Neat! MAz seems like a great guy, so I'm happy that he was able to help out like that. Reading the process he undertook to achieve that (seemingly simple) photo, I'm impressed, as always, with his dedication and respect for what others deride as "kids' toys". He definitely pushes the hobby into a realm of profound respectability, and I thank his efforts for that. His enthusiasm, well-spoken articles, and general amiability portray TF fans in a positive way I think a lot of people overlook.

I can't really remember much about these guys' personalities from their 2 issue appearance in season 1 (probably time for another reread ) but this preview has already made me like them more than 80% of the season 2 LL cast. Why couldn't we have been following these guys?

They're scavengers. It's probably originally an autobot ark-style vessel (a smaller example of such, but we've seen, like, 6 ark-ships in modern use) they found and fixed up.
