Kinda... They changed the dimensions by a fraction of an inch and renamed the Kallex, but the new Kallex line doesn't have a 1x1, and I used 1x1's to raise all my other Detolfs.
Does Ikea make any cabinets wider than the Detolfs? I like them but they aren't wide enough to display a line of figures without looking cluttered. I bought this cabinet on Amazon earlier this year and while I like the size, it's a POS and not worth what they're currently asking for it (I got it for about $160 shipped). Any recommendations?
Don't need an excuse! If using detolfs, the double mod is the way to go. Take a look at PAX display cabinets - they'll require more lighting as no glass background Can also add acrylic risers to maximize display space
that's pretty cool.. never thought about it. is it pretty much just removing the side glass panel and putting them up next to each other?
So I'm wondering what kind of creative things people do to make the most of the bottom shelf of these. With it near the floor, I've always felt it was kind of "lower priority" than the top 3 shelves. Right now my set is is generally this Top Shelf = Mix of deluxes/voyagers/3p based on a theme. I.e. "1984 Decepticons", "1986 Autobots", "FoC Dinobots and Combaticons". 2nd Shelf = 3p combiners, Combiner Wars combiners, Omega Supreme, G1-style Unicron (of course not all at once), with generations deluxes at their feet 3rd shelf = Masterpiece. 2 per shelf (i.e. Grimlock + Optimus). Bottom Shelf: Pure randomness. Kind of forgotten about. Any ideas?
I used an old headboard from the hotel I work at to build something to raise them up. Didn't cost me a thing
I just put expedits on the bottom to raise the whole row up. Plus I put figures on top of the detolfs (usually big ones that are easier to dust) to maximize shelf space
im going to ask some very redundant questions now.. and ill do it here since its topical of the thread so the expedits are like modular? are they sold in groups of 4 or individually? do you ever worry the base is going to cave in on itself? it must be pretty sturdy? with the raised height, do they sway? have you secured the detlof to the expedit? do the basses happen to be a little bit wider then the bottom of the case? in there current location my cases get a little wobble if someone runs by or slams the rooms door hard. this summer i think im going to pick up two more shelves, some dioders, and those bases and move the whole operation to the finished basement on lamanent "wood" floor on top of a cement pad... so that should be sturdier
Depending on your budget, you guys should check out displays2go.com. They have some really nice options there. I have 2 large glass cases from them and couldn't be happier.
Pretty much, but you have to use a saw to cut away some of the wood at the top and the base to get them to line up properly. It's a bit much to post in here, but I did a complete write-up on my blog as I went through the whole process The Nerd-Cave Reconfiguration: Duel Door Mod for Your Detolfs Agreed, Expedits are the way to go, the extra height adds a LOT to them. Here's one of my setup before I added the backgrounds and lights (don't mind the mess, the pic was taken during the building process) Pics...we need pics man! XD
I'm using two Expedits to support a single Detolf. I've read on other forums where people have used a single Expedit to raise a single Detolf for a quite some time and it seems to have held up fine. But I just can't bring myself to to do that. I sleep better at night knowing the weight of the Detolf(over 90 lbs) is being supported by two units and the combination of the two inside walls of the units working together as a middle "brace." This might even be more important as the Expedits have been replaced with the thinner Kallax models.
i spent quite a bit of time debating the displays2go (and comparable sites) but could never commit as wasnt able to modify to the same degree as cheap-o ikea furniture - looks good though and i bet less dusty than the detolfs I didnt realize that they had single unit kallax... as for the expedit cubes - if not centered completely over the two cubes, it may actually be safer to have a 1:1 ratio EDIT For an earlier lighting question: i would shop around for LEDs as the dioders are over-priced and some people dont like the soft/yellow lighting (although generally only apparent when compared to cool/bright white LEDs) also recommend buying MORE lighting supplies than you require as you will invariably expand your collection and lights from different manufatured runs will vary slightly and there may be a noticeable difference (more pronounced in photos, but once seen can never be unseen)
Yeah I'm gonna 100% go for the expedits. Those look fantastic. I could use the space under them too. Only question now is how the hell am I going to get the heavy as shit case on top of one by myself -_-
Are you sure you don't want to claim that collection? Resisting urge to drive to ikea tomorrow......just barely I'm just going to keep plugging along with my two cases and puck lighting. But after May (warbotron fierce attack, war dog, appollyon, sever). I'm going to be at capacity I think. And the puck lights are ok but the limited betters life takes the fun out of it
