The better RPG of 1995? Chrono Trigger, or Earthbound?

IMO, it is Chrono Trigger. Lovable characters, great settings, great gameplay, and score.

Though, honestly, take my opinion with a grain of salt, seeing as how i haven't played Earthbound yet. (No $200, no Wii U :(  )

What about you guys? Which is better?

Chrono Trigger is better. The only reason why people hype Eathbound is due to its style and cult following as an rpg it is pretty standard.

You really should just play Earthbound and see for yourself rather than making some thread about it. Both are excellent games. Objectively, Chrono Trigger is the superior one in all points whether it be gameplay, story, characters, etc. But I personally like Earthbound better due to personal history.

    Chrono Trigger.
I haven't played either game, but Toriyama doesn't JUST lend his art style to a game.

Chrono Trigger and Earthbound were both great games. The latter was actually harder and kept you on your toes. Chrono Trigger can be mind numbing especially after replaying the same scenes just to get all the endings especially when your cast are maxed out.

My vote still goes to Chrono Trigger. Everything that lead up to the game was a very exiciting time in game history. Yeah. A biased vote but a vote nonetheless.

My fave Toriyama game is still Dragon Quest. I would also choose it over FF any day.

Chrono Trigger on every level. Both are pretty much classics, but gameplay, visuals, story, characters, and most importantly IMO, the music, is better in Chrono Trigger.

It is a little unfair to compare though. Earthbound wasn't going for technical prowess, and while the story ended up serious, it was constantly trying to do some tongue-in-cheek humor.

I would say a closer matchup would be between FF6 and Chrono Trigger.

If I remember correctly not a lot of people played Earthbound back then. Not even RPG fans.

These days? Smells more like hipster talk over Earthbound with a dash of price and rarity. Stinks like that scratch and sniff page ad. It smelled like BO.

FF6 was multiple weekend rental play for me like FF4.

Chrono trigger was an instabuy/months of obsessing/lunch and arcade money sacrifices.

I remember buying FF4 and FF6 for 15$ and 20$ a year or two after.

If I remember my time with Earthbound correctly, each place you visit was large, from caves, malls, dessert. It made the game feel non-linear. In comparison, Chrono Trigger's felt short, pre determined and very linear which is pretty much the opposite of what you think a time traveling theme would convey. This was the biggest drawback for Chrono Trigger for me. Chrono cross was even worse, at the time, not the next gen game I was expecting especially from a huge mark it's predecessor left. Add the huge world you can explore with Earthbound's refreshing setting, yeah, Earthbound won me over it's gameplay years ago. I had more fun exploring than traveling in time and mind numbingly playing the same scenes at max stats over and over again.

Chrono Trigger however gave me a reason to back track with is time travel theme. Something Earthbound clearly lacked. I did back track through towns but there was pretty much not a lot to do. Finding the different endings was fun but was met with an equal painstaking labor.

In retrospect, both games are in need of a next gen version, not necessarily a remake but with sandbox games these days, this how imagined it to evolve now back in 95'.

Not a huge FF fan, thus, didn't want to make a thread about that and CT squaring (heh) off.

Also, sorry about the lack of poll. I made this as a spur of the moment thing this morning.

Chrono Trigger. Even today, I still think it's one of the best games of all time. Heck, I have it twice, the SNES when I got it originally, then again when I got a 2DS not that many years ago.

I even have a symphonic remix of the soundtrack and the OST!

They're very different so it's a hard comparison. Still, for me it's Earthbound, due the unique style and amazing story. Also because Ness is one of my favorite Smash characters. I had to try his game because he was one of the few Smash characters who at the time I never played their game and so was curious. Of course I had to play the game through a rom I downloaded from an old site at the time due to the already mention rarity of the game.

I am a huge Earthbound fan. And I think I have to admit, Chronotrigger is the RPG in a technical or design sense. They are both a blast to play, so by that measure it's a tie. Therefore, the award goes to Chrono.
