I recently bought a g1 slag from ebay, the seller states in the auction description: Excellent condition , no broken parts with minor playwear.

When I got the figure, it's very clear that the figure was repaired on multiple spots. First, both horns were repaired, one of them still loose and you can pull it out easily. The silver cube pieces on the sides of slag was repaired(He melted the plastic peg on the inner side of the pastic to fasten it) The feets were repaired and they were from different slag(different chrome color), again, pegs were melted again on the inner part to fasten them. It must be a friday job on the repairing too because he also melted some of the other plastics around the damaged spot.

I don't want to return the stuff because that's too much trouble for me, but I would really want at least a partial refund from this seller, I paid $40 for the figure + accessories(minus 2 missiles). I don't know the going rate for repaired slag those days, how much should I ask? Thanks

Well, its difficult to access repair work being done because for toys it depends on the satisfaction of the customer i.e. are you satisfied with the level of skill performed.

On the other hand, you could contact the seller and highlight your displeasure and show pictures of the "repair" areas and state that he was "dishonest".

Besides, for all you know, the G1 Slag that he owed was initially owed by someone else i.e. repair work not done by him.

I understand that part, however, this is a guy who sells only transformers, so he definitely should know his toys, when he put something like "excellent, no broken parts" he should be responsible for what he's posting.

I'll post the repaired area pictures tonight(Just want to make sure I'm not flaming him)

You should get a partial refund or send the figure back...his description did not match the toy...

Yeah, I understand what you mean. I realised that I made a mistake in my original posting. I meant "dishonest" instead of "honest" - my bad.

    As promised, here they are:
First two pictures you will see the pegs are melted to make them flat(I only see this on repaired toys)

Now it's the pegs on the feet, you can see how bad the plastic was melted

Chrome color on the feets are different

Looking at the pictures - you have a case. TYou should contact the seller first and try to resolve this issue between yourselves...that failing, I suggest you lodge a complaint with ebay, saying that the seller wasn't honest. I hope you kept email records with the seller and I do hope the email did mention that Slag was in mint condition and there was no indication of repair work being done as that would "enhance" your case.

no emal from seller at all(this guy has 0 communication). But he did mention "in excellent condition, nothing broken" on the auction description. For me, if the figure WAS broken, repaired or not, it should not be considered excellent.

    Ebay:
Ok, I just looked at my Slag, and he has the same thing for the pegs being melted(looks exactly the same as yours). Its what the factory people did so that the pieces dont fall off easily, so to explain the feet being different colors, he could have just switched out a leg. But that dosent explain the horn. He should at least give you a partial refund for that, because it looks broken.

Is that a piece of chrome plastic next to the horn?

Anyway, it's quite easy to pull Slag's horns off - they're just popped into place and are made of soft plastic just for that purpose. They're held in place by little rings that fit into the head.

The melted bits are normal, it happens more for chromed bits on toys.

Here's a pictures I took for jazz, the right car door was repaired and the left one not. As you can see. Factory melted peg should be flat and smooth(perfect round shape with no tears too). And repaired ones are not(they are flater and not smooth on the edge at all) On my slag the flat peg looks the same as the one on jazz's right door
    [IMG]

About the melting on the pegs for the feet, are you sure that's normal from factory?(No smooth surface on plastic, the surrounding area has holes from plastic melting)

If anyone has a non-repaired slag, can you please help checking those spots?

As for the horn, that little piece is the ring whole suppose to hold it, when I got it the ring was loose inside the dino's head, and the horn was out.

    Ebay:
The inside of my Slags legs looks pretty much the same as yours does. They have the little melted x thing where they melted the plastic. Im fairly positive that mine wasnt repaired, as I bought it from the original owner, who took fairly good care of his toys, and these werent touched til I got ahold of them for like 20 years. Im sure that if you took his upper torso/head area apart, you would be able to fix the horn somehow.

Looks more like someone performed some parts swapping with parts from another Jazz. Check the peg on both doors - different design.

The difference in chrome color on the Slag could be caused by that too.

Check both toys for mold differences between the left and right side parts.
Normally they should be the same (only mirrorred), if not, then someone has been swapping parts between different version of the toys.

On Slag, the gold chrome feet, chrome boxes on his side, and the horns were attached by melting the plastic pegs down. The metal ring on the horns was used so the horns didn't have to be melted directly to the plastic on the dino head.
The process they used to melt the pegs wasn't really consistent, so it's possible to notice differences between each melted peg.

I've also noticed that some of the gold chrome on the older Transformers wears easily, and sometimes unevenly between parts. The photo you posted looks more like the chrome on one of the feet has more wear than the other but it's hard to tell just from a photo.

I've found that a lot of descriptions on ebay are subject to interpretation. "Excellent condition with no damage" can mean anything from the toy never being broken to broken parts being replaced. Still, if it says there's no damage and one of the horns is completely out of the head, I have a hard time considering that "no damage".

Some people pointed out that the pegs for the chrome boxes on his sides should be black instead of white, is that true?

Either way, the lesson learned is: it's usually much better to buy from individual owners than those TF dealers, those dealers usually buy TF lots so they can swap parts to build complete one.

No. It depends on the color of the plastic they used for the chromed bits. This tends to be any plastic color they had a surplus of at the time the toy was made.

On TFs black, white, and translucent white seem to be used most often. Sometimes brown, less often other colors.

They usually tend to try to use colors that won't look too bad when the chrome wears unless the chrome parts are cast in the same mold as other parts of the toy (usually on the earlier toys). I've seen chrome black, white, translucent white, grey, and that silver-grey like Trypticons accessories came in. I've seen brown with some of the gold-chromed parts. Hoist and Trailbreaker had the chrome parts cast in the same mold as some of the other parts so they end up orange or red. Bluestreak, Smokescreen, and Prowl had the chrome parts cast in with other parts, so they come out red, grey, or white underneath depending on which toy they're from. Ratbat's weapons were cast in with some of his other parts, so they are purple under the chrome. Meanwhile, the chrome parts on Optimus Prime were cast in a seperate mold because they can be black, whilte, or translucent white under the chrome.
