The Fallen was too lazy to pick up a copy of Reign of Starscream to see that with the right writers Starscream can get things done. But then again somewhere between the dog fight in the first movie and the start of the second film Starscreams competency chip fell out.

In many ways I also blame Hasbro. Far too much of Prime vs Megatron over the franchise history to really develop replacements for Megatron. Optimus Prime's rouges gallery is rather weak on robots that can be an equal of Prime that aren't Megatron or a reformatted Megatron.

 

The explanations about how important Megatron was don't really hold up in the movies themselves. As a leader, Megatron didn't really do anything in the first and second films. All the plotting was handled by Starscream and the Fallen. And Megatron wasn't the only one who could've killed Optimus. Did anyone actually watch the forest battle? Megatron was getting his ass kicked until Starscream and Grindor turned up. Surely one or two of the Constructicons would have been enough help for Scream and Grindor.

Honestly, after he lost the strength he had in the first film, nothing about movie Megatron makes him any better than movie Starscream.

 

It's what we see on film. The Fallen has absolutely no interest in getting his ass up from his chair until he knows Optimus is dead. He wants Megs, his major asset, back to kill him before he does anything. It's kinda smart, not even daring to leave your lair let alone go to Earth until you know the only foe who can defeat you is dead.

And most of my post besides that is pulled from the backstory from the canon comics.

Starscream has been a good leader for the Decepticons since Megs left them, but he knows he's just not as powerful as Megatron and thus kisses his ass when he's around. Megs certainly isn't as incompetent as you say he is; however since apparently my arguments are considered 90% conjecture despite mostly pulling them from canon material (the films included), I won't bother for Megatron's case. All I'm saying is he's far from he incompetent weakling people make him out to be post-TF1.

 

As I believe films shouldn't rely on tie ins, I don't count the comics. If you really believe you can defend the films using only what was shown in the films, go ahead. I'm not Sponge or Livingdeaddan. I won't accuse you of anything unless I can pick out what wasn't in the films.

 

Not entirely; whilst Optimus began and maintained an excellent early advantage, if you look closely at the background when Starscream appears and chases after Sam, you can see Megatron knocking Prime back and walloping him to the ground.

Megatron's problem at that point was that, instead of continuing to beat his opponent while he was down, he opted to pursue the boy himself, giving Prime the chance to retaliate.

Lesson to be learned, don't abandon a downed opponent, 'cause that's just begging for them to get back up and wallop you from behind.

 

Which just proves Megatron is an incompetent combatant. Starscream was already chasing Sam. Considering Starscream is much faster than his leader, Megatron had no reason to disengage his battle with Optimus.

 

This and it was a way to show off the Constructicons.

 

Because People would still bitch that Megatron only appeared once and died from Allspark heartburn.

This thread has gone in ridiculous directions.

The Fallen needed Optimus out of the way and Megatron successfully killed him for his master.

This alone is reason enough for his revival and is an explanation drawn DIRECTLY from and supported by the film.
