Driver follows GPS off disused bridge, and wife dies, police say - CNET

That's about 15 minutes from my house. I won't lie I laughed pretty hard when I saw it.

You had to try to do that, I don't see how you could be so focused you drive around barricades and signs/cones.

On the flip side if this was some road down in Indy, those asshats would have replaced it(structural issues) as fast as it happened instead of leaving it closed.

Also there is actual a History channel special on the Cline Ave. collapse in the early 80's, the one from 1989 was a construction accident, but scary #$%^% if you watch how they supported it.

I bet he ignored the wife's nagging as well as the numerous roadblocks and signages.

Yeah it's extremely dumb to follow your GPS blindly - but 'laughing pretty hard at this'? The wife died, OP. Not cool at all. :(

To be honest. The only reason this concerns me is because we are going to be having self driving cars very soon.

So while it's fucking moronic for a dumb ass to literally drive off a bridge (use some fucking common sense), I could see this being an issue with self driving cars.

Wouldn't the GPS have been updated since 2009 to show that the bridge was closed?

It would be fairer if the driver died and not his wife :(

Well, my main reason would be so I could go to a bar, get hammered and have my car drive me home.

The amount I spend on cabs after drinking covers off the extra price of the car.

I started to lol, until I read the part about his wife dying... what an idiot. I've had our GPS tell me to go OFF ROAD before, but had enough sense to not drive in a damn corn field. :D

People need to bring out the map and use their brains.

This isn't very funny. The guy is 64 and his wife died. Whoever programmed that GPS should be fired.

And if the car drives your drunk butt off a bridge because it followed what it thought was "correct directions" from a GPS system? No thanks.

Sometimes the GPS systems (even in Garmins or Car manufacturer installed systems) are just that stupid. I remember being in the car with my brother. He drives a Ford. We were trying to reach a certain spot in town and the dumb fucking thing told my brother to turn right in about 1/4 mile. So we left the parking lot of a Best Buy by making a right turn on to the road. Figuring that we would need to turn right in 1/4 mile as directed, my brother stayed in the far right lane. We get to a stop light and when it hits green we go. As we were exiting the intersection, the fucking thing says, "TURN LEFT" (at the intersection we just crossed). DA FUQ?!?!?! What happened to turning right in about 1/4 mile?????
