garfield demographic.

Not one of his better strips, but accurate nonetheless.

Wow, tough crowd! I'd think that if there were any message board that could appreciate a comic about toy-collecting, this would be it. Not all comics have to be fall-down funny.... it's more like an illustrated blog. Personally I like Shortpacked.... the drawings are appealing, it deals with a tiny little societal niche that I'm a part of, and it's pretty smartly written most of the time. When it's not... so what? No comic can be 100% "on" all the time.

I don't know why there is so much seeming bitterness towards it on this board. It's puzzling. The guy is just another toy collector who happens to write a comic about it. I think his stuff has about the same funny/unfunny ratio as "Li'l Formers," but people here always trip all over themselves saying how great the Li'l Formers Strips are.

Please don't misconstrue the above comment... I don't mean to denigrate L'il Formers at all, it is ALSO a funny and well-drawn comic. Sometimes it just seems like there is an "Us and Them" mentality in regards to Shortpacked, since Willis is not really a conspicuous member of THIS particular toy board. Or maybe it is annoyance that the Transformers Wiki is written in a snarky fashion, who knows? Personally I like the comic and I like the guy's sense of humor. But that is merely my opinion, please feel free to disagree or disregard.

    *Ducking*

EDIT: Regarding THIS particular strip, I'll echo what others have said.... this one wasn't laugh-out-loud funny, but it's a pretty apt observation about our little hobby.

No, he's not right. Walky has a habit of taking what are presumably arguments he has on other forums by the sounds of his comics, and making a total balls of them. He dumbs them down so he can mock them with his characters, some of whom seem to only exist for that purpose.

The "cheap plastic" criticism towards Hasbro product still holds - there's no excuse for using the flat, detail swallowing translucent plastics(most notable when grey - check the inside of an alternator's leg sometime - urrrrgh) Hasbro often use, regardless of whether it's actually cheap or just looks it(cheaped out in the design phase, in other words), and if you compare their recent Hasbro Marvel Legends to Toybiz's, you'll see it's right. Toybiz only had one or two waves that were like that, It looks like all of Hasbro's is going to be. Honestly, rising cost of plastic is no excuse - smaller BAFs, smaller "Big guys" like Hulk, no comic, cheaper packaging, less paint apps, not to mention they're being made by a bigger company so they should be cheaper to make to begin with. It looks like they cost nearly half to produce as what they did before.

Oh, but of course, he hates all of Toybiz's product. Never backs up WHY though. I bet he loves the new Marvel Legends though!

I don't know why people would criticise the movie TFs over it though. They've actually improved quite a bit(though they have their own problems now - look at Jazz, eee), but I would say all previous lines are guilty of a lot of the criticism.

If these plastics AREN'T cheap, why don't they use Matte(like, compare a Gundam kit to your average TF and you'll see what I mean) plastic instead of the sunken detail stuff? If it doesn't cost them anything, why don't they do it? Does anyone really like that cheap look? I sure as hell don't.

He's nothing more than Hasbro's Number One Leg Humper.

Of course, you can't attack him back since he'll just claim he has insider knowledge, which he never backs with any evidence at all, and several other people who also have insider knowledge often claim he's full of crap.

Overall, I just don't get shortpacked. Why is it acceptable to bitch about fans, but not the toys? I hate this new trend of "anti-fan". Someone should make a reverse shortpacked, making fun of the guys who get their e-pen0r kicks out of taking shots at other fans. That might actually be funny since it would require actual wit to write.

No, he writes a comic that's alternating between a semi-decent comical drama set in a toy shop, and getting angry at fans he disagrees with(of course, he makes a comic about the "Disagree" thing too - with one character "Disagreeing" with fact - this is VERY frustrating when it's actually used online, usually by Neo-cons and the ilk, and I hate it being thrown around, while in that particular comic it was valid, I know he's still implying there are other cases where it is not. He needs to back his shit up when he claims so much knowledge of the toy making process). There's very little "This is about being a toy collector" in the comic.
