Off a Japanese site pre-order for dev was 140 + 40 ems shipping so 180 shipped for Takara.

He won't be less stable than Hasbro combined since Scrapper's elbows will be locked bent 90 degrees and in that position same length as Hasbro so not sure why everybody is assuming it is less stable. In fact the plastic from the arms touching the ground in foot mode is greater than US version so it should be just as if not more stable.

Hasbro themselves stated the reason for the difference to Takara is to keep the cost lower. It wasn't about stability of the figure.

He looks great I hope I can get him at some point, if I do I definitely will paint up some parts just to add some detail.

The caution stripes for one thing always make any tech think look neat.

It's actually a bit of both. Basically, it saves money, and it ensures Scrapper's arms will never break from any play.

Look at the elbows on Unite Scrapper. No matter what, like on the elbows for Hook and Mixmaster, the Hasbro version's elbows were going to be worse than the Takara's version's elbows, which have pins. Hasbro's cheap.

Considering that, look at the elbows on Hook and Mixmaster and consider how easy it would be for a kid to break them, or at least pop them out and lose them. It would suck, but it wouldn't be a huge deal for those guys to break their elbows. An imaginative kid could just pretend their arms are more geewunny.

Now imagine the same thing happening to Scrapper. Not only would Scrapper be damaged, but now Devastator's foot would be ruined. Devastator could survive Hook and Mixmaster losing their elbows because they have no bearing on the combined mode except for a small guide tab, but he couldn't survive Scrapper losing his elbows.

This is why the Hasbro version has no elbows. It's the cheapest way to ensure the main feature of the toy, Devastator, will hold up to roughhousing and careless play. Smaller figures don't get this same long-term durability consideration because they're also significantly cheaper. A $10~$20 dollar figure breaking is an upset kid. A $150 dollar figure breaking is an angry parent.

I decided to bite the bullet and just get him now since i found him on my bday! My god. The fact that he exists at all is absolutely astounding to me. Like this last year of transformers collecting has been mind boggling with all the awesome releases hasbro has made. I mean 3-4 years ago we were askimg at conventions to make combiners and arcee and what not and we were told they would never happen, but now i have them in front of me. In real life. Im in awe.

I think devastator himself is awesome! I just wish his shoulders in combined mode had ratchets of some kind. same with his elbows and bicep swivels. Theyre all just a little too loose for me to be comfy with them. However he can still hold his gun fine. Overall 9.5 out of ten for the set. They look great togethor and will be even more awesome when i get the perfect effect set.

Great points!!! I had not considered that at all. The combined mode is clearly Hasbro's focus in these figures and any defect to Scrappers arms would render him unable to stand normally.

I'm definitely getting Takara/Tomy's Devastator, but I got the SDCC version too. I'm mostly happy, BUT the metal pin in one of my Bonecrusher's legs is too loose. The result is his "calf" is loose and pivots awkwardly at the pin. :(

Any chance Hasbro would replace this figure? Who would I call?

can the pin be removed? I've seen a scrapper with similar issue in a fist, the pin lacks the rough grooved end so it spins in the pinhole, maybe there is a way to fix such a defect??

I've been reading up on metal pins. Maybe I described the problem wrong - the pin is in there solid, but I think it didn't get pushed in far enough. So the "calf" can slide along the pin, making it wobbly. I might be up for trying to fix it myself by just heating up the end of the pin and pushing it in a bit. It makes me nervous because I've never done it before, but it might be worth it ...

Seriously? I thought I made a pretty damn positive review and, tbh, I was overly generous at some points in the positive things I said.

You can't write a review about this toy and not mention its crappy elbows and lack of paint. They're the elephant in the room and must be addressed. My review was objective, but reality is reality. The Takara version is better and my verdict is exactly that: If budget is not a problem, then the Takara version is definitely the way to go. If budget is a problem or you can't stand the wait, you're not losing by getting the Hasbro. As for me, I'm not "wasting my money" by getting both. I'm getting a decent Devastator that I can mess around with for 6 months and then getting an amazing Devastator that I can happily display in either individual or combined, rather then the just the one that's only really display-worthy combined. I'm getting the Takara and Hasbro versions of every combiner, because I display my Combiners on a separate shelf to my separate teams.

And really there's no reason to be an asshole. I'm certainly not someone you need to remind that their collecting toys. I'm not sure if you intended it, but you're talking like a condescending prick because I dared buy something that I enjoy but aren't completely amazed by and able to look at objectively and I dare get two versions with their own merits. You're on a forum that is 90% people who collect toys, if you're going to be a dick about people spending their own money on toys and telling them that they're "wasting their money", perhaps you're in the wrong place.

bro, a wise veteran here once told me to IGNORE posts that just get wacky or sound they they are going out of their way to sound outrageous and what (they) believe is the "die hard G1 or TF collector" response.

Dont sweat stuff like this. Just smile and shrug. You do a good job, and are a positive influence on this community.

That said, I disagree on a few points.
1st, If a child is going to playing or touching this thing, the Hasbro is 100% the way to go. Looking at this toy from a G1 kids (grown now) perspective, this could not be any more Hardcore G1 roots. I had a hell of a lot of fun with my, very limited articulation ed G1 Devestator, that for a KID...its 100% fine in the articulation dept, and my 7 year old that loves MPs, Alts, and my other 3rd party stuff agrees that this new Dev, and his bots, are fine in that regard for PLAY.

NOW, for me, loving this high quality set as much as I do, I may spring for a takara myself down the road, just to paint up. But then again, I may actually pick up another hasbro and go the 3rd party route, as what I see from what they are doing from the 1st offerings is impressive.

I would recommend to anyone just to pick the Hasbro one up. You could either sell it or trade it down the road, OR spring for a 3rd party upgrade that will probably trump Takaras offering.

Keep in mind, this is FRESH, so all those 3rd party companies will ALL be making shit for this...and from my experience, they only get better as time rolls on.

Buy this one..play with it..have fun..then a year down the road, pick from a multitude of 3rd party offereings to spice of your Devs the way YOU want it.

I am picturing 3rd party offerings for this the likes we havent seen from any other toy. I can see many collectors that are thinking in thier head the takara will be LEAPS AND BOUNDS better, but in the end, I can see a bit of disappointment. Id say get hasbro with a coupon, and wait and pick one of a plethora of 3rd party upgrades.

    Dave

All I keep telling myself is remember what reprolabels did for metroplex, it took hasbro's version and made it amazing. But all in all I'm pleasantly happy with my impulse buy of devastator. The flaws are there and we all know what they are so I'm not going to complain a about those anymore since we have a plethora of upcoming 3rd party products to fix those.

Would I have bought Devastator at full price? Probably not, but the 20% coupon brought it to a point I could accept, 20 bucks a voyager :)

I wasn't planning on getting this guy, but my girlfriend bought it for me as an early birthday present. I must say, this figure just hits all the right notes for me. The size isn't as bad as I was thinking it was going to be from the photos. The combination is stellar. The individual figures are all pretty fun and intricate without detracting from the combination transformation.

I didn't even remember the elbows not being able to move until I read through the thread again. Dem bows are such a non issue. I love this figure, and I got it for free. Can't beat that!

So I just found out that the pegs on Devastator's forearms are 5mm compatible and I've had a hell of a time messing with them.

God, waiting for this guy to arrive at my doorstep is murder. I ordered him off of Amazon a couple days back and he's set to arrive on the 20th or 23rd. I want it to be the 20th now, dammit.

Right. I imagine I'll get the Takara version eventually, either for review or just because I had a moment of weakness.

I'll open him up, admire the paint, mess with him a bit, and then put him on a shelf next to my Hasbro version. I'll sigh and realize the magic is gone, all of it well spent on the Hasbro version a year earlier.

I'll come to the forums, I'll see some posts by the small handful of self-righteous people, no more than three, who managed to follow through on their Hasbro boycott, and I'll think to myself "Hey, they're gushing about all the same stuff that we were saying while they were bitching!".

Then I'll have a sensible chuckle.

okay but you shouldn't have to pay extra for basic articulation and paint. that's the problem.

and i still don't understand how elbows would make devastator any less stable.
