No man, painting that stuff is easy as shit. Get a good silver. For Transformers jobs like this I like Citadel paint. Yeah there's better quality stuff but I generally don't bother with high quality paint unless I'm doing a full repaint. Hell, I still have all the paints from my old warhammer days that I use for jobs like this.

Dilute your paints with water. Super easy with acrylics. Do a black base layer. Then do a few layers of silver. Seal with matte or gloss, depending on what your style is.

I've painted Warhammer 40K minis for a few years, minis that are just barely taller than American quarters. Painting something as big as Scrapper and Devvy's face is easycakes.

Just as an example on how good hand painting looks, here's a mini I did years ago:

And another one who's actually mostly all silver. Again, all hand painted.

What I'm trying to say is that hand painting isn't hard. People have been doing it for years with all kinds of tools and all kinds of paints. It's simply a skill that needs to be learned and practiced. As someone who's painted stuff for YEARS, I can tell you for a fact that if all you're doing is just gonna paint Devy's face and Scrapper's face silver, it's nothing more than a 15 minute job with a jar of black, silver, some water, a broad brush and some sealant. It's one of those things that's a pretty good first time job as if you fuck up and splash silver too much on the black, then well you've got black paint to go over your mistake!

Since the faces in question aren't supposed to be silver...
...why are you guys planning on intentionally making your figures incorrect?

I'm thinking about painting up Devastator's face simply because I like the idea of a silver face better. Fuck cartoon or toy accuracy. I just want my stuff to looks good. That's my stance at least.

I'm okay with Scrapper being grey though. Doesn't bother me a bit.

TakaraTomy put silver on Devastar's forearms that aren't accurate to anything so the concept of "correct" hardly even matters.

well.. when you look at how cartoon accurate a lot of the figure is.. yes, it does matter a bit. one little stripe on the forearms isn't going to get rid of the rest of the very G1 toon accurate color scheme.

And that silver is added detail, not simply incorrect detail. They often are willing to add some detail where needed to prevent something from looking too bland. This is why Drag Strip has the different yellows.

It's not a great travesty, but it is inaccurate to both the G1 toy and cartoon and doesn't add anything, in my opinion. The arms have enough detail that there was no need to break the iconic black forearms/purple hands combo. If anything, it looks a bit jarring to have those silver wristwatches -- it's the first place my eyes go when I see pictures of the UW version. This was a pickup from the SDCC version that really wasn't necessary or wanted IMO.

If you have both the UW and CW versions, this is easily rectified by switching the forearm pieces. I think he looks much better this way.

Regarding the face, I think both views are accurate. The UW version is very cartoon accurate, but the darkness of the grey used makes it difficult to make out the face in certain lightings. I still prefer it because of it's accuracy, but I think the face on my CW version looks better on the shelf, if that makes sense. The UW version may have worked better if it used a slightly less dark gray, but ultimately I think it's fine as is.

Sorry, I meant Scavenger. And I've come around on the new knees since I've been playing around with the individual bots, I like the added range of motion.

Well I'm an idiot! Thank you! I've had the CW version since the summer, transformed him a billion times, and just never pulled out the head far enough. Thank you, this works great on both the CW and UW versions.

Wait, doesn't that completely go against your "G1 or GTFO" stance, and particularly the constant slamming of the new CW team members?
Maybe some of us also don't care about cartoon or toy accuracy and just want good looking figures.

Anyway, my Devastator finally left Japan and is in transit. Not sure if its boat or plane, but whatever. It's on its way!

No? Because you never rely paid attention. I wanted full on G1 teams and I prefer to have G1 characters over new ones. However little details never bothered me at all. I only care about having the characters, and if they are mostly the original colors, I'm fine with that. Like Generation Arcee. She certainly isn't the G1 color scheme but I still got her and I still love her because she is still a mostly pink and white space car.

I don't care or mind if you like new members but don't expect me to like them. Really. Grey or silver faces, Devastator is still the original team with their original alt modes, just with Mixy being a different make and model. When every other Combiner team had a replacement new punk, I'll take Devastator no questions asked. I'm very glad Hasbro decided that G1 is the better route when doing this guy.

Anybody else still waiting for the slow shipping from Anime Export? The last tracking update shows something back on the 14th but nothing since. I've never used them before and was curious if I should be seeing better progress. It's through JP post if that helps. Just trying to get an idea when to expect it. I didn't expect it before Christmas but had my fingers crossed, haha!

AE gave the slow option but the price was the same. How did you even get a cheap/slow option?

it depends on number of items, for UW04 and MP Tracks, the price was 6800 yen for EMS or 6100 for slow shipping. I went EMS since the difference is minor and I want them before Xmas. slow shipping could be they sent them separately, UW04 by EMS since it's over sized and above 15000 yen and MP Track using SAL

That's exactly it. It was a multiple item order. Menasor, the three Decepticon fembots, Ultra Magnus and Devastator. I think that's everything. It was a bit cheaper and I went for it because those few bucks actually did make a difference for Christmas shopping. :)

Personally I never felt why citadel paint's better.... I'm too used to tamya and used that for my AD&D/WH/40k painting... the consistency was much better.

Though yeah... hand painting is not that tough IMO.. spraying is by far harder. Hell, for things like silver is especially easy to paint in basically any colour. Not to mention can always opt for the sharpie for even simpler work.

Checking the shipping quote on RobotKingdom, just the cheap shipping is $60. EMS is $90 :jawdropper:

I can't imagine strait from Japan being any better. I'm probably better off finding a domestic seller.

Also, thank you guys for all the replies and tips for painting the faces.

Well...Citadel paints aren't the best. They don't suck but honestly if I didn't have so many of them in great colors still, I'd just go with Reaper and Tamiya.

Hell, GW replaced so many of their good colors with their new, bland range I'm glad I still have jars of some of the stuff I do. They work well for detail work on transformers and gundam kits.

EMS from Japan was $60. Robotkingdom is famous for outrageous shipping prices.

RK _used_ to be OK, but yeah they've been pretty ridiculous for the past few years. Why I haven't bought anything from them in a long time.

Well said (I concur 100%)! I'm located in Asia and not even once in my collecting lifetime have I ever used RK. Shipping rates are atrocious.
