Okay... this bugs me... I want to know.. Why would it benefit Nintendo in -any- way to make false scarcity for certain figures? It does not get them any money.. those 100 dollar figures? Nintendo doesn't see -any- of it. Nintendo doesn't see -any- of the money once Walmart/Target orders them. You want to bitch at someone, bitch at the stores for not ordering enough.. Oh wait! Nintendo was stupid for making such figures! Now they are stupid for not making enough of them! And it's not like there have -ever- been scarce Transformers *CoughbattleunicorncoughcoughendoflinecharactersCoughcough*
Because scarcity/rarity inflates hype/demand. It's what caused the Wii craze for pretty much its entire first year.
But if Nintendo is not producing anymore WiiFit Trainer/Marth/Villager What use is it to create hype for them?
Because now people will buy the ones they want right away in fear of them not getting another chance.
I am only buying the characters that I enjoy the most. So far I only own link. I also want Mario, Mega Man and possibly Sonic. I don't see the point of going completionist with this line. The figures don't do much right now.
I like the Amiibo's but hate how difficult it is to find certain ones whether that's caused by short shipping certain figures or making them exclusive to various retailers. So far I have Pikachu, Link, Zelda and Marth and have a few more pre ordered. I like most of them but I'm not paying more than the normal retail for them.
In the case of Skylanders and Disney infinity, you actually need the different collectible figures for various reasons. In Skylanders Giants (and I'd wager the other games in that series), there are various areas in the game that cannot be accessed unless you have a Skylander of a specific element or Size (The Giants can open up paths in the game). In the case of Disney Infinity, different characters have different abilities which helps navigate the game world (For instance; The Incredible Hulk can Leap over massive distances, Buzz Lightyear can fly, Spider-Man can climb walls and swing from building-to-building with his web) The Amiibos in Smash Bros. aren't at all integral to Game Play.
Yeah, in those games you get the characters from the toys with their abilities. Smash has all its characters playable in the game without amiibos. Amiibos are just overpowered, trainable AI. Not nearly as necessary as Skylanders or Disney Infinity for better or worse.
I started buying some Amiibo figures. But looking at the madness on ebay and all the scalping going on, it's kinda disgusting. I stopped buying Transformers because of this scalper shit. Might stop with Amiibos if the scalping continues and I'm not able to find anything good.
well played artificial hype = artificial demand so stupid and silly, yet it works. glad I am avoiding these like the plague.
Looked up the figmas & figuarts figures of Samus after reading this thread. Truly amazing! But I still want some Amiibos to hang on the tree I laughed when I saw the pic of Little Mac. Thought I had seen every Amiibo in stores up to now, but I've never once seen Little Mac before. Fun Fact! I made a half dozen x-mas presents out of a Lakitu toy one year. Drilled a hole into the bottom of his cloud, put him up on a stick to make it look like he was floating, drilled another hole in the top of the cloud, added a straw from a can of WD-40 to act as his fishing pole, tied a string from the straw to the star on top of a Christmas tree salt shaker I had found to make it look like he was lowering the star onto it, and voila! Instant cuteness! And did one variant with Tails instead of Lakitu. I'll post a picture soon as I can.
I mean Nintendo has been very successful with that model. The only time recently I think they didn't mean to do it was with the GameCube adapters, just because it was a niche item that they didn't think would sell as well as it did. But this Amiibo thing Nintendo sees as a savior since the Wii U bombed, so they're trying to recreate that craze.
That sucks anautobot, we've got a lotta star fox over in our local walmart. I have no intentions of using them for games but their quality makes for a really nice collection piece (our star fox is wonderfully detailed) and its a far better thing to pay 12.99 for a vg collection piece then to pay $75+ I fully intend to pre-order mega man for myself as a bday present cuz I know he'll go fast. I'm also gonna snag a star fox for myself, link, one pit to keep as is, another pit to customize into dark pit and a couple of yoshis to customize. I'm crossing my fingers for duck hunt dog and palutena
Okay, so this Amiibo shit is madness. I woke up early today to go to Target to try and get a Rosalina and Toon Link. Drove by my local one and saw a line of 15 to 20 people. I said nuts to that and went to a different Target. Still about 20 people in line so I waited there. Doors open and people run to electronics. Me and the guys in line behind me just walk like humans do. So waiting in line at the electronics section and it becomes obvious that there are not enough Rosalinas to go around. I say fuck it and leave, go to another Target in the ghetto. Get there and the last Rosalina has just walked out the door. Then since it was on the way back home, I go to that first Target that I drove by. It turned out that the Target I first drove by had totally ample stock of Rosalina for the 100+ people who showed up before the store opened. I managed to snag one, but it seems like they were almost gone. Yay me! So 3 Targets and a few hours later I finally get my hands on a Rosalina, which is nice. But no Toon Link. But lol at the scalper who I got to see get told by employees to basically go fuck off at two separate Targets this morning. It was worth waking up early just for that!
